Psalm 1

 

1 Blessed is the man who has not walked in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stood in the way of sinners, nor sat in the seat of the pestilent;

 

2 but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he will meditate day and night.

 

3 And he shall be like the tree planted by the streams of waters, which will yield its fruit in its season, and its leaf shall not fall away; and all things, whatsoever he does, shall prosper.

 

4 Not so the ungodly, not so; but they are like the chaff which the wind drives away from the face of the earth.

 

5 Therefore the ungodly shall not rise in judgment, nor sinners in the counsel of the righteous;

 

6 for the Lord knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the ungodly shall perish.

 

Psalm 2

 

1 Why did the nations rage, and the peoples devise vain things?

 

2 The kings of the earth stood up, and the rulers were gathered together against the Lord and against his anointed. Interlude on strings.

 

3 "Let us break their bonds asunder, and let us cast off from us their yoke."

 

4 He who dwells in the heavens will laugh them to scorn, and the Lord will mock them.

 

5 Then he will speak to them in his anger, and in his wrath he will trouble them:

 

6 "But I was established as king by him upon Zion, his holy mountain,

 

7 declaring the ordinance of the Lord: The Lord said to me, 'You are my son; today I have begotten you.

 

8 Ask of me, and I will give you nations as your inheritance, and the ends of the earth as your possession.

 

9 You shall shepherd them with an iron rod; like a potter's vessel you shall shatter them.'"

 

10 And now, O kings, understand; be instructed, all you who judge the earth.

 

11 Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice in him with trembling.

 

12 Lay hold of instruction, lest the Lord be angry and you perish from the righteous way. Whenever his wrath is swiftly kindled, blessed are all who trust in him.

 

Psalm 3

 

1 A Psalm of David, when he fled from the face of Absalom his son.

 

2 Lord, why have those who afflict me been multiplied? Many rise up against me;

 

3 many say to my soul, "There is no salvation for him in his God." Selah.

 

4 But you, Lord, are my helper, my glory, and the one who lifts up my head.

 

5 With my voice I cried to the Lord, and he heard me from his holy mountain. Selah.

 

6 I lay down and slept; I awoke, for the Lord will help me.

 

7 I will not fear tens of thousands of people who set upon me all around.

 

8 Arise, Lord; save me, my God, for you have struck all who are my enemies without cause; you have shattered the teeth of sinners.

 

9 Salvation belongs to the Lord, and your blessing is upon your people.

 

Psalm 4

 

1 For the end, among the psalms; an ode of David.

 

2 When I called upon him, the God of my righteousness heard me; in affliction you gave me room; have compassion on me and hear my prayer.

 

3 Sons of men, how long will you be heavy of heart? Why do you love vanity and seek falsehood? Pause.

 

4 And know that the Lord has made his holy one marvelous; the Lord will hear me when I cry to him.

 

5 Be angry and do not sin; speak in your hearts, and be pricked with compunction upon your beds. Pause.

 

6 Sacrifice a sacrifice of righteousness, and hope in the Lord.

 

7 Many say, Who will show us good things? The light of your face has been signed upon us, O Lord.

 

8 You have given gladness to my heart; from the season of their grain and wine and oil they have been multiplied.

 

9 In peace I will lie down and sleep at once, for you, O Lord, alone have made me dwell in hope. 

  

Psalm 5

 

1 To the end, concerning her who inherits; a psalm of David.

 

2 Give ear to my words, O Lord, understand my cry;

 

3 attend to the voice of my supplication, my King and my God, for to you I will pray, O Lord.

 

4 In the morning you will hear my voice; in the morning I will present myself before you and will watch.

 

5 For you are not a God who wills lawlessness, nor shall an evildoer dwell with you;

 

6 the lawless shall not remain before your eyes; you have hated all those who work lawlessness.

 

7 You will destroy all who speak falsehood; a man of blood and deceit the Lord abhors.

 

8 But I, in the abundance of your mercy, will enter into your house; I will worship toward your holy temple in fear of you.

 

9 O Lord, lead me in your righteousness because of my enemies; make straight your way before me.

 

10 For there is no truth in their mouth; their heart is vain; their throat is an open grave; with their tongues they have dealt deceitfully.

 

11 Judge them, O God; let them fall from their own counsels; according to the multitude of their impieties cast them out, for they have embittered you, O Lord.

 

12 And let all who hope in you be glad; forever they shall rejoice, and you will dwell among them, and all who love your name shall glory in you.

 

13 For you will bless the righteous; O Lord, you have crowned us as with a shield of favor. 

  

Psalm 6

 

1 To the end, with hymns, concerning the eighth; a psalm of David.

 

2 O Lord, do not rebuke me in your anger, nor chastise me in your wrath.

 

3 Have mercy on me, O Lord, for I am weak; heal me, O Lord, for my bones are troubled,

 

4 and my soul is greatly troubled; and you, O Lord, how long?

 

5 Turn, O Lord, deliver my soul; save me for the sake of your mercy.

 

6 For in death there is no one who remembers you; and in Hades who will give you thanks?

 

7 I am worn out with my groaning; every night I will wash my bed; with my tears I will drench my couch.

 

8 My eye is troubled from anger; I have grown old among all my enemies.

 

9 Depart from me, all you who work lawlessness, for the Lord has heard the voice of my weeping;

 

10 the Lord has heard my supplication; the Lord has accepted my prayer.

 

11 May all my enemies be ashamed and greatly troubled; may they be turned back and greatly put to shame very swiftly.

  

Psalm 7

 

1 A psalm of David, which he sang to the Lord concerning the words of Cush, son of Iemeni.

 

2 O Lord my God, in you I have hoped; save me from all who pursue me, and deliver me,

 

3 lest he seize my soul like a lion, while there is none to redeem or to save.

 

4 O Lord my God, if I have done this, if there is injustice in my hands,

 

5 if I have repaid with evil those who repaid me, may I then fall away empty from my enemies;

 

6 then let the enemy pursue my soul and overtake it, and trample my life into the earth, and lay my glory down in the dust. Pause.

 

7 Arise, O Lord, in your wrath; be exalted at the borders of my enemies; awake, O Lord my God, according to the decree which you commanded,

 

8 and an assembly of peoples shall surround you; and over it return on high.

 

9 The Lord will judge the peoples; judge me, O Lord, according to my righteousness and according to the innocence that is in me.

 

10 Let the wickedness of sinners now be brought to an end, and you will direct the righteous; God is the one who tests hearts and inward parts.

 

11 My help is just, from God who saves the upright in heart.

 

12 God is a righteous judge, and strong, and patient, not bringing wrath every day.

 

13 If you do not turn back, he will polish his sword; he has bent his bow and made it ready,

 

14 and with it he has prepared instruments of death; he has fashioned his arrows for those who burn.

 

15 Behold, he travailed with injustice, conceived toil, and brought forth lawlessness;

 

16 he dug a pit and hollowed it out, and he shall fall into the hole which he made;

 

17 his toil shall return upon his own head, and upon his crown shall his injustice come down.

 

18 I will give thanks to the Lord according to his righteousness, and I will sing praise to the name of the Lord Most High.

 

Psalm 8

 

1 For the end, concerning the winepresses; a psalm of David.

 

2 O Lord, our Lord, how wonderful is your name in all the earth, for your magnificence has been lifted up above the heavens.

 

3 Out of the mouths of infants and nursing babes you have prepared praise, because of your enemies, to destroy the enemy and the avenger.

 

4 For I shall behold the heavens, the works of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have established.

 

5 What is man, that you are mindful of him, or the son of man, that you visit him?

 

6 You made him a little lower than the angels; you crowned him with glory and honor,

 

7 and set him over the works of your hands; you put all things under his feet,

 

8 sheep and all oxen, and moreover the beasts of the field,

 

9 the birds of the sky and the fish of the sea, the things that pass through the paths of the seas.

 

10 O Lord, our Lord, how wonderful is your name in all the earth. 

  

Psalm 9

 

1 To the end, concerning the hidden things of the son; a psalm of David.

 

2 I will give thanks to you, O Lord, with my whole heart; I will recount all your wonders.

 

3 I will be glad and rejoice in you; I will sing to your name, O Most High.

 

4 When my enemy is turned back, they shall grow weak and perish before your face,

 

5 for you have maintained my judgment and my cause; you sat on the throne, you who judge righteousness.

 

6 You rebuked the nations, and the ungodly one perished; you blotted out their name forever and for ever and ever.

 

7 The swords of the enemy have failed utterly, and you have destroyed cities; their memory has perished with a resounding noise.

 

8 But the Lord abides forever; he has prepared his throne for judgment,

 

9 and he himself will judge the world in righteousness; he will judge the peoples in uprightness.

 

10 And the Lord has become a refuge for the poor, a helper in due times of affliction.

 

11 Let those who know your name hope in you, for you have not forsaken those who seek you, O Lord.

 

12 Sing to the Lord who dwells in Sion; declare his ways among the nations,

 

13 for he who requires their blood has remembered; he has not forgotten the cry of the poor.

 

14 Have mercy on me, O Lord; see my humiliation at the hands of my enemies, you who lift me up from the gates of death,

 

15 that I may proclaim all your praises in the gates of the daughter of Sion; I will rejoice in your salvation.

 

16 The nations have been caught in the destruction they wrought; in this very snare which they hid, their foot has been taken.

 

17 The Lord is known by executing judgments; the sinner has been taken in the works of his own hands. An ode of interlude.

 

18 Let the sinners be turned back to Hades, all the nations that forget God;

 

19 for the poor shall not be forgotten to the end; the endurance of the needy shall not perish forever.

 

20 Arise, O Lord; let not man prevail; let the nations be judged before you.

 

21 Appoint, O Lord, a lawgiver over them; let the nations know that they are men. Interlude.

 

22 Why, O Lord, do you stand far off? Why do you overlook us in due times of affliction?

 

23 While the ungodly one acts arrogantly, the poor man is set on fire; they are caught in the schemes which they devise.

 

24 For the sinner is praised in the desires of his soul, and the wrongdoer is blessed.

 

25 The sinner has provoked the Lord: "In the greatness of his wrath he will not seek me out." God is not before him.

 

26 His ways are defiled at all times; your judgments are removed from before his face; he shall lord it over all his enemies.

 

27 For he said in his heart, "I shall not be shaken; from generation to generation I shall be without evil."

 

28 His mouth is full of cursing and bitterness and deceit; under his tongue are toil and trouble.

 

29 He sits in ambush with the rich in secret places to kill the innocent; his eyes are fixed on the poor.

 

30 He lies in wait in a secret place like a lion in his den; he lies in wait to seize the poor, to seize the poor by dragging him away.

 

31 In his snare he will humble him; he will crouch and fall in his lording it over the poor.

 

32 For he said in his heart, "God has forgotten; he has turned away his face so as never to see."

 

33 Arise, O Lord God; let your hand be lifted up; do not forget the poor.

 

34 Why has the ungodly one provoked God? For he said in his heart, "He will not seek it out."

 

35 You do see, for you observe toil and wrath, so as to deliver them into your hands; to you, then, the poor man has been left; you were a helper to the orphan.

 

36 Break the arm of the sinner and the wicked; his sin shall be sought and shall not be found because of it.

 

37 The Lord shall reign forever and for ever and ever; you nations shall perish from his land.

 

38 The Lord has heard the desire of the poor; your ear has attended to the preparation of their heart,

 

39 to render judgment for the orphan and the humble, that man may no more continue to boast upon the earth.

  

Psalm 10

 

1 For the end; a psalm of David. In the Lord I have put my trust; how will you say to my soul, "Flee to the mountains like a sparrow"?

 

2 For behold, the sinners have bent the bow, they have prepared arrows in the quiver, to shoot in the dark of the moon those who are upright in heart.

 

3 For what you have established, they have torn down; but the righteous one, what has he done?

 

4 The Lord is in his holy temple; the Lord—his throne is in heaven. His eyes look upon the poor; his eyelids examine the sons of men.

 

5 The Lord examines the righteous and the ungodly, but he who loves injustice hates his own soul.

 

6 He will rain down snares upon sinners; fire and brimstone and a storm of wind shall be the portion of their cup.

 

7 For the Lord is righteous and has loved righteous deeds; his face has beheld uprightness. 

 

Psalm 11

 

1 For the end, concerning the eighth; a psalm of David.

 

2 Save me, O Lord, for the godly man has failed, for truths have grown scarce among the sons of men.

 

3 Everyone has spoken vain things to his neighbor; with deceitful lips, with a double heart have they spoken.

 

4 May the Lord destroy all deceitful lips and the boastful tongue,

 

5 those who have said, "We will magnify our tongue; our lips are our own—who is lord over us?"

 

6 "Because of the misery of the poor and the groaning of the needy, now I will arise," says the Lord; "I will place him in safety; I will speak openly in him."

 

7 The words of the Lord are pure words, silver tried in the fire, tested in the earth, purified seven times.

 

8 You, O Lord, will guard us and preserve us from this generation and forever.

 

9 The ungodly walk about in a circle; according to your loftiness you have cared greatly for the sons of men. 

 

Psalm 12

 

1 To the end; a psalm of David.

 

2 How long, O Lord, will you forget me forever? How long will you turn your face away from me?

 

3 How long shall I take counsel in my soul, with sorrows in my heart by day? How long will my enemy be exalted over me?

 

4 Look upon me, hear me, O Lord my God; enlighten my eyes, lest I sleep unto death,

 

5 lest my enemy say, "I have prevailed against him." Those who afflict me will rejoice if I am shaken.

 

6 But I have hoped in your mercy; my heart shall rejoice in your salvation. I will sing to the Lord who has dealt bountifully with me, and I will sing praise to the name of the Lord Most High. 

 

Psalm 13

 

1 To the end; a psalm of David. The fool said in his heart, "There is no God." They have become corrupt and abominable in their practices; there is none that does good, no, not even one.

 

2 The Lord looked down from heaven upon the sons of men, to see if there was any that understood or sought after God.

 

3 They have all turned aside, together they have become worthless; there is none that does good, no, not even one. Their throat is an open grave; with their tongues they have practiced deceit; the venom of asps is under their lips, whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness; their feet are swift to shed blood; destruction and misery are in their ways, and the way of peace they have not known; there is no fear of God before their eyes.

 

4 Shall not all the workers of iniquity know—those who devour my people as one eats bread? They have not called upon the Lord.

 

5 There they trembled with fear where there was no fear, for God is in the righteous generation.

 

6 You have put to shame the counsel of the poor man, because the Lord is his hope.

 

7 Who shall give out of Zion the salvation of Israel? When the Lord brings back the captivity of his people, let Jacob rejoice and let Israel be glad. 

  

Psalm 14

 

1 A Psalm of David. Lord, who shall sojourn in your tabernacle, and who shall dwell on your holy mountain?

 

2 He who walks blameless and works righteousness, who speaks truth in his heart,

 

3 who has not practiced deceit with his tongue, nor done evil to his neighbor, nor taken up a reproach against those nearest to him;

 

4 in whose sight the evildoer is despised, but he honors those who fear the Lord; who swears to his neighbor and does not break his word;

 

5 who has not given his money at interest, and has not taken bribes against the innocent. He who does these things shall never be shaken. 

 

Psalm 15

 

1 An inscription on a pillar. Of David. Preserve me, O Lord, for in you I have hoped.

 

2 I said to the Lord, "You are my Lord, for you have no need of my goods."

 

3 For the holy ones who are in his land, he has made wonderful all his purposes among them.

 

4 Their weaknesses were multiplied; afterward they hastened. I will not assemble their assemblies of blood, nor will I remember their names with my lips.

 

5 The Lord is the portion of my inheritance and of my cup; you are the one who restores my inheritance to me.

 

6 Lines have fallen to me in the best places; indeed, my inheritance is most excellent to me.

 

7 I will bless the Lord who has given me understanding; moreover, even until night my kidneys instructed me.

 

8 I kept the Lord always before me, because he is at my right hand, that I may not be shaken.

 

9 Therefore my heart was glad, and my tongue rejoiced; moreover, my flesh also will dwell in hope,

 

10 because you will not abandon my soul to Hades, nor will you allow your holy one to see corruption.

 

11 You have made known to me the ways of life; you will fill me with gladness with your face; delights are in your right hand forever. 

  

Psalm 16

 

1 A prayer of David. Hear, O Lord, my righteousness; attend to my supplication; give ear to my prayer, which is not from deceitful lips.

 

2 Let my judgment come forth from your presence; let my eyes behold uprightness.

 

3 You have tested my heart; you have visited me by night; you have tried me with fire, and no injustice was found in me.

 

4 That my mouth might not speak of the works of men, for the sake of the words of your lips I have kept to hard ways.

 

5 Establish my steps in your paths, that my footsteps may not be shaken.

 

6 I have cried out, for you heard me, O God; incline your ear to me and hear my words.

 

7 Show the wonders of your mercies, you who save those who hope in you from those who stand against your right hand.

 

8 Guard me as the apple of an eye; in the shelter of your wings you will shelter me

 

9 from the face of the ungodly who have afflicted me. My enemies have surrounded my soul;

 

10 they have enclosed themselves in their own fat; their mouth has spoken arrogance.

 

11 Casting me out, they have now encircled me; they have set their eyes to bend down to the earth.

 

12 They lay in wait for me like a lion ready for prey, and like a lion's cub dwelling in hidden places.

 

13 Arise, O Lord, forestall them and trip them up; deliver my soul from the ungodly, your sword from the enemies of your hand.

 

14 O Lord, divide them from the few of the earth in their life; and their belly was filled with your hidden things; they were satisfied with sons and left the remainder to their infants.

 

15 But as for me, in righteousness I shall appear before your face; I shall be satisfied when your glory is seen. 

 

Psalm 17

 

1 For the end; for the servant of the Lord, David, who spoke to the Lord the words of this song on the day when the Lord delivered him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul,

 

2 and he said: I will love you, O Lord, my strength.

 

3 The Lord is my firm foundation and my refuge and my deliverer; my God is my helper, and I will hope in him, my defender and the horn of my salvation, my protector.

 

4 Praising, I will call upon the Lord, and I shall be saved from my enemies.

 

5 The pangs of death encompassed me, and torrents of lawlessness troubled me;

 

6 the pangs of Hades encircled me; the snares of death overtook me.

 

7 And in my affliction I called upon the Lord, and I cried out to my God; he heard my voice from his holy temple, and my cry before him shall come into his ears.

 

8 And the earth shook and trembled, and the foundations of the mountains were troubled and shaken, because God was angry with them.

 

9 Smoke went up in his wrath, and fire from his face blazed forth; coals were kindled from him.

 

10 And he bowed the heaven and came down, and thick darkness was under his feet.

 

11 And he mounted upon cherubim and flew; he flew upon the wings of the winds.

 

12 And he made darkness his hiding place; round about him was his tent, dark water in the clouds of the air.

 

13 At the brightness before him the clouds passed by—hail and coals of fire.

 

14 And the Lord thundered from heaven, and the Most High uttered his voice;

 

15 and he sent forth arrows and scattered them, and he multiplied lightnings and confounded them.

 

16 And the springs of the waters appeared, and the foundations of the world were laid bare at your rebuke, O Lord, at the blast of the breath of your wrath.

 

17 He sent from on high and took me; he drew me out of many waters.

 

18 He will deliver me from my mighty enemies and from those who hate me, for they were too strong for me.

 

19 They overtook me in the day of my affliction, and the Lord became my support;

 

20 and he brought me out into a broad place; he will deliver me, because he delighted in me. He will deliver me from my mighty enemies and from those who hate me.

 

21 And the Lord will reward me according to my righteousness, and according to the cleanness of my hands he will reward me,

 

22 for I have kept the ways of the Lord and have not acted impiously against my God,

 

23 for all his judgments are before me, and his statutes I have not put away from me.

 

24 And I shall be blameless with him, and I shall keep myself from my lawlessness.

 

25 And the Lord will reward me according to my righteousness, and according to the cleanness of my hands before his eyes.

 

26 With the holy you will be holy, and with the innocent man you will be innocent,

 

27 and with the chosen you will be chosen, and with the crooked you will deal crookedly.

 

28 For you will save a humble people, and the eyes of the proud you will humble.

 

29 For you will light my lamp, O Lord; my God, you will lighten my darkness.

 

30 For by you I shall be delivered from a band of marauders, and by my God I shall leap over a wall.

 

31 As for my God, his way is blameless; the words of the Lord are tried by fire; he is the defender of all who hope in him.

 

32 For who is God except the Lord? And who is God except our God?

 

33 It is God who girds me with strength and made my way blameless,

 

34 who makes my feet like a deer's and sets me upon the high places,

 

35 who trains my hands for war; and you made my arms a bow of bronze.

 

36 And you gave me the shield of my salvation, and your right hand upheld me, and your discipline set me upright to the end, and your discipline itself will teach me.

 

37 You made my steps broad beneath me, and my footsteps did not weaken.

 

38 I will pursue my enemies and overtake them, and I will not turn back until they fail;

 

39 I will crush them, and they shall by no means be able to stand; they shall fall under my feet.

 

40 And you girded me with strength for war; you bound under me all who rose up against me,

 

41 and you gave me the back of my enemies, and those who hated me you utterly destroyed.

 

42 They cried out, and there was no one to save—to the Lord, and he did not listen to them.

 

43 And I will grind them fine like dust before the face of the wind; like the mire of the streets I will pound them.

 

44 You will deliver me from the disputes of the people; you will set me at the head of nations; a people whom I knew not served me;

 

45 at the hearing of the ear they obeyed me; foreign sons lied to me;

 

46 foreign sons grew old and limped away from their paths.

 

47 The Lord lives, and blessed be my God, and let the God of my salvation be exalted

 

48 the God who gives me vengeance and subdued peoples under me,

 

49 my deliverer from my wrathful enemies; you will lift me up above those who rise against me; from the unjust man you will deliver me.

 

50 Therefore I will give thanks to you among the nations, O Lord, and I will sing psalms to your name,

 

51 magnifying the salvations of his king and showing mercy to his anointed, to David and to his seed forever. 

 

Psalm 18

 

1 For the end; a psalm of David.

 

2 The heavens declare the glory of God, and the firmament proclaims the work of his hands.

 

3 Day to day pours forth speech, and night to night proclaims knowledge.

 

4 There are no speeches or words in which their voices are not heard.

 

5 Their sound has gone out into all the earth, and their words to the ends of the inhabited world. In the sun he has set his tabernacle;

 

6 and he, like a bridegroom coming forth from his bridal chamber, will rejoice like a giant to run his course.

 

7 His going forth is from the edge of heaven, and his circuit to the edge of heaven, and there is no one who shall be hidden from his heat.

 

8 The law of the Lord is blameless, converting souls; the testimony of the Lord is faithful, making infants wise;

 

9 the ordinances of the Lord are right, gladdening the heart; the commandment of the Lord is radiant, enlightening the eyes;

 

10 the fear of the Lord is pure, enduring forever and ever; the judgments of the Lord are true, justified altogether,

 

11 more to be desired than gold and much precious stone, and sweeter than honey and the honeycomb.

 

12 For indeed your servant keeps them; in keeping them there is great reward.

 

13 Who shall understand transgressions? Cleanse me from my hidden faults.

 

14 And spare your servant from strange ones; if they do not gain dominion over me, then I shall be blameless and cleansed from great sin.

 

15 And the sayings of my mouth and the meditation of my heart shall be pleasing before you continually, O Lord, my helper and my redeemer. 

 

Psalm 19

 

1 For the end; a psalm of David.

 

2 May the Lord hear you in the day of trouble; may the name of the God of Jacob defend you.

 

3 May he send you help from the holy place, and from Zion may he support you.

 

4 May he remember every sacrifice of yours, and may your burnt offering be made fat. Selah.

 

5 May he grant you according to your heart, and fulfill all your counsel.

 

6 We will rejoice in your salvation, and in the name of our God we will be magnified. May the Lord fulfill all your requests.

 

7 Now I know that the Lord has saved his anointed; he will hear him from his holy heaven; in mighty deeds is the salvation of his right hand.

 

8 Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we will be magnified in the name of the Lord our God.

 

9 They were entangled and fell, but we have risen and been set upright.

 

10 O Lord, save your king, and hear us on whatever day we call upon you. 

  

Psalm 20

 

1 For the end: a psalm of David.

 

2 O Lord, in your strength the king shall rejoice, and in your salvation he shall exult exceedingly.

 

3 You have given him the desire of his soul, and the wish of his lips you have not denied him. Selah.

 

4 For you went before him with blessings of goodness; you set upon his head a crown of precious stone.

 

5 He asked life of you, and you gave it to him, length of days forever and ever.

 

6 Great is his glory in your salvation; glory and majesty you will lay upon him.

13 For you will make them turn their back; among your remnants you will make ready their face.

2 O God, my God, attend to me; why have you forsaken me? Far from my salvation are the words of my transgressions.

 

3 My God, I shall cry by day, and you will not hear, and by night, and it is not for folly in me.

 

4 But you dwell among the holy ones, the praise of Israel.

 

5 In you our fathers hoped; they hoped, and you delivered them.

 

6 To you they cried and were saved; in you they hoped and were not put to shame.

 

7 But I am a worm and not a man, a reproach of man and despised by the people.

 

8 All who saw me mocked me; they spoke with their lips, they shook the head:

 

9 "He hoped in the Lord; let him deliver him; let him save him, because he desires him."

 

10 For you are he who drew me out of the womb, my hope from my mother's breasts.

 

11 Upon you I was cast from the womb; from my mother's belly you are my God.

 

12 Do not depart from me, for affliction is near, for there is no one to help.

 

13 Many calves encircled me; fat bulls surrounded me.

17 For many dogs encircled me; an assembly of evildoers surrounded me; they pierced my hands and feet.

 

18 I counted all my bones, but they observed and looked upon me.

 

19 They divided my garments among themselves, and for my clothing they cast lots.

 

20 But you, O Lord, do not keep your help far from me; attend to my aid.

 

21 Deliver my soul from the sword, and my only one from the hand of the dog.

 

22 Save me from the mouth of the lion, and my lowliness from the horns of unicorns.

 

23 I will declare your name to my brothers; in the midst of the assembly I will hymn you:

 

24 You who fear the Lord, praise him; all the seed of Jacob, glorify him; let all the seed of Israel fear him,

 

25 for he did not despise nor scorn the supplication of the poor, nor did he turn his face away from me, and when I cried to him he heard me.

 

26 From you comes my praise in a great assembly; I will pay my vows before those who fear him.

 

27 The needy shall eat and be filled, and those who seek him shall praise the Lord; their hearts shall live forever and ever.

 

28 All the ends of the earth shall remember and turn to the Lord, and all the families of the nations shall worship before you,

 

29 for the kingdom is the Lord's, and he is master over the nations.

 

30 All the fat ones of the earth ate and worshiped; before him shall fall down all who go down into the earth. And my soul lives for him,

 

31 and my seed shall serve him; the coming generation shall be declared to the Lord,

 

32 and they shall declare his righteousness to a people yet to be born, that the Lord has done it. 

 

Psalm 22

 

1 A Psalm of David. The Lord shepherds me, and I shall lack nothing.

 

2 In a place of green pasture, there he has made me dwell; beside the water of rest he has nourished me,

 

3 he has restored my soul. He has guided me on paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

 

4 For even if I walk in the midst of the shadow of death, I shall fear no evils, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they have comforted me.

 

5 You have prepared a table before me in the presence of those who afflict me; you have anointed my head with oil, and your cup makes me drunk like the strongest wine.

 

6 And your mercy shall pursue me all the days of my life, and my dwelling shall be in the house of the Lord for length of days. 

 

Psalm 23

 

1 A Psalm of David; for the first day of the week. The earth is the Lord's, and the fullness thereof; the world, and all who dwell therein.

 

2 He founded it upon the seas, and prepared it upon the rivers.

 

3 Who shall ascend the mountain of the Lord, and who shall stand in his holy place?

 

4 He who is innocent in hands and pure in heart, who has not taken up his soul unto vanity, nor sworn deceitfully to his neighbor.

 

5 He shall receive blessing from the Lord, and mercy from God his savior.

 

6 This is the generation of those who seek him, who seek the face of the God of Jacob. Selah.

 

7 Lift up your gates, you rulers, and be lifted up, you everlasting gates, and the King of glory shall come in.

 

8 Who is this King of glory? The Lord strong and mighty, the Lord mighty in battle.

 

9 Lift up your gates, you rulers, and be lifted up, you everlasting gates, and the King of glory shall come in.

 

10 Who is this King of glory? The Lord of hosts, he is the King of glory. 

 

Psalm 24

 

1 A Psalm of David. To you, O Lord, I have lifted up my soul, my God.

 

2 In you I have trusted; let me not be put to shame, nor let my enemies laugh at me.

 

3 For indeed all who wait upon you shall not be put to shame; let all who act lawlessly in vain be put to shame.

 

4 Make known to me your ways, O Lord, and teach me your paths.

 

5 Guide me to your truth and teach me, for you are God my savior, and for you I have waited all the day.

 

6 Remember your compassions, O Lord, and your mercies, for they are from everlasting.

 

7 Do not remember the sins of my youth and my ignorance; according to your mercy remember me, for the sake of your goodness, O Lord.

 

8 Good and upright is the Lord; therefore he will instruct sinners in the way.

 

9 He will guide the meek in judgment; he will teach the meek his ways.

14 The Lord is the strength of those who fear him, and the name of the Lord belongs to those who fear him, and his covenant, to show it to them.

 

15 My eyes are continually toward the Lord, for he will pluck my feet out of the snare.

 

16 Look upon me and have mercy on me, for I am alone and poor.

 

17 The afflictions of my heart have been enlarged; bring me out of my distresses.

 

18 See my humiliation and my toil, and forgive all my sins.

 

19 See my enemies, for they have multiplied, and they have hated me with an unjust hatred.

 

20 Guard my soul and deliver me; let me not be put to shame, for I have hoped in you.

 

21 The innocent and the upright joined themselves to me, because I waited for you, O Lord.

Psalm 25

 

1 Of David. Judge me, O Lord, for I have walked in my innocence, and trusting in the Lord I shall not be shaken.

 

2 Prove me, O Lord, and try me; test my kidneys and my heart with fire.

 

3 For your mercy is before my eyes, and I have been well pleasing in your truth.

 

4 I have not sat with a council of vanity, and with lawbreakers I will not enter in.

 

5 I have hated the assembly of evildoers, and with the ungodly I will not sit.

 

6 I will wash my hands among the innocent and go around your altar, O Lord,

 

7 to hear the voice of praise and to recount all your wonders.

 

8 O Lord, I have loved the beauty of your house and the place of the dwelling of your glory.

 

9 Do not destroy my soul together with the ungodly, nor my life with men of blood,

 

10 in whose hands are lawless deeds; their right hand is filled with bribes.

 

11 But as for me, I have walked in my innocence; redeem me and have mercy on me.

Psalm 26

 

1 Of David; before he was anointed. The Lord is my light and my savior; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the defender of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

 

2 When evildoers drew near against me to devour my flesh, my oppressors and my enemies, they themselves grew weak and fell.

 

3 If an army should array itself against me, my heart shall not fear; if war should rise up against me, in this I hope.

 

4 One thing I have asked from the Lord; this I will seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, that I may behold the delight of the Lord and visit his temple.

 

5 For he hid me in a tent in the day of my troubles; he sheltered me in the secret place of his tent; he lifted me high upon a rock.

 

6 And now, behold, he has lifted up my head above my enemies; I went around and sacrificed in his tent a sacrifice of shouting; I will sing and make music to the Lord.

 

7 Hear, O Lord, my voice with which I cried; have mercy on me and hear me.

 

8 To you my heart said, "My face has sought"; your face, O Lord, I will seek.

 

9 Do not turn your face away from me; do not turn aside in anger from your servant. Be my helper; do not cast me off and do not forsake me, O God my savior.

 

10 For my father and my mother forsook me, but the Lord took me up.

 

11 Give me a law, O Lord, in your way, and guide me in a straight path because of my enemies.

 

12 Do not hand me over to the souls of those who oppress me, for unjust witnesses have risen up against me, and injustice has lied to itself.

 

13 I believe that I shall see the good things of the Lord in the land of the living.

 

14 Wait for the Lord; be brave, and let your heart be strengthened, and wait for the Lord. 

 

Psalm 27

 

1 A Psalm of David. To you, O Lord, I have cried, my God; do not be silent toward me, lest you be silent toward me and I become like those who go down into the pit.

 

2 Hear the voice of my supplication when I pray to you, when I lift up my hands toward your holy temple.

 

3 Do not drag away my soul with sinners, and do not destroy me together with those who work iniquity, who speak peace with their neighbors, but evils are in their hearts.

 

4 Give to them according to their works and according to the wickedness of their practices; according to the works of their hands give to them; render their recompense to them.

 

5 Because they did not understand the works of the Lord and the works of his hands, you will pull them down and will not build them up.

 

6 Blessed be the Lord, for he has heard the voice of my supplication.

 

7 The Lord is my helper and my protector; in him my heart hoped, and I was helped, and my flesh revived; and of my own will I shall give thanks to him.

 

8 The Lord is the strength of his people, and he is the protector of the salvation of his anointed.

 

9 Save your people and bless your inheritance, and shepherd them and lift them up forever.

  

Psalm 28

 

1 A Psalm of David; at the going forth of the tabernacle. Bring to the Lord, O sons of God, bring to the Lord sons of rams, bring to the Lord glory and honor;

 

2 bring to the Lord glory for his name; worship the Lord in his holy court.

 

3 The voice of the Lord is upon the waters; the God of glory has thundered; the Lord is upon many waters.

 

4 The voice of the Lord is in strength; the voice of the Lord is in majesty.

 

5 The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars; and the Lord shall break the cedars of Lebanon,

 

6 and shall beat them small, even Lebanon itself, like a calf; and the beloved one like a son of unicorns.

 

7 The voice of the Lord cuts through a flame of fire;

 

8 the voice of the Lord shakes the wilderness; the Lord shall shake the wilderness of Kades.

 

9 The voice of the Lord brings the deer to birth, and will strip bare the forests; and in his temple every one speaks of glory.

 

10 The Lord will dwell upon the flood; and the Lord shall sit as king forever.

 

11 The Lord will give strength to his people; the Lord will bless his people with peace. 

 

Psalm 29

 

1 For the end; a psalm of a song of the dedication of the house; for David.

 

2 I will exalt you, O Lord, for you have upheld me and have not made my enemies rejoice over me.

 

3 O Lord my God, I cried out to you, and you healed me.

 

4 O Lord, you brought up my soul from Hades; you saved me from among those going down into the pit.

 

5 Sing praises to the Lord, you his holy ones, and give thanks at the remembrance of his holiness.

 

6 For there is wrath in his anger, and life in his will; in the evening weeping will lodge, and in the morning rejoicing.

 

7 But I said in my prosperity, "I shall never be shaken."

 

8 O Lord, by your will you supplied strength to my beauty; but you turned away your face, and I became troubled.

 

9 To you, O Lord, I will cry, and to my God I will make supplication:

 

10 "What profit is there in my blood, in my going down to corruption? Will the dust give thanks to you, or declare your truth?"

 

11 The Lord heard and had mercy on me; the Lord became my helper.

 

12 You have turned my mourning into dancing for me; you have torn off my sackcloth and girded me with gladness,

Psalm 30

 

1 For the end; a psalm of David; of ecstasy.

 

2 In you, O Lord, I have hoped; may I never be put to shame forever; in your righteousness deliver me and rescue me.

 

3 Incline your ear to me, make haste to rescue me; be to me a protecting God and a house of refuge to save me.

 

4 For you are my strength and my refuge, and for your name's sake you will guide me and sustain me;

 

5 you will bring me out of this snare which they have hidden for me, for you are my protector.

 

6 Into your hands I will commit my spirit; you have redeemed me, O Lord, God of truth.

 

7 You have hated those who cling to empty vanities; but I have hoped in the Lord.

 

8 I will rejoice and be glad in your mercy, for you have looked upon my humiliation; you have saved my soul from distresses,

 

9 and you have not shut me up into the hands of the enemy; you have set my feet in a broad place.

 

10 Have mercy on me, O Lord, for I am afflicted; my eye is troubled with anger, my soul and my belly.

13 I have been forgotten like a dead man out of mind; I have become like a lost vessel.

 

14 For I heard the blame of many dwelling around; when they gathered together against me, they plotted to take my life.

 

15 But I hoped in you, O Lord; I said, You are my God.

 

16 My times are in your hands; deliver me from the hand of my enemies and from those who pursue me.

 

17 Make your face shine upon your servant; save me in your mercy.

 

18 O Lord, let me not be put to shame, for I have called upon you; let the ungodly be ashamed and brought down to Hades.

 

19 Let the deceitful lips be made mute, which speak lawlessness against the righteous with pride and contempt.

 

20 How great is the abundance of your goodness, O Lord, which you have hidden for those who fear you, which you have wrought for those who hope in you before the sons of men.

 

21 You will hide them in the secret place of your presence from the disturbance of men; you will shelter them in a tent from the contradiction of tongues.

 

22 Blessed be the Lord, for he has made his mercy wonderful in a fortified city.

 

23 But I said in my ecstasy, I have been cast away then from the presence of your eyes. Therefore you heard the voice of my supplication when I cried out to you.

 

24 Love the Lord, all his holy ones, for the Lord seeks out truth and repays those who deal exceedingly in pride.

 

25 Be courageous, and let your heart be strengthened, all you who hope in the Lord. 

 

Psalm 31

 

1 Of David; of understanding. Blessed are those whose lawless deeds have been forgiven, and whose sins have been covered.

 

2 Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not reckon sin, and in whose mouth there is no deceit.

 

3 Because I kept silent, my bones grew old from my crying out all day long.

 

4 For day and night your hand was heavy upon me; I was turned to misery when a thorn was fixed in me. Interlude.

 

5 I made known my sin, and my lawlessness I did not cover; I said, "I will confess my lawlessness against myself to the Lord"; and you forgave the impiety of my sin. Interlude.

 

6 For this shall every holy one pray to you at a fitting time; surely in a flood of many waters they shall not come near him.

 

7 You are my refuge from the affliction that surrounds me; my joy, redeem me from those who have encircled me. Interlude.

 

8 I will give you understanding and instruct you in this way in which you shall go; I will fix my eyes upon you.

 

9 Do not be like a horse or a mule, which have no understanding, whose jaws you must restrain with bit and bridle, lest they come near you.

 

10 Many are the scourges of the sinner, but mercy shall surround the one who hopes in the Lord.

 

11 Be glad in the Lord and rejoice, you righteous, and boast, all you who are upright in heart. 

 

Psalm 32

 

1 Of David. Rejoice in the Lord, you righteous; praise befits the upright.

 

2 Give thanks to the Lord with the lyre; sing praises to him with the ten-stringed harp.

 

3 Sing to him a new song; play skillfully with a shout of joy.

 

4 For the word of the Lord is upright, and all his works are done in faithfulness.

 

5 He loves mercy and justice; the earth is full of the mercy of the Lord.

 

6 By the word of the Lord the heavens were made firm, and by the breath of his mouth all their host.

 

7 He gathers the waters of the sea as in a wineskin, laying up the deeps in storehouses.

 

8 Let all the earth fear the Lord, and let all who dwell in the world be shaken before him;

 

9 for he spoke, and they came to be; he commanded, and they were created.

 

10 The Lord scatters the counsels of the nations; he sets aside the reasonings of peoples and sets aside the counsels of rulers.

 

11 But the counsel of the Lord endures forever, the thoughts of his heart from generation to generation.

 

12 Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, the people whom he chose as an inheritance for himself.

 

13 From heaven the Lord looked down; he saw all the sons of men.

 

14 From his prepared dwelling place he looked upon all who inhabit the earth,

 

15 he who fashioned their hearts individually, who understands all their works.

 

16 A king is not saved by great power, and a giant will not be saved by the abundance of his strength.

 

17 A horse is a false hope for salvation, and by the abundance of its power it will not be saved.

 

18 Behold, the eyes of the Lord are upon those who fear him, those who hope in his mercy,

 

19 to deliver their souls from death and to sustain them in famine.

 

20 Our soul waits for the Lord, for he is our helper and protector;

 

21 for in him our heart will rejoice, and in his holy name we have hoped.

 

22 Let your mercy, O Lord, be upon us, even as we have hoped in you. 

  

Psalm 33

 

1 A Psalm of David, when he changed his countenance before Abimelech, and he dismissed him, and he departed.

 

2 I will bless the Lord at all times; his praise shall be continually in my mouth.

 

3 My soul shall be praised in the Lord; let the meek hear and rejoice.

 

4 Magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt his name together.

 

5 I sought the Lord, and he heard me, and delivered me from all my sojournings.

 

6 Come to him and be enlightened, and your faces shall by no means be put to shame.

 

7 This poor man cried, and the Lord heard him, and saved him from all his afflictions.

 

8 The angel of the Lord will encamp around those who fear him, and will deliver them.

 

9 Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the man who hopes in him.

 

10 Fear the Lord, you his holy ones, for there is no want to those who fear him.

 

11 The rich have become poor and hungry, but those who seek the Lord shall not lack any good thing. Pause.

 

12 Come, children, hear me; I will teach you the fear of the Lord.

 

13 Who is the man who desires life, loving to see good days?

 

14 Keep your tongue from evil, and your lips from speaking deceit.

 

15 Turn away from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it.

 

16 The eyes of the Lord are upon the righteous, and his ears are open to their supplication.

 

17 But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil, to destroy their memory from the earth.

 

18 The righteous cried, and the Lord heard them, and delivered them from all their afflictions.

 

19 The Lord is near to those who are broken in heart, and he will save the humble in spirit.

 

20 Many are the afflictions of the righteous, and he will deliver them from them all.

 

21 The Lord keeps all their bones; not one of them shall be broken.

 

22 The death of sinners is evil, and those who hate the righteous shall go astray.

 

23 The Lord will redeem the souls of his servants, and none of those who hope in him shall go astray. 

 

Psalm 34

 

1 Of David. Judge, O Lord, those who wrong me; make war on those who make war on me.

 

2 Take hold of weapon and shield and rise up to my help;

 

3 draw out the sword and close in against those who pursue me; say to my soul, "I am your salvation."

 

4 Let those who seek my soul be put to shame and confounded; let those who devise evils against me be turned back and disgraced.

 

5 Let them become like dust before the wind, with the angel of the Lord afflicting them;

 

6 let their way become darkness and slipperiness, with the angel of the Lord pursuing them;

 

7 for without cause they hid for me the destruction of their snare; in vain they reproached my soul.

 

8 Let a snare come upon them which they do not know, and let the trap which they hid seize them, and into that very snare let them fall.

 

9 But my soul shall rejoice in the Lord; it shall delight in his salvation.

 

10 All my bones shall say, "Lord, who is like you? Delivering the poor man from the hand of those stronger than he, and the poor and needy from those who plunder him."

 

11 Unjust witnesses rose up and asked me about things I did not know;

 

12 they repaid me evil for good, and bereavement to my soul.

 

13 But I, when they troubled me, put on sackcloth and humbled my soul with fasting, and my prayer shall return into my own bosom.

 

14 As with a neighbor, as with a brother of ours, so I pleased them; as one mourning and downcast, so I humbled myself.

 

15 Yet against me they rejoiced and gathered together; scourges were gathered against me, and I did not know it; they were torn apart and were not pierced with remorse.

 

16 They tempted me; they mocked me with mockery; they gnashed their teeth against me.

 

17 Lord, when will you look upon it? Restore my soul from their evildoing, my only one from the lions.

 

18 I will give thanks to you, Lord, in the great assembly; among a mighty people I will praise you.

 

19 Let not those who are my enemies unjustly rejoice over me, those who hate me without cause and wink with their eyes.

 

20 For to me they spoke words of peace, but in anger they devised deceits,

 

21 and they opened wide their mouth against me; they said, "Aha, aha, our eyes have seen it."

 

22 You have seen, Lord; do not keep silence, Lord; do not depart from me.

 

23 Awake, Lord, and attend to my judgment, my God and my Lord, to my cause.

 

24 Judge me according to your righteousness, Lord my God, and let them not rejoice over me.

 

25 Let them not say in their hearts, "Aha, aha, our soul's desire!" Nor let them say, "We have swallowed him up."

 

26 Let those who rejoice at my misfortunes be ashamed and confounded together; let those who speak great words against me be clothed with shame and confusion.

 

27 Let those who desire my righteousness rejoice and be glad, and let them say continually, "Let the Lord be magnified," those who desire the peace of his servant.

 

28 And my tongue shall meditate on your righteousness, on your praise all the day long. 

 

Psalm 35

 

1 For the end; for the servant of the Lord, for David.

 

2 The transgressor says within himself, in order to sin, there is no fear of God before his eyes;

 

3 for he has dealt deceitfully before him, so as to discover his iniquity and to hate it.

 

4 The words of his mouth are iniquity and deceit; he was unwilling to understand so as to do good.

 

5 He devised iniquity upon his bed; he set himself in every way that is not good, and he did not abhor evil.

 

6 O Lord, your mercy is in heaven, and your truth reaches to the clouds;

 

 

7 your righteousness is like the mountains of God, your judgments are a great deep; you will save men and beasts, O Lord.

 

8 How you have multiplied your mercy, O God! And the sons of men shall hope in the shelter of your wings.

 

9 They shall be made drunk with the fatness of your house, and you shall give them drink from the torrent of your delight;

 

10 for with you is the fountain of life; in your light we shall see light.

 

11 Extend your mercy to those who know you, and your righteousness to the upright in heart.

 

12 Let not the foot of pride come upon me, and let not the hand of sinners shake me.

 

13 There have the workers of iniquity fallen; they have been thrust out and shall not be able to stand. 

 

Psalm 36

 

1 Of David. Do not be provoked to jealousy by evildoers, nor envy those who work lawlessness;

 

2 for like grass they will quickly wither, and like green herbs they will quickly fall away.

 

3 Hope in the Lord and do goodness, and dwell in the land, and you shall be shepherded on its wealth.

 

4 Delight in the Lord, and he will give you the requests of your heart.

 

5 Reveal your way to the Lord, and hope in him, and he will act,

 

6 and he will bring forth your righteousness like light, and your judgment like the noonday.

 

7 Submit to the Lord and supplicate him; do not be provoked by the one who prospers in his way, by a man committing lawless deeds.

 

8 Cease from anger and forsake wrath; do not be provoked so as to do evil;

 

9 for the evildoers shall be utterly destroyed, but those who wait upon the Lord, they shall inherit the land.

 

10 And yet a little while, and the sinner shall be no more, and you will seek his place and not find it;

 

11 but the meek shall inherit the land and delight in abundance of peace.

 

12 The sinner will watch the righteous and gnash his teeth at him;

 

13 but the Lord will laugh him to scorn, for he foresees that his day will come.

 

14 Sinners have drawn the sword, they have bent their bow to cast down the poor and needy, to slaughter the upright in heart;

 

15 may their sword enter into their own heart, and may their bows be shattered.

 

16 Better is a little for the righteous than the great wealth of sinners;

 

17 for the arms of sinners shall be shattered, but the Lord upholds the righteous.

 

18 The Lord knows the ways of the blameless, and their inheritance shall be forever;

 

19 they shall not be put to shame in an evil time, and in days of famine they shall be satisfied.

 

20 For the sinners shall perish, and the enemies of the Lord, at the very moment of their being glorified and exalted, have vanished away, vanishing like smoke.

 

21 The sinner borrows and will not repay, but the righteous is compassionate and gives;

 

22 for those who bless him shall inherit the land, but those who curse him shall be utterly destroyed.

 

23 By the Lord the steps of a man are directed, and he will delight in his way;

 

24 when he falls, he shall not be dashed down, for the Lord upholds his hand.

 

25 I was young, and indeed I have grown old, and I have not seen a righteous man forsaken, nor his offspring begging bread;

 

26 all day long he shows mercy and lends, and his offspring shall be for a blessing.

 

27 Turn away from evil and do good, and dwell forever and ever;

 

28 for the Lord loves judgment and will not forsake his holy ones; they shall be kept forever. But the lawless shall be driven out, and the offspring of the ungodly shall be utterly destroyed;

 

29 but the righteous shall inherit the land and dwell upon it forever and ever.

 

30 The mouth of the righteous shall meditate wisdom, and his tongue shall speak judgment;

 

31 the law of his God is in his heart, and his steps shall not be tripped up.

 

32 The sinner observes the righteous and seeks to put him to death,

 

33 but the Lord will by no means abandon him into his hands, nor condemn him when he is judged by him.

 

34 Wait upon the Lord and keep his way, and he will exalt you to inherit the land; when sinners are utterly destroyed, you shall see it.

 

35 I saw the ungodly man highly exalted and lifting himself up like the cedars of Lebanon;

 

36 and I passed by, and behold, he was not, and I sought him, and his place was not found.

 

37 Keep innocence and behold uprightness, for there is a remnant for the peaceable man;

 

38 but the lawless shall be utterly destroyed together; the remnants of the ungodly shall be utterly destroyed.

 

39 But the salvation of the righteous is from the Lord, and he is their defender in a time of affliction,

 

40 and the Lord will help them and rescue them and deliver them from sinners and save them, because they hoped in him. 

 

Psalm 37

2 O Lord, do not rebuke me in your wrath, nor chasten me in your anger.

 

3 For your arrows are fixed in me, and you have pressed your hand heavily upon me.

 

4 There is no healing in my flesh because of your anger; there is no peace in my bones because of my sins.

 

5 For my iniquities have risen over my head; like a heavy burden they have weighed heavily upon me.

 

6 My wounds have grown foul and festered because of my folly.

2 I said, "I will guard my ways, so that I do not sin with my tongue"; I set a guard upon my mouth while the sinner stood before me.

 

3 I was struck dumb and humbled and kept silent even from good things, and my pain was renewed.

 

4 My heart grew hot within me, and in my meditation a fire will be kindled. I spoke with my tongue:

 

5 Make known to me, Lord, my end and the number of my days, what it is, that I may know what I lack.

 

6 Behold, you have made my days as handbreadths, and my substance is as nothing before you; indeed, all things are vanity, every living man. Pause.

 

7 Surely man passes by as an image; yet they are troubled in vain: he stores up treasure and does not know for whom he will gather these things.

 

8 And now, what is my hope? Is it not the Lord? And my substance is from you.

5 Blessed is the man whose hope is the name of the Lord, and who has not looked to vanities and false frenzies.

 

6 Many things have you done, O Lord my God—your wondrous works—and in your thoughts there is none who shall be likened to you; I proclaimed and spoke: they were multiplied beyond number.

 

7 Sacrifice and offering you did not desire, but ears you prepared for me; whole burnt offering and offering for sin you did not require.

 

8 Then I said, Behold, I have come; in the scroll of the book it is written concerning me:

5 I said, "Lord, have mercy on me; heal my soul, for I have sinned against you."

 

6 My enemies spoke evil against me: "When will he die, and his name perish?"

Psalm 49

 

1 A Psalm of Asaph. The God of gods, the Lord, has spoken and called the earth from the rising of the sun to its setting.

 

2 Out of Zion is the splendor of his beauty; God shall come manifestly,

 

3 our God, and shall not keep silence: a fire shall burn before him, and around him a mighty tempest.

 

4 He shall summon the heaven above and the earth, to judge his people:

 

5 Gather to him his holy ones, those who make his covenant upon sacrifices,

 

6 and the heavens shall declare his righteousness, for God is judge. Pause.

 

7 Hear, my people, and I will speak to you, O Israel, and I will testify to you: I am God, your God.

 

8 I will not reprove you for your sacrifices, and your whole burnt offerings are before me continually.

 

9 I will not accept calves out of your house, nor he-goats out of your flocks.

16 But to the sinner God said: Why do you recount my ordinances, and take up my covenant in your mouth?

 

17 You have hated instruction, and cast my words behind you.

 

18 If you saw a thief, you ran along with him, and with adulterers you cast in your lot.

 

19 Your mouth has multiplied wickedness, and your tongue has woven deceit.

 

20 Sitting, you spoke against your brother, and against your mother's son you laid a stumbling block.

 

21These things you did, and I kept silent; you supposed lawlessly that I would be like you. I will reprove you, and set your sins before your face.

 

22 Understand now these things, you who forget God, lest he seize you and there be none to deliver.

 

23 A sacrifice of praise shall glorify me, and there is the way in which I will show him the salvation of God. 

 

Psalm 50

2 when Nathan the prophet came to him, after he had gone in to Bathsheba.

 

3 Have mercy on me, O God, according to your great mercy, and according to the multitude of your compassions blot out my transgression.

 

4 Wash me more and more from my lawlessness, and cleanse me from my sin.

 

5 For I know my lawlessness, and my sin is before me continually.

 

6 Against you alone have I sinned, and I have done what is evil in your sight, so that you may be justified in your words and prevail when you are judged.

 

7 For behold, I was conceived in lawlessness, and in sins my mother conceived me.

 

8 For behold, you have loved truth; the unclear and hidden things of your wisdom you have made known to me.

 

9 You will sprinkle me with hyssop, and I shall be cleansed; you will wash me, and I shall be made whiter than snow.

14 Restore to me the gladness of your salvation, and strengthen me with a guiding spirit.

 

15 I will teach the lawless your ways, and the ungodly will return to you.

 

16 Deliver me from bloodshed, O God, O God of my salvation; my tongue will rejoice in your righteousness.

 

17 O Lord, you will open my lips, and my mouth will declare your praise.

 

18 For if you had desired sacrifice, I would have given it; you will not take pleasure in whole burnt offerings.

 

19 A sacrifice to God is a broken spirit; a broken and humbled heart God will not despise.

 

20 Do good, O Lord, in your good pleasure to Zion, and let the walls of Jerusalem be built.

 

21 Then you will take pleasure in a sacrifice of righteousness, an offering and whole burnt offerings; then they will offer calves upon your altar. 

 

Psalm 51

2 when Doeg the Edomite came and told Saul and said to him, "David has come to the house of Abimelech."

 

3 Why do you boast in evil, O mighty one, in lawlessness all the day?

 

4 Your tongue has devised injustice; like a sharpened razor you have wrought deceit.

 

5 You have loved evil more than goodness, injustice more than speaking righteousness. Pause.

 

6 You have loved all words of drowning, a deceitful tongue.

 

7 Therefore God will pull you down to the end; may he pluck you out and remove you from your dwelling, and your root from the land of the living. Pause.

 

8 And the righteous will see and fear, and they will laugh at him and say,

 

9 "Behold a man who did not make God his helper, but hoped in the abundance of his wealth and grew strong in his vanity."

 

10 But I am like a fruitful olive tree in the house of God; I have hoped in the mercy of God forever and ever.

 

11 I will give thanks to you forever, because you have acted, and I will wait upon your name, for it is good before your holy ones. 

 

Psalm 52

 

1 For the end, upon Mahalath; of understanding, for David.

 

2 The fool said in his heart, There is no God. They have become corrupt and abominable in their lawless deeds; there is none that does good.

 

3 God looked down from heaven upon the sons of men, to see if there is any that understands or seeks after God.

 

4 They have all turned aside, together they have become worthless; there is none that does good, no, not even one.

 

5 Shall not all the workers of lawlessness know? They who devour my people as they eat bread have not called upon God.

 

6 There they shall fear with fear where no fear was, for God has scattered the bones of men-pleasers; they were put to shame, for God despised them.

 

7 Who will give out of Zion the salvation of Israel? When the Lord turns back the captivity of his people, Jacob shall rejoice and Israel shall be glad. 

  

Psalm 53

2 when the Ziphites came and said to Saul, "Behold, is not David hidden among us?"

 

3 O God, save me by your name, and judge me by your power.

3 attend to me and hear me. I was grieved in my meditation and was troubled

 

4 at the voice of the enemy and at the affliction of the sinner, for they turned lawlessness upon me, and in anger they bore a grudge against me.

 

5 My heart was troubled within me, and the terror of death fell upon me;

 

6 fear and trembling came upon me, and darkness covered me.

 

7 And I said, Who will give me wings like a dove's, and I will fly away and be at rest?

 

8 Behold, I fled far away and lodged in the wilderness. Pause.

 

9 I waited for him who saves me from faintheartedness and from the tempest.

 

10 Drown them, O Lord, and divide their tongues, for I have seen lawlessness and strife in the city.

16 Let death come upon them, and let them go down alive into Hades, for wickedness is in their dwellings, in their midst.

18 Evening and morning and at noon I will tell and declare, and he will hear my voice.

 

19 He will redeem my soul in peace from those who draw near to me, for among many they were with me.

2 Have mercy on me, Lord, for man has trampled me down; all day long, warring, he has afflicted me.

 

3 My enemies have trampled me down all day long, for many are those who war against me from on high.

 

4 By day I shall be afraid, but I will hope in you.

 

5 In God I will praise my words all day long. In God I have hoped; I will not be afraid: what shall flesh do to me?

 

6 All day long they abhorred my words; against me all their thoughts were for evil.

5 Their wrath is according to the likeness of the serpent, like a deaf asp that stops up her ears,

5 without lawlessness I ran and kept a straight course. Arise to meet me, and see.

3 I am stuck fast in the mire of the deep, and there is no foothold; I have come into the depths of the sea, and a storm has overwhelmed me.

 

4 I have grown weary with crying, my throat has become hoarse; my eyes have failed from hoping in my God.

 

5 Those who hate me without cause have multiplied beyond the hairs of my head; my enemies who persecute me unjustly have grown strong; what I did not seize, I then had to repay.

 

6 O God, you know my foolishness, and my transgressions are not hidden from you.

 

7 Let not those who wait upon you be ashamed on my account, O Lord, Lord of hosts; let not those who seek you be put to shame on my account, O God of Israel;

23 My lips shall rejoice when I sing to you, and my soul, which you have redeemed.

 

24 And moreover my tongue shall meditate all the day long on your righteousness, when those who seek evils for me are put to shame and confounded. 

 

Psalm 71

 

1 For Solomon. O God, give your judgment to the king and your righteousness to the king's son,

 

2 to judge your people in righteousness and your poor in judgment.

 

3 Let the mountains take up peace for your people, and the hills in righteousness.

 

4 He will judge the poor of the people and save the sons of the needy, and he will humble the slanderer,

 

5 and he will endure with the sun and before the moon for generations of generations,

 

6 and he will come down like rain upon a fleece, and like drops dripping upon the earth.

 

7 In his days righteousness will rise up, and abundance of peace, until the moon is removed.

 

8 And he will have dominion from sea to sea, and from the river to the ends of the inhabited world.

 

9 Before him the Ethiopians will fall down, and his enemies will lick the dust.

 

10 The kings of Tarshish and the islands will bring gifts; the kings of the Arabs and Saba will bring gifts near.

 

11 And all the kings will do obeisance to him; all the nations will serve him.

 

12 For he rescued the poor from the hand of the mighty, and the needy who had no helper.

 

13 He will spare the poor and needy, and he will save the souls of the needy.

 

14 From usury and from injustice he will redeem their souls, and their name will be honored before him.

 

15 And he will live, and there will be given to him from the gold of Arabia, and they will pray concerning him continually; all day long they will bless him.

 

16 There will be a firm support on the earth on the tops of the mountains; his fruit will be exalted above Lebanon, and they will blossom out of the city like the grass of the earth.

 

17 Let his name be blessed forever; his name will endure before the sun, and all the tribes of the earth will be blessed in him; all the nations will call him blessed.

 

18 Blessed be the Lord God, the God of Israel, who alone does wonders,

Psalm 72

 

1 A Psalm of Asaph. How good is God to Israel, to the upright in heart!

 

2 But as for me, my feet were almost shaken; my steps had well-nigh slipped.

 

3 For I was envious of the lawless, seeing the peace of sinners,

 

4 for there is no refusal in their death, and firmness in their scourge;

 

5 they are not in the troubles of men, and they shall not be scourged with men.

 

6 Therefore pride has taken hold of them; they have clothed themselves with their injustice and impiety.

 

7 Their injustice shall come forth as out of fat; they have passed into the disposition of the heart.

 

8 They have devised and spoken in wickedness; they have spoken injustice on high.

 

9 They have set their mouth against heaven, and their tongue has gone through upon the earth.

 

10 Therefore my people shall return here, and full days shall be found for them.

 

11 And they said, "How does God know? And is there knowledge in the Most High?"

 

12 Behold, these are sinners, and they prosper; forever they have possessed wealth.

 

13 And I said, "Then in vain have I justified my heart and washed my hands among the innocent;

 

14 and I was scourged all the day, and my reproof came in the mornings."

 

15 If I had said, "I will speak thus," behold, I would have broken faith with the generation of your sons.

 

16 And I undertook to understand this: it is toil before me,

 

17 until I go into the sanctuary of God and understand their latter end.

 

18 Nevertheless, because of their deceits you appointed evils for them; you cast them down when they were lifted up.

 

19 How they came to desolation suddenly! They failed; they perished because of their lawlessness.

 

20 As the dream of one awaking, O Lord, in your city you will bring their image to naught.

 

21 For my heart was kindled, and my kidneys were changed,

 

22 and I was brought to nothing and did not know; I became as a beast before you.

 

23 Yet I am continually with you; you have held my right hand.

 

24 By your counsel you have guided me, and with glory you have received me.

 

25 For what have I in heaven? And besides you, what have I desired upon earth?

 

26 My heart and my flesh have failed; the God of my heart, and God is my portion forever.

 

27 For behold, those who remove themselves far from you shall perish; you have destroyed everyone who goes whoring from you.

 

28 But as for me, it is good to cleave to God, to put my hope in the Lord, that I may declare all your praises in the gates of the daughter of Zion. 

  

Psalm 73

 

1 Of understanding, for Asaph. Why, O God, have you cast us off unto the end? Why is your anger kindled against the sheep of your pasture?

 

2 Remember your congregation, which you acquired from the beginning; you redeemed the rod of your inheritance, this mount Zion, wherein you dwelt.

 

3 Lift up your hands against their acts of pride unto the end, all the evil the enemy has wrought in your holy places.

 

4 And those who hate you have boasted in the midst of your feast; they set up their signs as signs, and knew it not.

 

5 As at the entrance above,

 

6 as in a forest of trees, with axes they cut down its doors; together with hatchet and stone-cutter's tool they broke it down.

 

7 They burned your sanctuary with fire; they profaned to the ground the dwelling of your name.

 

8 They said in their heart, their kindred together: Come, let us burn all the feasts of God from the land.

 

9 We have not seen our signs; there is no longer a prophet, and he will know us no more.

 

10 How long, O God, shall the enemy reproach? Shall the adversary provoke your name unto the end?

 

11 Why do you turn away your hand, and your right hand from the midst of your bosom unto the end?

 

12 But God is our king before the ages; he wrought salvation in the midst of the earth.

 

13 You made firm the sea by your power; you crushed the heads of the dragons upon the water.

 

14 You broke the heads of the dragon; you gave him as food to the Ethiopian peoples.

 

15 You broke open springs and torrents; you dried up the rivers of Etham.

 

16 Yours is the day, and yours is the night; you established the light and the sun.

 

17 You made all the borders of the earth; summer and spring, you fashioned them.

 

18 Remember this: the enemy has reproached the Lord, and a foolish people has provoked your name.

 

19 Do not deliver to the wild beasts the soul that confesses to you; do not forget the souls of your needy ones unto the end.

 

20 Look upon your covenant, for the dark places of the earth are filled with houses of lawlessness.

 

21 Let not the humbled one be turned away in shame; the poor and the needy shall praise your name.

 

22 Arise, O God, plead your own cause; remember the reproaches against you from the fool all the day long.

 

23 Do not forget the voice of your suppliants; the pride of those who hate you rises up continually before you. 

  

Psalm 74

 

1 For the end; do not destroy; a psalm of a song for Asaph.

 

2 We will give thanks to you, O God, we will give thanks and call upon your name.

 

3 I will recount all your wondrous works, when I take the appointed time; I will judge with uprightness.

 

4 The earth melted away, and all who dwell in it; I made firm its pillars. Selah.

 

5 I said to the lawless, Do not act lawlessly, and to the sinners, Do not lift up the horn;

 

6 do not raise your horn on high, do not speak unrighteousness against God.

 

7 For neither from the goings forth, nor from the west, nor from the desert mountains

 

8 for God is judge; this one he humbles and that one he exalts.

 

9 For there is a cup in the hand of the Lord, of unmixed wine, full of mixture, and he has poured out from this into that; yet its dregs were not emptied out; all the sinners of the earth shall drink.

 

10 But I will rejoice forever; I will sing psalms to the God of Jacob;

 

11 and I will break in pieces all the horns of the sinners, and the horns of the righteous shall be exalted. 

 

Psalm 75

 

1 For the end, among the hymns; a psalm for Asaph, a song concerning the Assyrian.

 

2 God is known in Judea; in Israel his name is great.

 

3 And his place has been established in peace, and his dwelling in Zion.

 

4 There he broke the strength of the bows, shield and sword and battle. Pause.

 

5 You shine wondrously from the everlasting mountains.

 

6 All the senseless in heart were troubled; they slept their sleep, and all the men of wealth found nothing in their hands.

 

7 At your rebuke, O God of Jacob, those mounted on horses fell into slumber.

 

8 You are fearful, and who shall withstand you? From that time is your wrath.

 

9 From heaven you caused judgment to be heard; the earth feared and was still,

 

10 when God arose to judgment, to save all the meek of the earth. Pause.

 

11 For the thought of man shall give thanks to you, and the remnant of thought shall keep festival to you.

 

12 Vow and pay to the Lord your God; all those round about him shall bring gifts

 

13 to him who is fearful and who takes away the spirits of rulers, fearful among the kings of the earth. 

 

Psalm 76

 

1 For the end, for Jeduthun; a psalm of Asaph.

 

2 With my voice I cried to the Lord, with my voice to God, and he attended to me.

 

3 In the day of my affliction I sought out God; with my hands by night before him, and I was not deceived; my soul refused to be comforted.

 

4 I remembered God and was gladdened; I mused, and my spirit grew faint. Pause.

 

5 My eyes anticipated the watches; I was troubled and did not speak.

 

6 I considered the days of old, and I remembered the years of eternity and meditated; 7 by night I communed with my heart, and my spirit searched diligently.

 

8 Will the Lord cast off forever, and will he be favorable no more?

 

9 Or will he cut off his mercy to the end, from generation to generation?

 

10 Or will God forget to have compassion, or will he shut up his compassions in his anger? Pause.

 

11 And I said, Now I have begun; this is the change of the right hand of the Most High.

 

 

12 I remembered the works of the Lord; for I will remember your wonders from the beginning,

 

13 and I will meditate on all your works, and I will muse on your doings.

 

14 O God, your way is in the sanctuary; what god is great as our God?

 

15 You are the God who works wonders; you have made known your power among the peoples.

 

16 With your arm you redeemed your people, the sons of Jacob and Joseph. Pause.

 

17 The waters saw you, O God, the waters saw you and were afraid, and the deeps were troubled, an abundance of the sound of waters.

 

18 The clouds gave forth a voice, for indeed your arrows pass through;

Psalm 77

 

1 A psalm of understanding, of Asaph. Give heed, my people, to my law; incline your ear to the words of my mouth.

 

2 I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter riddles from the beginning,

 

3 all that we have heard and known, and that our fathers recounted to us.

 

4 It was not hidden from their children for another generation, as they proclaimed the praises of the Lord and his mighty acts and his wonders which he did.

 

5 And he raised up a testimony in Jacob and set a law in Israel, all that he commanded our fathers, to make them known to their sons,

 

6 so that another generation might know them, the sons who would be born; and they shall rise up and proclaim them to their sons,

 

7 so that they may set their hope on God and not forget the works of God, but seek out his commandments;

 

8 so that they may not be like their fathers, a crooked and embittering generation, a generation that did not set its heart aright, and whose spirit was not faithful with God.

 

9 The sons of Ephraim, bending and shooting with bows, turned back in the day of battle.

 

10 They did not keep the covenant of God, and in his law they refused to walk;

 

11 and they forgot his benefits and his wonders which he had shown them,

 

12 the wonders that he did before their fathers in the land of Egypt, in the plain of Tanis.

 

13 He split the sea and led them through; he made the waters stand as in a wineskin,

 

14 and he guided them with a cloud by day and all the night with a light of fire.

 

15 He split a rock in the wilderness and gave them drink as from a great deep,

 

16 and he brought water out of the rock and brought down waters like rivers.

 

17 And they still went on sinning against him; they embittered the Most High in a waterless land,

 

18 and they tested God in their hearts by demanding food for their souls.

 

19 And they spoke against God and said, "Can God prepare a table in the wilderness?

 

20 Since he struck the rock and waters flowed and torrents overflowed, can he also give bread, or prepare a table for his people?"

 

21 Therefore the Lord heard and was provoked, and fire was kindled in Jacob, and wrath rose up against Israel,

 

22 because they did not believe in God nor hope in his salvation.

 

23 And he commanded the clouds from above and opened the doors of heaven,

 

24 and he rained down manna upon them to eat, and gave them the bread of heaven;

 

25 man ate the bread of angels; he sent them provision to the full.

 

26 He removed the south wind from heaven, and by his power he brought in the southwest wind,

 

27 and he rained flesh upon them like dust, and winged birds like the sand of the seas,

 

28 and they fell in the midst of their camp, all around their tents;

 

29 and they ate and were filled exceedingly, and he brought them their desire;

 

30 they were not deprived of their desire. While their food was still in their mouths,

 

31 the wrath of God rose up against them and slew some of their strongest, and struck down the chosen men of Israel.

 

32 In all these things they still sinned and did not believe in his wonders;

 

33 and their days vanished in vanity, and their years with haste.

 

34 When he was slaying them, they would seek him and turn back and rise early to seek God,

 

35 and they remembered that God is their helper, and God the Most High is their redeemer.

 

36 And they deceived him with their mouth, and with their tongue they lied to him;

 

37 but their heart was not upright with him, nor were they faithful in his covenant.

 

38 But he is compassionate and will forgive their sins and will not destroy; and he will many times turn away his anger and will not kindle all his wrath.

 

39 And he remembered that they are flesh, a breath that passes and does not return.

 

40 How often they embittered him in the wilderness, provoked him to anger in a waterless land!

 

41 And they turned back and tested God, and provoked the Holy One of Israel.

 

42 They did not remember his hand, the day when he redeemed them from the hand of the oppressor,

 

43 how he set his signs in Egypt and his wonders in the plain of Tanis;

 

44 and he turned their rivers into blood, and their rain-streams, so that they could not drink.

 

45 He sent among them the dog-fly, and it devoured them, and the frog, and it destroyed them;

 

46 and he gave their fruit to the blight and their labors to the locust;

 

47 he killed their vine with hail and their sycamore trees with frost;

 

48 and he delivered their cattle to the hail and their possessions to the fire;

 

49 he sent upon them the fury of his anger, wrath and anger and affliction, a mission by evil angels.

 

50 He made a path for his anger; he did not spare their souls from death, and he shut up their cattle to death;

 

51 and he struck every firstborn in Egypt, the firstfruits of their labors in the tents of Ham.

 

52 And he removed his people like sheep and led them up like a flock in the wilderness,

 

53 and he guided them in hope, and they were not afraid; and the sea covered their enemies.

 

54 And he brought them to the border of his sanctuary, this mountain which his right hand had acquired,

 

55 and he cast out nations from before them, and allotted them by a line of inheritance, and made the tribes of Israel dwell in their tents.

 

56 And they tested and embittered God the Most High, and did not keep his testimonies;

 

57 and they turned away and were faithless, like their fathers; they were turned into a crooked bow,

 

58 and they provoked him to anger with their high places, and moved him to jealousy with their carved images.

 

59 God heard and disregarded, and utterly rejected Israel;

 

60 and he cast off the tabernacle of Shiloh, his dwelling where he dwelt among men.

 

61 And he delivered their strength into captivity, and their beauty into the hands of the enemy;

 

62 and he shut up his people to the sword, and disregarded his inheritance.

 

63 Fire devoured their young men, and their virgins were not mourned;

 

64 their priests fell by the sword, and their widows shall not be wept for.

 

65 And the Lord was roused as one who sleeps, like a mighty man overcome with wine,

 

66 and he struck his enemies from behind; he gave them everlasting reproach.

 

67 And he rejected the tent of Joseph, and did not choose the tribe of Ephraim;

 

68 but he chose the tribe of Judah, Mount Zion, which he loved,

 

69 and he built his sanctuary like that of unicorns; on the earth he founded it forever.

 

70 And he chose David his servant and took him from the flocks of sheep;

 

71 from behind the ewes with young he took him, to shepherd Jacob his people and Israel his inheritance.

 

72 And he shepherded them in the innocence of his heart, and with the skillfulness of his hands he guided them. 

 

Psalm 78

 

1 A Psalm of Asaph. O God, the nations have come into your inheritance; they have defiled your holy temple; they have made Jerusalem a storehouse of fruits.

 

2 They have made the dead bodies of your servants food for the birds of the sky, the flesh of your holy ones for the beasts of the earth.

 

3 They have poured out their blood like water around Jerusalem, and there was no one to bury them.

 

4 We have become a reproach to our neighbors, a scorn and derision to those around us.

 

5 How long, O Lord? Will you be angry forever? Will your jealousy burn like fire?

 

6 Pour out your wrath upon the nations that do not know you, and upon the kingdoms that have not called upon your name;

 

7 for they have devoured Jacob and laid waste his place.

 

8 Do not remember our former iniquities; let your compassions quickly go before us, for we have become exceedingly poor.

 

9 Help us, O God our savior; for the sake of the glory of your name, O Lord, deliver us, and be merciful to our sins for your name's sake,

 

10 lest the nations say, "Where is their God?" And let the avenging of the blood of your servants that has been poured out be known among the nations before our eyes.

 

11 Let the groaning of the prisoners come before you; according to the greatness of your arm, preserve the sons of those who have been put to death.

 

12 Repay our neighbors sevenfold into their bosom their reproach with which they reproached you, O Lord.

 

13 But we, your people and the sheep of your pasture, will give thanks to you forever; to generation and generation we will declare your praise. 

 

Psalm 79

 

1 For the end, concerning those who shall be changed; a testimony for Asaph, a psalm concerning the Assyrian.

 

2 O Shepherd of Israel, give heed, you who lead Joseph like sheep; you who sit upon the cherubim, appear.

 

3 Before Ephraim and Benjamin and Manasseh, stir up your power, and come to save us.

 

4 O God, turn us back, and show your face, and we shall be saved.

 

5 O Lord God of hosts, how long will you be angry at the prayer of your servant?

 

6 Will you feed us with the bread of tears, and give us tears to drink in measure?

 

7 You have made us a strife to our neighbors, and our enemies have mocked us.

 

8 O Lord God of hosts, turn us back, and show your face, and we shall be saved. Selah.

 

9 You removed a vine out of Egypt; you cast out the nations and planted it.

 

10 You made a way before it, and planted its roots, and the land was filled.

 

11 Its shadow covered the mountains, and its shoots the cedars of God.

13 Why have you broken down its hedge, so that all who pass along the way pluck it?

 

14 The boar out of the forest has ravaged it, and the wild solitary beast has fed upon it.

 

15 O God of hosts, turn back, we pray; look down from heaven and see, and visit this vine,

 

16 and restore that which your right hand planted, and look upon the son of man whom you made strong for yourself.

 

17 It is burned with fire and dug up; at the rebuke of your face they shall perish.

 

18 Let your hand be upon the man of your right hand, and upon the son of man whom you made strong for yourself.

 

19 And we will not depart from you; you will quicken us, and we will call upon your name.

 

20 O Lord God of hosts, turn us back, and show your face, and we shall be saved. 

 

Psalm 80

 

1 For the end, concerning the winepresses; a psalm of Asaph.

 

2 Rejoice greatly in God our helper; shout aloud to the God of Jacob.

 

3 Take up a psalm and bring the timbrel, the pleasant psaltery with the harp.

 

4 Blow the trumpet at the new moon, on the appointed day of our feast;

 

5 for it is an ordinance for Israel, and a decree of the God of Jacob.

 

6 He established it as a testimony in Joseph, when he went out of the land of Egypt; he heard a tongue which he did not know.

 

7 He removed his back from burdens; his hands served with the basket.

 

8 In affliction you called upon me, and I delivered you; I heard you in the secret place of the storm; I tested you at the water of strife. Pause.

 

9 Hear, O my people, and I will testify to you: O Israel, if you will hear me,

 

10 there shall be no new god among you, nor shall you worship a foreign god;

 

11 for I am the Lord your God, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt: open wide your mouth, and I will fill it.

 

12 But my people did not hear my voice, and Israel gave no heed to me.

 

13 So I sent them away according to the devices of their hearts; they shall walk in their own devices.

 

14 If my people had heard me, if Israel had walked in my ways,

 

15 I would have humbled their enemies to nothing, and laid my hand upon those who afflict them.

 

16 The enemies of the Lord lied to him, and their time shall be forever.

 

17 And he fed them with the finest of wheat, and satisfied them with honey out of the rock. 

 

Psalm 81

 

1 A Psalm of Asaph. God stands in the assembly of gods, and in the midst he judges gods.

 

2 How long will you judge unjustly and show partiality to sinners? Selah.

 

3 Judge for the orphan and the poor; do justice to the lowly and the needy.

 

4 Rescue the needy and the poor; deliver them from the hand of the sinner.

 

5 They have neither known nor understood; they walk about in darkness; all the foundations of the earth shall be shaken.

 

6 I said, "You are gods, and all of you sons of the Most High;

 

7 but you die like men, and fall like one of the rulers."

 

8 Arise, O God, judge the earth, for you shall inherit among all the nations. 

 

Psalm 82

 

1 A Song of a Psalm for Asaph.

 

2 O God, who shall be likened to you? Do not keep silence, nor be still, O God;

 

3 for behold, your enemies have made a noise, and those who hate you have lifted up their head.

 

4 Against your people they have contrived a crafty plan, and have conspired against your holy ones.

 

5 They said, "Come, and let us utterly destroy them from being a nation, and let the name of Israel be remembered no more."

 

6 For they conspired with one accord together; against you they made a covenant

 

7 the tents of the Edomites and the Ishmaelites, Moab and the Hagarenes,

 

8 Gebal and Ammon and Amalek, and the foreigners with the inhabitants of Tyre;

 

9 for indeed Assur also came along with them; they became a help to the sons of Lot. Interlude.

 

10 Do to them as to Midian and to Sisera, as to Jabin at the brook Kishon:

 

11 they were utterly destroyed at Endor; they became like dung for the earth.

 

12 Make their rulers like Oreb and Zeeb and Zebah and Zalmunna, all their rulers,

 

13 who said, "Let us take for ourselves the sanctuary of God as an inheritance."

 

14 O my God, make them like a wheel, like stubble before the face of the wind;

 

15 like fire that will burn through a forest, as a flame might consume mountains,

 

16 so shall you pursue them with your tempest, and with your wrath you shall trouble them.

 

17 Fill their faces with dishonor, and they shall seek your name, O Lord.

 

18 Let them be put to shame and troubled forever and ever; let them be confounded and perish,

 

19 and let them know that your name is Lord—you alone are Most High over all the earth. 

 

Psalm 83

 

1 For the end, concerning the winepresses; a psalm for the sons of Korah.

 

2 How beloved are your dwellings, O Lord of hosts.

 

3 My soul longs and faints for the courts of the Lord; my heart and my flesh have rejoiced in the living God.

 

4 For even the sparrow has found itself a house, and the turtledove a nest for herself, where she will lay her young, your altars, O Lord of hosts, my King and my God.

 

5 Blessed are those who dwell in your house; they will praise you forever and ever. Selah.

 

6 Blessed is the man whose help is from you, O Lord; he has set ascents in his heart,

 

7 in the valley of weeping, to the place which he appointed; for the lawgiver will give blessings.

 

8 They will go from strength to strength; the God of gods will be seen in Zion.

1 For the end; a psalm for the sons of Korah.

 

2 You have shown favor, O Lord, to your land; you have turned back the captivity of Jacob.

 

3 You have forgiven the lawless deeds of your people; you have covered all their sins. Pause.

 

4 You have stilled all your wrath; you have turned back from the anger of your fury.

 

5 Restore us, O God of our salvations, and turn your fury away from us.

 

6 Will you be angry with us forever, or will you stretch out your wrath from generation to generation?

 

7 O God, you will turn and give us life, and your people shall rejoice in you.

 

8 Show us, O Lord, your mercy, and may you grant us your salvation.

 

9 I will hear what the Lord God will speak in me, for he will speak peace to his people, and to his holy ones, and to those who turn their heart to him.

16 Look upon me and have mercy on me; give your strength to your servant, and save the son of your handmaid.

 

17 Perform with me a sign for good, and let those who hate me see and be put to shame, for you, O Lord, have helped me and comforted me. 

 

Psalm 86

 

1 For the sons of Korah, a psalm of a song. His foundations are in the holy mountains;

 

2 the Lord loves the gates of Zion more than all the dwellings of Jacob.

 

3 Glorious things have been spoken concerning you, O city of God. Selah.

 

4 I will make mention of Rahab and Babylon to those who know me; and behold, the foreigners and Tyre and the people of the Ethiopians, these were born there.

 

5 "Mother Zion," a man will say, and a man was born in her, and the Most High himself founded her.

 

6 The Lord will recount in the register of peoples and of these rulers who were born in her. Selah.

 

7 The dwelling of all who rejoice is in you. 

 

Psalm 87

2 O Lord, God of my salvation, by day I cried out, and by night before you;

 

3 let my prayer come in before you; incline your ear to my supplication, O Lord.

 

4 For my soul has been filled with evils, and my life has drawn near to Hades;

 

5 I was counted with those who go down into the pit; I became like a man without help, free among the dead,

 

6 like the slain, cast away, sleeping in the tomb, whom you remember no more, and they were thrust away from your hand.

 

7 They laid me in the lowest pit, in dark places and in the shadow of death.

 

8 Your wrath has pressed hard upon me, and you have brought all your billows upon me. Selah.

3 for you said: Mercy shall be built up forever; your truth shall be established in the heavens.

 

4 I made a covenant with my chosen ones; I swore to David my servant:

 

5 Forever I will establish your seed, and I will build your throne to generation and generation. Pause.

 

6 The heavens shall confess your wonders, O Lord, and your truth in the assembly of the holy ones.

Psalm 89

 

1 A prayer of Moses, the man of God. Lord, you have been our refuge from generation to generation;

 

2 before the mountains came into being and the earth and the inhabited world were formed, and from everlasting to everlasting you are.

 

3 Do not turn man back to humiliation; and you said, "Return, sons of men."

 

4 For a thousand years in your eyes are as the day of yesterday, which has passed, and as a watch in the night.

 

5 Their years of nothing shall be. In the morning may it pass away like grass,

 

6 in the morning may it flower and pass away, in the evening may it fall off, be hardened and withered.

 

7 For we have failed in your wrath, and in your anger we were troubled.

 

8 You set our lawless deeds before you; our lifetime is in the light of your face.

 

9 For all our days have failed, and in your wrath we have failed; our years pondered like a spider's web.

 

10 The days of our years, in them are seventy years, and if by strength, eighty years, and the greater part of them is toil and trouble; for meekness has come upon us, and we shall be chastened.

Psalm 90

 

1A song of praise, of David. He who dwells in the help of the Most High shall lodge in the shelter of the God of heaven.

 

2He will say to the Lord, "You are my protector and my refuge, my God; I will hope in him,"

 

3for he will deliver me from the snare of hunters and from a troubling word.

 

4With his shoulders he will overshadow you, and under his wings you will hope; his truth will surround you as a shield.

 

5You will not be afraid of terror by night, of an arrow flying by day,

 

6of a thing that walks about in darkness, of mishap and the noonday demon.

 

7A thousand shall fall at your side and ten thousand at your right hand, but it shall not come near you;

 

8only with your eyes shall you observe, and you shall see the recompense of sinners.

 

9For you, O Lord, are my hope; you made the Most High your refuge.

 

10No evils shall come near you, and no scourge shall approach your dwelling,

 

11for he will command his angels concerning you, to guard you in all your ways;

 

12upon their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone;

 

13 you will tread upon the asp and the basilisk, and you will trample the lion and the serpent.

 

14 "Because he hoped in me, I will deliver him; I will shelter him, because he knew my name.

 

15 He will call upon me, and I will hearken to him; I am with him in affliction, and I will rescue him and glorify him.

 

16 With length of days I will satisfy him, and I will show him my salvation." 

 

Psalm 91

 

1 A Psalm of a song, for the day of the Sabbath.

 

2 It is good to give thanks to the Lord, and to sing praises to your name, O Most High,

 

3 to proclaim your mercy in the morning, and your truth by night,

 

4 on a ten-stringed psaltery, with a song upon the harp.

 

5 For you have gladdened me, O Lord, by your work, and in the works of your hands I shall rejoice.

 

6 How great are your works, O Lord; exceedingly deep are your thoughts.

 

7 A foolish man will not know, and one without understanding will not comprehend these things.

 

8 When the sinners sprang up like grass, and all the workers of lawlessness looked forth, it was that they might be utterly destroyed for ever and ever.

 

9 But you, O Lord, are Most High for ever;

 

10 for behold, your enemies shall perish, and all the workers of lawlessness shall be scattered,

 

11 and my horn shall be exalted like that of a unicorn, and my old age with rich oil,

 

12 and my eye has looked upon my enemies, and my ear shall hear concerning the evildoers who rise up against me.

 

13 The righteous shall flourish like a palm tree; like the cedar in Lebanon he shall be multiplied.

 

14 Those planted in the house of the Lord shall blossom forth in the courts of our God;

 

15 they shall yet be multiplied in a rich old age, and they shall live in comfort,

 

16 to proclaim that the Lord my God is upright, and there is no unrighteousness in him. 

 

Psalm 92

 

1 For the day before the Sabbath, when the earth was settled: a praise-song of David. The Lord has become king; he has clothed himself with majesty; the Lord has clothed himself with strength and girded himself. For he has also established the world, which shall not be shaken.

 

2 Your throne is prepared from of old; you are from everlasting.

 

3 The rivers have lifted up, O Lord, the rivers have lifted up their voices.

 

4 More than the voices of many waters, wonderful are the surgings of the sea; wonderful on high is the Lord.

 

5 Your testimonies have been made exceedingly sure; holiness befits your house, O Lord, unto length of days. 

 

Psalm 93

 

1 A Psalm of David, for the fourth day of the week. The Lord is a God of vengeance; the God of vengeance has spoken openly.

 

2 Be exalted, you who judge the earth; render recompense to the proud.

 

3 How long shall sinners, O Lord, how long shall sinners boast,

 

4 utter and speak unrighteousness, all the workers of lawlessness speak?

 

5 They have humbled your people, O Lord, and afflicted your inheritance;

 

6 they have slain the widow and the stranger, and murdered the orphans,

 

7 and they said, "The Lord will not see, nor will the God of Jacob understand."

 

8 Understand now, you senseless among the people; and you fools, at last be wise.

 

9 He who planted the ear, does he not hear? Or he who formed the eye, does he not perceive?

 

10 He who chastens the nations, shall he not rebuke—he who teaches man knowledge?

 

11 The Lord knows the thoughts of men, that they are vain.

 

12 Blessed is the man whom you shall chasten, O Lord, and shall teach him out of your law,

 

13 to give him rest from evil days, until a pit is dug for the sinner.

 

14 For the Lord will not cast off his people, and he will not forsake his inheritance,

 

15 until righteousness returns to judgment, and all the upright in heart hold fast to it. Pause.

 

16 Who will rise up for me against evildoers? Or who will stand with me against the workers of lawlessness?

 

17 If the Lord had not helped me, my soul would almost have dwelt in Hades.

 

18 If I said, "My foot has slipped," your mercy, O Lord, helps me.

 

19 O Lord, according to the multitude of my sorrows in my heart, your consolations have loved my soul.

 

20 Shall a throne of lawlessness have fellowship with you, one that frames trouble by decree?

 

21 They will hunt after the soul of the righteous, and condemn innocent blood.

 

22 But the Lord became my refuge, and my God the helper of my hope;

 

23 and he will repay them their lawlessness, and according to their wickedness the Lord our God will destroy them. 

 

Psalm 94

 

1 A praise-song of David. Come, let us rejoice in the Lord; let us shout aloud to God our savior.

 

2 Let us come before his face with thanksgiving, and with psalms let us shout aloud to him.

 

3 For the Lord is a great God, and a great King above all gods;

 

4 for in his hand are the ends of the earth, and the heights of the mountains are his;

 

5 for the sea is his, and he made it, and his hands formed the dry land.

 

6 Come, let us worship and fall down before him, and let us weep before the Lord who made us;

 

7 for he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture and the sheep of his hand. Today, if you hear his voice,

 

8 do not harden your hearts as in the provocation, as in the day of testing in the wilderness,

 

9 where your fathers tested me; they proved me and saw my works.

 

10 For forty years I was grieved with that generation, and I said, They always go astray in their heart, and they have not known my ways;

1 When the house was being built after the captivity; a song of David. Sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all the earth.

 

2 Sing to the Lord, bless his name; proclaim the good news of his salvation from day to day.

 

3 Declare his glory among the nations, his wonders among all the peoples.

 

4 For great is the Lord and greatly to be praised; he is fearful above all the gods.

 

5 For all the gods of the nations are demons, but the Lord made the heavens.

 

6 Confession and beauty are before him; holiness and majesty are in his sanctuary.

 

7 Bring to the Lord, you families of the nations, bring to the Lord glory and honor.

 

8 Bring to the Lord glory due his name; take up sacrifices and enter into his courts.

 

9 Worship the Lord in his holy court; let all the earth be shaken before his face.

 

10 Say among the nations, "The Lord has become king, for he has set the world aright, which shall not be shaken; he will judge the peoples with uprightness."

 

11 Let the heavens rejoice, and let the earth exult; let the sea be shaken, and its fullness.

 

12 The plains shall be glad, and all that is in them; then all the trees of the forest shall exult

 

13 before the face of the Lord, for he comes, for he comes to judge the earth; he will judge the world in righteousness and the peoples in his truth. 

 

Psalm 96

 

1 Of David, when his land was established. The Lord has become king; let the earth rejoice, let the many islands be glad.

 

2 Cloud and darkness are round about him; righteousness and judgment are the foundation of his throne.

 

3 Fire shall go before him and shall burn up his enemies round about.

 

4 His lightnings shone upon the world; the earth saw and was shaken.

 

5 The mountains melted like wax before the face of the Lord, before the face of the Lord of all the earth.

 

6 The heavens declared his righteousness, and all the peoples saw his glory.

 

7 Let all who worship carved images be put to shame, those who boast in their idols; worship him, all his angels.

 

8 Zion heard and was glad, and the daughters of Judea rejoiced because of your judgments, O Lord;

 

9 for you are the Lord, the Most High over all the earth; you have been exceedingly exalted above all the gods.

 

10 You who love the Lord, hate evil; the Lord guards the souls of his holy ones; from the hand of sinners he will deliver them.

 

11 Light has risen for the righteous, and gladness for the upright in heart.

 

12 Rejoice, you righteous, in the Lord, and give thanks to the memorial of his holiness. 

 

Psalm 97

 

1 A Psalm of David. Sing to the Lord a new song, for the Lord has done marvelous things; his right hand and his holy arm have saved him.

 

2 The Lord has made known his salvation; before the nations he has revealed his righteousness.

 

3 He has remembered his mercy to Jacob and his truth to the house of Israel; all the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God.

 

4 Shout to God, all the earth; sing and rejoice and make music.

 

5 Make music to the Lord with the lyre, with the lyre and the voice of a psalm;

 

6 with hammered trumpets and the sound of the horn trumpet shout before the King, the Lord.

 

7 Let the sea be shaken, and its fullness, the world and those who dwell in it.

 

8 The rivers will clap their hands together; the mountains will rejoice,

 

9 for he has come to judge the earth; he will judge the world in righteousness and the peoples in uprightness. 

 

Psalm 98

 

1 A Psalm of David. The Lord reigns; let the peoples rage: he who sits upon the cherubim; let the earth be shaken.

 

2 The Lord is great in Zion, and exalted above all the peoples.

 

3 Let them give thanks to your great name, for it is fearful and holy.

 

4 And the honor of a king loves judgment; you have prepared equity; judgment and righteousness you have wrought in Jacob.

 

5 Exalt the Lord our God, and worship at his footstool, for he is holy.

 

6 Moses and Aaron were among his priests, and Samuel among those who call upon his name; they called upon the Lord, and he heard them.

 

7 He spoke to them in a pillar of cloud; they kept his testimonies and the ordinances which he gave them.

 

8 O Lord our God, you heard them; O God, you were merciful to them, yet taking vengeance on all their practices.

 

9 Exalt the Lord our God, and worship at his holy mountain, for the Lord our God is holy. 

 

Psalm 99

 

1 A Psalm of thanksgiving. Shout with joy to the Lord, all the earth;

 

2 serve the Lord with gladness; come before him with rejoicing.

 

3 Know that the Lord, he is God; he made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people and the sheep of his pasture.

 

4 Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with hymns; give thanks to him, praise his name,

 

5 for the Lord is good; his mercy endures forever, and his truth to generation after generation. 

 

Psalm 100

 

1 A Psalm of David. Of mercy and judgment I will sing to you, O Lord;

 

2 I will sing praises and give heed in a blameless way: when will you come to me? I walked in the innocence of my heart in the midst of my house.

 

3 I set no lawless thing before my eyes; I hated those who commit transgressions.

 

4 A crooked heart did not cling to me; when the evil one turned away from me, I did not know him.

 

5 The one who secretly slanders his neighbor, him I drove out; with the man of proud eye and insatiable heart, with him I would not eat.

 

6 My eyes were upon the faithful of the land, that they might sit with me; he who walked in a blameless way, he ministered to me.

 

7 No one who practices arrogance dwelt in the midst of my house; the speaker of unjust things did not prosper before my eyes.

 

8 In the mornings I slew all the sinners of the land, to destroy from the city of the Lord all who work lawlessness. 

 

Psalm 101

 

1 A prayer of the poor man, when he is weary and pours out his supplication before the Lord.

 

2 Hear my prayer, O Lord, and let my cry come to you.

 

3 Do not turn your face away from me; on whatever day I am afflicted, incline your ear to me; on whatever day I call upon you, hear me quickly.

 

4 For my days have vanished like smoke, and my bones have been parched like a dry stick.

 

5 My heart was struck like grass and withered, for I forgot to eat my bread.

 

6 From the sound of my groaning, my bone has clung to my flesh.

 

7 I have become like a pelican of the wilderness; I have become like an owl among ruins.

 

8 I have kept watch and become like a solitary sparrow on a housetop.

 

9 All day long my enemies reproached me, and those who praised me swore against me.

 

10 For I have eaten ashes like bread, and mingled my drink with weeping,

 

11 because of your anger and your wrath, for having lifted me up you cast me down.

 

12 My days have declined like a shadow, and I have withered like grass.

14 You will arise and have compassion on Zion, for it is time to have compassion on her, for the appointed time has come;

 

15 for your servants have taken pleasure in her stones, and they will have compassion on her dust.

 

16 And the nations shall fear the name of the Lord, and all the kings of the earth your glory,

 

17 for the Lord will build up Zion and will be seen in his glory.

 

18 He has regarded the prayer of the lowly and has not despised their supplication.

 

19 Let this be written for another generation, and the people being created will praise the Lord,

 

20 for he looked down from his holy height; the Lord looked from heaven upon the earth,

 

21 to hear the groaning of those in fetters, to release the sons of those put to death,

 

22 to declare in Zion the name of the Lord and his praise in Jerusalem,

 

23 when peoples are gathered together, and kingdoms, to serve the Lord.

 

24 He answered him in the way of his strength: Declare to me the fewness of my days;

 

25 do not take me away in the midst of my days, your years are through all generations.

 

26 In the beginning you, O Lord, founded the earth, and the heavens are the works of your hands;

 

27 they will perish, but you will endure, and all of them will grow old like a garment, and like a cloak you will change them, and they will be changed;

 

28 but you are the same, and your years will not fail.

 

29 The sons of your servants will dwell securely, and their offspring will be established forever. 

 

Psalm 102

 

1 Of David. Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name.

 

2 Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his recompenses:

 

3 who is merciful to all your iniquities, who heals all your diseases,

 

4 who redeems your life from corruption, who crowns you with mercy and compassion,

 

5 who satisfies your desire with good things; your youth shall be renewed like the eagle's.

 

6 The Lord performs deeds of mercy and judgment for all who are wronged.

 

7 He made known his ways to Moses, his wishes to the children of Israel.

 

8 The Lord is compassionate and merciful, long-suffering and abounding in mercy.

 

9 He will not be angry to the end, nor will he keep his wrath forever.

 

10 He has not dealt with us according to our sins, nor repaid us according to our iniquities.

 

11 For as the height of heaven is above the earth, so has the Lord strengthened his mercy toward those who fear him.

 

12 As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our iniquities from us.

 

13 As a father has compassion on his sons, so the Lord has had compassion on those who fear him.

 

14 For he knows our frame; remember that we are dust.

 

15 As for man, his days are like grass; like a flower of the field, so shall he bloom.

 

16 For a wind passes over it, and it shall be no more, and it shall know its place no longer.

 

17 But the mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting upon those who fear him, and his righteousness upon children's children,

 

18 to those who keep his covenant and remember his commandments to do them.

 

19 The Lord has prepared his throne in heaven, and his kingdom rules over all.

1 Of David. Bless the Lord, O my soul. O Lord my God, you have been greatly magnified; you have clothed yourself with praise and majesty,

 

2 wrapping yourself in light as in a garment, stretching out the heaven like a skin;

 

3 who covers his upper chambers with waters, who makes clouds his stepping-place, who walks upon the wings of the winds;

 

4 who makes his angels spirits and his ministers a flaming fire.

 

5 He founded the earth upon its firm foundation; it shall not be moved forever and ever.

 

6 The deep, like a garment, is his covering; upon the mountains shall the waters stand.

 

7 At your rebuke they shall flee; at the voice of your thunder they shall be terrified.

 

8 The mountains rise up and the plains sink down to the place which you founded for them.

16 The trees of the plain shall be satisfied, the cedars of Lebanon which he planted;

 

17 there the sparrows shall build their nests; the house of the heron leads them.

 

18 The high mountains are for the deer; the rock is a refuge for the rock-badgers.

 

19 He made the moon for seasons; the sun knew its setting.

 

20 You appointed darkness, and it became night; in it all the beasts of the forest shall pass through,

 

21 young lions roaring to seize and to seek their food from God.

 

22 The sun rose, and they gathered together, and in their dens they shall lie down.

 

23 Man shall go forth to his work and to his labor until evening.

 

24 How great are your works, O Lord! In wisdom you made them all; the earth is filled with your possession.

 

25 This is the sea, great and wide; there are creeping things without number, living creatures small with great.

 

26 There ships pass through; this dragon, whom you formed to play in it.

 

27 All things look to you, to give them their food in due season.

 

28 When you give it to them, they shall gather; when you open your hand, all things shall be filled with goodness.

 

29 But when you turn away your face, they shall be troubled; you will take away their spirit, and they shall fail and return to their dust.

 

30 You will send forth your spirit, and they shall be created, and you will renew the face of the earth.

 

31 Let the glory of the Lord be forever; the Lord shall rejoice in his works;

33 I will sing to the Lord in my life; I will sing praises to my God while I have being.

 

34 May my meditation be pleasing to him, and I shall rejoice in the Lord.

Psalm 104

 

1 Alleluia. Give thanks to the Lord and call upon his name; declare his works among the nations.

 

2 Sing to him and make music to him; recount all his wonderful deeds.

 

3 Glory in his holy name; let the heart of those who seek the Lord rejoice.

 

4 Seek the Lord and be strengthened; seek his face continually.

 

5 Remember his wonderful deeds which he has done, his wonders and the judgments of his mouth,

40 They asked, and the quail came, and he satisfied them with the bread of heaven.

1 Alleluia. Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his mercy endures forever.

 

2 Who shall tell the mighty acts of the Lord, who shall make all his praises heard?

 

3 Blessed are those who keep judgment and do righteousness at every time.

 

4 Remember us, O Lord, in the favor of your people; visit us with your salvation,

 

5 that we may see the goodness of your chosen ones, that we may rejoice in the gladness of your nation, that we may glory with your inheritance.

20 And they exchanged their glory for the likeness of a calf that eats grass.

 

21 They forgot God who saved them, who did great things in Egypt,

 

22 wonders in the land of Ham, fearful things at the Red Sea.

 

23 And he said he would destroy them, had not Moses his chosen one stood in the breach before him, to turn away his wrath, lest he destroy them.

 

24 And they despised the desirable land; they did not believe his word.

 

25 And they murmured in their tents; they did not listen to the voice of the Lord.

 

26 And he lifted up his hand against them, to cast them down in the wilderness,

 

27 and to cast down their seed among the nations, and to scatter them in the lands.

 

28 And they were initiated to Baal of Peor, and ate the sacrifices of the dead.

 

29 And they provoked him with their practices, and the plague multiplied among them.

 

30 And Phinehas stood and made atonement, and the plague ceased.

 

31 And it was counted to him for righteousness, to generation after generation, forever.

 

32 And they angered him at the water of contention, and Moses suffered harm on their account,

 

33 because they embittered his spirit, and he spoke rashly with his lips.

 

34 They did not destroy the nations, which the Lord had told them,

 

35 but were mingled among the nations and learned their works.

 

36 And they served their carved images, and it became a stumbling block to them.

 

37 And they sacrificed their sons and their daughters to demons,

 

38 and shed innocent blood, the blood of their sons and daughters, whom they sacrificed to the carved images of Canaan, and the land was defiled with blood-guilt,

 

39 and was polluted by their works, and they went whoring in their practices.

 

40 And the Lord was angered with fury against his people, and abhorred his inheritance.

 

41 And he delivered them into the hands of nations, and those who hated them ruled over them.

 

42 And their enemies oppressed them, and they were humbled under their hands.

 

43 Many times he delivered them, but they embittered him by their counsel, and were brought low in their iniquities.

 

44 And he saw when they were oppressed, when he heard their supplication.

 

45 And he remembered his covenant, and relented according to the multitude of his mercy.

 

46 And he gave them into compassion before all who had taken them captive.

 

47 Save us, O Lord our God, and gather us from among the nations, that we may give thanks to your holy name, that we may glory in your praise.

 

48 Blessed be the Lord God of Israel from everlasting to everlasting. And all the people shall say: Amen, amen. 

 

Psalm 106

 

1 Alleluia. Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his mercy endures forever.

 

2 Let those redeemed by the Lord say so, whom he redeemed from the hand of the enemy.

 

3 He gathered them out of the lands, from the east and the west and the north and the sea.

 

4 They wandered in the wilderness, in a waterless place; they found no way to a city of habitation,

 

5 hungering and thirsting; their soul fainted within them.

 

6 And they cried out to the Lord in their affliction, and he delivered them out of their distresses,

 

7 and he led them by a straight way, to go to a city of habitation.

17 He helped them out of the way of their lawlessness, for because of their lawless deeds they were brought low.

20 he sent his word and healed them, and delivered them from their corruptions.

 

21 Let them give thanks to the Lord for his mercies and for his wonders to the sons of men,

 

22 and let them offer a sacrifice of praise, and proclaim his works with rejoicing.

 

23 Those who go down to the sea in ships, doing business in many waters,

 

24 they saw the works of the Lord and his wonders in the deep.

 

25 He spoke, and the storm wind arose, and its waves were lifted high.

 

26 They mount up to the heavens and go down to the depths; their soul melted away in troubles.

 

27 They were troubled, they staggered like a drunken man, and all their wisdom was swallowed up.

 

28 And they cried out to the Lord in their affliction, and he brought them out of their distresses,

 

29 and he commanded the storm, and it was stilled to a breeze, and its waves were silent.

 

30 And they rejoiced, because they were at rest, and he guided them to the haven of their desire.

 

31 Let them give thanks to the Lord for his mercies and for his wonders to the sons of men;

 

32 let them exalt him in the assembly of the people, and praise him in the seat of the elders.

 

33 He turned rivers into a wilderness, and springs of waters into thirsty ground,

 

34 a fruitful land into a salt waste, because of the wickedness of those dwelling in it.

 

35 He turned the wilderness into pools of water, and a waterless land into springs of waters,

 

36 and there he settled the hungry, and they established a city of habitation,

 

37 and they sowed fields and planted vineyards, and produced fruit of increase.

 

38 And he blessed them, and they multiplied greatly, and he did not let their cattle diminish.

 

39 And they were diminished and afflicted by the oppression of evils and sorrow.

 

40 Contempt was poured out upon rulers, and he made them wander in a trackless place where there was no way.

 

41 And he helped the needy out of poverty, and made families like flocks of sheep.

 

42 The upright will see it and rejoice, and all lawlessness will stop its mouth.

 

43 Who is wise and will keep these things, and they will understand the mercies of the Lord? 

 

Psalm 107

 

1 A Song of a Psalm of David.

 

2 My heart is ready, O God, my heart is ready; I will sing and make melody in my glory.

 

3 Awake, psaltery and harp; I will awake at dawn.

 

4 I will give thanks to you among the peoples, O Lord, and I will sing to you among the nations,

 

5 for your mercy is great above the heavens, and your truth reaches to the clouds.

 

6 Be exalted above the heavens, O God, and your glory over all the earth.

 

7 That your beloved ones may be delivered, save with your right hand and hear me.

 

8 God has spoken in his holy place: I will be exalted, and I will divide Shechem, and I will measure out the valley of tents.

 

9 Gilead is mine, and Manasseh is mine, and Ephraim is the support of my head; Judah is my king.

 

10 Moab is the cauldron of my hope; upon Idumea I will stretch out my sandal; to me the foreigners have been subjected.

 

11 Who will lead me away into the fortified city? Who will guide me as far as Idumea?

 

12 Will you not, O God, who have rejected us? And will you not go forth, O God, with our armies?

 

13 Give us help out of affliction; for vain is the salvation of man.

 

14 In God we shall do valiantly, and he will bring our enemies to nothing. 

 

Psalm 108

 

1 To the end; a psalm of David. O God, do not pass over my praise in silence,

 

2 for the mouth of the sinner and the mouth of the deceitful man have been opened against me; they have spoken against me with a deceitful tongue,

 

3 and with words of hatred they have surrounded me and made war on me without cause.

 

4 In return for my love they slandered me, but I kept praying;

 

5 and they repaid me evil for good, and hatred for my love.

 

6 Set a sinner over him, and let an accuser stand at his right hand;

 

7 when he is judged, may he go forth condemned, and let his prayer become sin.

 

8 Let his days be few, and may another take his office;

 

9 let his sons become orphans and his wife a widow;

 

10 let his sons wander, unsettled, and beg; let them be cast out of their dwellings.

 

11 Let the creditor search out all that he has; let strangers plunder his labors;

14 May the lawlessness of his fathers be remembered before the Lord, and may the sin of his mother not be blotted out;

16 because he did not remember to show mercy, but pursued a poor and needy man, one pierced in heart, to put him to death.

 

17 He loved cursing, and it shall come upon him; he did not desire blessing, and it shall be far from him.

 

18 He clothed himself with cursing as with a garment, and it entered like water into his inward parts and like oil into his bones;

 

19 let it be to him like a garment which he wraps around himself, and like a belt which he girds on continually.

 

20 This is the recompense from the Lord of those who slander me, and of those who speak evil against my soul.

 

21 But you, O Lord, Lord, deal mercifully with me for your name's sake, for your mercy is kind.

 

22 Deliver me, for I am poor and needy, and my heart is troubled within me.

 

23 Like a shadow when it declines I have been taken away; I have been shaken off like locusts.

 

24 My knees have grown weak from fasting, and my flesh has been changed for lack of oil.

 

25 And I have become a reproach to them; they saw me and shook their heads.

Psalm 109

 

1 A Psalm of David. The Lord said to my Lord, "Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet."

 

2 The Lord will send forth the rod of your power from Zion; rule in the midst of your enemies.

 

3 With you is dominion in the day of your power, in the splendors of the holy ones; from the womb, before the morning star, I begot you.

 

4 The Lord has sworn and will not repent: "You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek."

 

5 The Lord at your right hand has shattered kings in the day of his wrath;

 

6 he will judge among the nations, he will fill them with corpses, he will shatter the heads of many upon the earth.

 

7 He will drink from the brook by the way; therefore he will lift up his head. 

 

Psalm 110

 

1 Alleluia. I will give thanks to you, O Lord, with my whole heart, in the council of the upright and in the congregation.

 

2 Great are the works of the Lord, sought out according to all his purposes;

 

3 thanksgiving and majesty are his work, and his righteousness endures for ever and ever.

 

4 He has made a memorial of his wonders; merciful and compassionate is the Lord;

 

5 he has given food to those who fear him; he will remember his covenant for ever.

 

6 He has declared to his people the power of his works, to give them the inheritance of the nations.

 

7 The works of his hands are truth and judgment; all his commandments are faithful,

Psalm 111

 

 1 Alleluia. Blessed is the man who fears the Lord; in his commandments he shall delight greatly.

 

2 His seed shall be mighty upon the earth; the generation of the upright shall be blessed.

 

3 Glory and wealth shall be in his house, and his righteousness endures forever and ever.

 

4 Light has risen in the darkness for the upright: he is merciful and compassionate and righteous.

 

5 Good is the man who is compassionate and lends; he will order his words with judgment;

 

6 for he shall never be shaken; the righteous shall be in everlasting remembrance.

 

7 He shall not fear an evil report; his heart is ready to hope in the Lord.

Psalm 112

 

1 Alleluia. Praise, servants, the Lord, praise the name of the Lord;

3 from the rising of the sun unto its setting, praise the name of the Lord.

 

4 High above all nations is the Lord, above the heavens is his glory.

 

5 Who is like the Lord our God, who dwells on high,

7 He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the dunghill,

16 May those who make them become like them, and all who trust in them.

24 The heaven of heaven belongs to the Lord, but the earth he has given to the sons of men.

 

25 The dead shall not praise you, O Lord, nor any who go down into Hades,

17 I shall not die, but I shall live and recount the works of the Lord.

3 What shall be given to you, and what shall be added to you, against a deceitful tongue?

 

4 The arrows of the mighty one, sharpened, with coals of the desert.

 

5 Woe is me, that my sojourning is prolonged; I have dwelt among the tents of Kedar.

 

6 Long has my soul sojourned.

 

7 With those who hate peace I was peaceful; when I spoke to them, they made war on me without cause. 

 

Psalm 120

 

1 A Song of Ascents. I lifted up my eyes to the mountains: from where will my help come?

 

2 My help is from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.

 

3 May he not let your foot be moved, nor may he who keeps you slumber.

 

4 Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

 

5 The Lord will keep you; the Lord is your shelter at your right hand.

 

6 By day the sun will not scorch you, nor the moon by night.

 

7 The Lord will keep you from all evil; he will keep your soul.

 

8 The Lord will keep your coming in and your going out, from this time forth and forevermore. 

 

Psalm 121

 

1 A Song of Ascents. I was glad when they said to me, "We shall go to the house of the Lord."

 

2 Our feet were standing in your courts, O Jerusalem.

 

3 Jerusalem, built as a city whose fellowship is united together.

 

4 For there the tribes went up, the tribes of the Lord, a testimony for Israel, to give thanks to the name of the Lord;

 

5 for there thrones were set for judgment, thrones over the house of David.

 

6 Pray, ask for the things that make for the peace of Jerusalem, and may there be prosperity for those who love you;

 

7 let there be peace within your strength and prosperity within your towers.

 

8 For the sake of my brothers and my neighbors I spoke peace concerning you;

 

9 for the sake of the house of the Lord our God I have sought good things for you. 

 

Psalm 122

 

1 A Song of Ascents. To you I have lifted up my eyes, you who dwell in heaven.

 

2 Behold, as the eyes of slaves look to the hands of their masters, as the eyes of a maidservant to the hands of her mistress, so our eyes look to the Lord our God, until he shows us mercy.

 

3 Have mercy on us, Lord, have mercy on us, for we have been filled full with contempt;

 

4 our soul has been filled more than enough. Let the reproach be to those who prosper, and the contempt to the proud. 

 

Psalm 123

 

1 A Song of Ascents. If the Lord had not been with us, let Israel now say,

 

2 if the Lord had not been with us when men rose up against us,

 

3 then they would have swallowed us alive, when their wrath was kindled against us;

 

4 then the water would have drowned us, our soul would have passed through the torrent;

 

5 then our soul would have passed through the overwhelming water.

 

6 Blessed be the Lord, who did not give us as prey to their teeth.

 

7 Our soul has been delivered like a sparrow from the snare of the hunters; the snare was broken, and we were delivered.

 

8 Our help is in the name of the Lord, who made heaven and earth. 

 

Psalm 124

 

1 A Song of Ascents. Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion; he who dwells in Jerusalem shall not be shaken forever.

 

2 Mountains are around her, and the Lord is around his people, from now and forevermore.

 

3 For he will not leave the rod of sinners upon the lot of the righteous, lest the righteous stretch out their hands in lawlessness.

 

4 Do good, O Lord, to the good and to the upright in heart;

 

5 but those who turn aside into crooked ways the Lord will lead away with the workers of lawlessness. Peace be upon Israel. 

 

Psalm 125

 

1 A Song of Ascents. When the Lord turned back the captivity of Zion, we became as those who are comforted.

 

2 Then our mouth was filled with joy, and our tongue with rejoicing. Then they will say among the nations, "The Lord has done great things with them."

 

3 The Lord has done great things with us; we became glad.

 

4 Turn back our captivity, O Lord, like torrents in the south.

 

5 Those who sow in tears shall reap in rejoicing.

 

6 They went on their way and wept, carrying their seed; but they shall come back with rejoicing, carrying their sheaves. 

 

Psalm 126

 

1 A Song of Ascents; for Solomon. Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it have labored in vain; unless the Lord guards the city, the watchman has kept watch in vain.

 

2 It is in vain for you to rise early, to get up after sitting down, you who eat the bread of sorrow, when he gives sleep to his beloved.

 

3 Behold, sons are the inheritance of the Lord, the reward of the fruit of the womb.

 

4 Like arrows in the hand of a mighty man, so are the sons of those who were cast out.

 

5 Blessed is the man who will fulfill his desire with them; they shall not be put to shame when they speak with their enemies in the gate. 

 

Psalm 127

 

1 A Song of Ascents. Blessed are all who fear the Lord, who walk in his ways.

 

2 You shall eat the fruits of your labors; blessed are you, and it shall be well with you.

 

3 Your wife shall be like a flourishing vine on the sides of your house; your sons like newly planted olive trees around your table.

 

4 Behold, thus shall the man be blessed who fears the Lord.

 

5 May the Lord bless you from Zion, and may you see the good things of Jerusalem all the days of your life;

 

6 and may you see your children's children. Peace be upon Israel. 

 

Psalm 128

 

1 A Song of Ascents. Many times have they warred against me from my youth, let Israel now say,

 

2 many times have they warred against me from my youth, and yet they have not prevailed against me.

 

3 Upon my back the sinners wrought; they prolonged their lawlessness.

 

4 The Lord is righteous; he has cut asunder the necks of sinners.

 

5 Let all who hate Zion be put to shame and turned back.

 

6 Let them become like the grass of the housetops, which withers before it is plucked up,

 

7 with which the reaper does not fill his hand, nor he who gathers the sheaves his bosom,

 

8 and those passing by have not said, "The blessing of the Lord be upon you; we have blessed you in the name of the Lord." 

 

Psalm 129

 

1 A Song of Ascents. Out of the depths I have cried to you, O Lord;

 

2 Lord, hear my voice; let your ears be attentive to the voice of my supplication.

 

3 If you should mark iniquities, O Lord, Lord, who shall stand?

 

4 For with you there is forgiveness.

 

5 For the sake of your law I have waited for you, O Lord; my soul has waited for your word.

 

6 My soul has hoped in the Lord from the morning watch until night; from the morning watch let Israel hope in the Lord.

 

7 For with the Lord there is mercy, and with him is abundant redemption,

 

8 and he shall redeem Israel from all his iniquities. 

 

Psalm 130

 

1 A Song of Ascents; of David. Lord, my heart is not lifted up, nor are my eyes raised too high, nor have I walked among things too great or too wondrous for me.

 

2 If I were not humble-minded, but exalted my soul, as a weaned child upon its mother, so let recompense be upon my soul.

 

3 Let Israel hope in the Lord from now and forever. 

 

Psalm 131

 

1 A Song of Ascents. Remember, O Lord, David and all his meekness,

 

2 how he swore to the Lord, vowed to the God of Jacob:

 

3 "I will not enter the dwelling of my house, nor go up onto the bed of my couch,

 

4 nor give sleep to my eyes, nor slumber to my eyelids, nor rest to my temples,

 

5 until I find a place for the Lord, a dwelling for the God of Jacob."

 

6 Behold, we heard of it in Ephrathah; we found it in the fields of the forest.

 

7 Let us enter his dwellings; let us worship at the place where his feet have stood.

 

8 Arise, O Lord, into your rest, you and the ark of your holiness.

 

9 Your priests shall clothe themselves with righteousness, and your holy ones shall rejoice.

 

10 For the sake of David your servant, do not turn away the face of your anointed.

 

11 The Lord swore truth to David, and he will by no means annul it: "Of the fruit of your body I will set one upon your throne.

 

12 If your sons keep my covenant and these my testimonies which I shall teach them, their sons also shall sit upon your throne forever."

 

13 For the Lord has chosen Zion; he has chosen it for a habitation for himself:

 

14 "This is my resting place forever and ever; here will I dwell, for I have chosen it.

 

15 I will surely bless its provision; I will satisfy its poor with bread.

 

16 Its priests I will clothe with salvation, and its holy ones shall rejoice with rejoicing.

 

17 There I will cause a horn to spring up for David; I have prepared a lamp for my anointed.

 

18 His enemies I will clothe with shame, but upon him my holiness shall flourish." 

 

Psalm 132

 

1 A Song of Ascents; of David. Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brothers to dwell together in unity!

 

2 It is like the precious oil upon the head, running down upon the beard, the beard of Aaron, running down upon the collar of his robes!

 

3 It is like the dew of Hermon, which descends upon the mountains of Zion! For there the LORD commanded the blessing, life forevermore. 

 

Psalm 133

 

1 A Song of Ascents. Behold, bless the Lord, all you servants of the Lord who stand in the house of the Lord, in the courts of the house of our God.

 

2 Lift up your hands in the nights to the holy place and bless the Lord.

 

3 May the Lord bless you from Zion, he who made heaven and earth. 

 

Psalm 134

 

1 Alleluia. Praise the name of the Lord; praise the Lord, you servants,

 

2 you who stand in the house of the Lord, in the courts of the house of our God.

 

3 Praise the Lord, for the Lord is good; sing praises to his name, for it is beautiful;

 

4 for the Lord chose Jacob for himself, Israel for his own possession.

15 The idols of the nations are silver and gold, the works of men's hands:

 

16 they have a mouth, but they will not speak; they have eyes, but they will not see;

 

17 they have ears, but they will not hear; they have noses, but they will not smell; they have hands, but they will not feel; they have feet, but they will not walk; they will make no sound in their throat, for there is no breath in their mouth.

 

18 May those who make them become like them, and all who trust in them.

 

19 O house of Israel, bless the Lord; O house of Aaron, bless the Lord;

 

20 O house of Levi, bless the Lord; you who fear the Lord, bless the Lord.

26 Give thanks to the God of heaven, for his mercy endures forever; give thanks to the Lord of lords, for his mercy endures forever. 

 

Psalm 136

 

1 Of David. By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down and wept when we remembered Zion.

 

2 Upon the willows in the midst of it we hung our instruments;

 

3 for there those who had taken us captive asked of us words of songs, and those who had led us away asked for a hymn: "Sing to us from the songs of Zion."

 

4 How shall we sing the song of the Lord in a foreign land?

 

5 If I forget you, Jerusalem, may my right hand be forgotten;

 

6 may my tongue cling to my throat, if I do not remember you, if I do not set Jerusalem first at the beginning of my joy.

 

7 Remember, Lord, the sons of Edom on the day of Jerusalem, who said, "Lay it bare, lay it bare, down to its foundation."

 

8 Daughter of Babylon, the wretched one, blessed is he who will repay you your recompense, which you repaid to us;

 

9 blessed is he who will seize and dash your infants against the rock. 

 

Psalm 137

 

1 Of David. I will give thanks to you, Lord, with my whole heart, for you have heard the words of my mouth, and before angels I will sing praise to you.

 

2 I will worship toward your holy temple and give thanks to your name for your mercy and your truth, for you have magnified your word above every name.

 

3 On whatever day I call upon you, hear me quickly; you will care greatly for me in my soul with power.

 

4 Let all the kings of the earth give thanks to you, Lord, for they have heard all the words of your mouth,

 

5 and let them sing in the ways of the Lord, for great is the glory of the Lord,

 

6 for the Lord is exalted, and he looks upon the lowly, and the lofty he knows from afar.

 

7 If I walk in the midst of affliction, you will give me life; against the wrath of my enemies you stretched out your hand, and your right hand saved me.

 

8 The Lord will repay on my behalf. Lord, your mercy endures forever; do not forsake the works of your hands. 

 

Psalm 138

 

1 For the end; a psalm of David. Lord, you have tested me and known me;

 

2 you know my sitting down and my rising up, you understand my thoughts from afar;

 

3 you have traced out my path and my measuring line, and you foresaw all my ways.

 

4 For there is no word on my tongue,

 

5 behold, Lord, you have known all things, the last and the first; you formed me and laid your hand upon me.

 

6 Your knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is too strong, I cannot attain to it.

 

7 Where shall I go from your spirit, and where shall I flee from your face?

 

8 If I ascend into heaven, you are there; if I go down to Hades, you are present;

 

9 if I should take up my wings toward the dawn and dwell at the farthest parts of the sea,

 

10 even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me.

 

11 And I said, Surely darkness will trample me down, and night will be light in my luxury;

 

12 for darkness will not be dark to you, and night shall be as bright as day; as is its darkness, so also is its light.

 

13 For you possessed my inward parts, Lord; you took hold of me from my mother's womb.

15 My bone, which you made in secret, was not hidden from you, nor my substance in the lowest parts of the earth;

 

16 your eyes saw my unformed substance, and in your book all shall be written; by day they shall be formed, though not one of them yet exists.

 

17 But to me your friends have been greatly honored, O God; their dominions have been greatly strengthened;

 

18 I will count them, and they shall be multiplied beyond the sand; I awoke, and I am still with you.

 

19 If only you would slay sinners, O God, you men of blood, depart from me.

 

20 For you will say concerning their thoughts: they shall take your cities in vain.

 

21 Have I not hated those who hate you, Lord, and wasted away over your enemies?

 

22 I hated them with perfect hatred; they became enemies to me.

 

23 Test me, O God, and know my heart; examine me and know my paths,

 

24 and see if there is a way of lawlessness in me, and lead me in an everlasting way. 

 

Psalm 139

 

1 To the end; a psalm of David.

 

2 Deliver me, O Lord, from the evil man; rescue me from the unjust man,

 

3 who have devised injustices in their heart; all day long they arrayed themselves for wars.

 

4 They sharpened their tongue like a serpent's; the venom of asps is under their lips. Pause.

 

5 Keep me, O Lord, from the hand of the sinner; deliver me from unjust men, who have devised to trip up my steps.

 

6 The proud have hidden a snare for me, and stretched out cords as snares for my feet; alongside the path they set a stumbling block for me. Pause.

 

7 I said to the Lord: You are my God; give ear, O Lord, to the voice of my supplication.

 

8 O Lord, Lord, the strength of my salvation, you have overshadowed my head in the day of battle.

 

9 Do not deliver me over, O Lord, from my desire to the sinner; they have plotted against me; do not forsake me, lest they be exalted. Pause.

 

10 As for the head of those who encircle me, the toil of their lips shall cover them.

 

11 Coals shall fall upon them; you shall cast them down into fire; in miseries they shall not stand.

 

12 A talkative man shall not prosper upon the earth; evils shall hunt the unjust man to destruction.

 

13 I know that the Lord will execute judgment for the poor and justice for the needy.

 

14 Surely the righteous shall give thanks to your name, and the upright shall dwell in your presence. 

 

Psalm 140

 

1 A Psalm of David. Lord, I have cried out to you, hear me; attend to the voice of my supplication when I cry to you.

 

2 Let my prayer be set forth as incense before you, the lifting up of my hands as an evening sacrifice.

 

3 Set, O Lord, a guard over my mouth, and a door of enclosure about my lips.

 

4 Do not incline my heart to words of wickedness, to make excuses with excuses in sins, together with men who work lawlessness; and let me not join with their chosen ones.

 

5 A righteous man shall chasten me in mercy and reprove me, but let not the oil of a sinner anoint my head; for still my prayer also is against their pleasures.

 

6 Their judges have been swallowed up beside the rock; they shall hear my words, for they were sweet.

 

7 As a clod of earth is broken upon the ground, our bones have been scattered beside Hades.

 

8 For to you, Lord, Lord, are my eyes; in you I have hoped—do not take away my soul.

 

9 Keep me from the snare which they have set for me, and from the stumbling blocks of those who work lawlessness.

 

10 Sinners shall fall into his net; I am alone until I pass by. 

 

Psalm 141

 

1 A psalm of understanding of David, when he was in the cave; a prayer.

 

2 With my voice I cried out to the Lord; with my voice I made supplication to the Lord.

 

3 I will pour out my supplication before him; I will declare my affliction in his presence.

 

4 When my spirit was failing within me, you also knew my paths; in this way in which I walked, they hid a snare for me.

 

5 I looked to the right hand and observed, for there was no one who recognized me; refuge perished from me, and there is no one who seeks my soul.

 

6 I cried out to you, O Lord; I said, You are my hope, my portion in the land of the living.

 

7 Attend to my supplication, for I have been brought very low; deliver me from those who pursue me, for they have grown stronger than I.

 

8 Bring my soul out of prison, that I may give thanks to your name, O Lord; the righteous will wait for me until you reward me. 

 

Psalm 142

 

1 A Psalm of David, when his son pursued him. O Lord, hear my prayer, give ear to my supplication in your truth; answer me in your righteousness.

 

2 And do not enter into judgment with your servant, for no one living shall be justified before you.

 

3 For the enemy has pursued my soul; he has humbled my life to the ground; he has made me sit in dark places like the dead of ages past.

 

4 And my spirit grew despondent within me; my heart was troubled within me.

 

5 I remembered the days of old, and I meditated on all your works; I meditated on the works of your hands.

 

6 I spread out my hands to you; my soul is toward you like a waterless land. Pause.

 

7 Hear me quickly, O Lord; my spirit has failed. Do not turn your face away from me, or I shall be like those who go down into the pit.

 

8 Make me hear your mercy in the morning, for in you I have hoped. Make known to me, O Lord, the way in which I should walk, for to you I have lifted up my soul.

 

9 Deliver me from my enemies, O Lord, for to you I have fled for refuge.

 

10 Teach me to do your will, for you are my God. Your good spirit shall guide me in a level land.

 

11 For your name's sake, O Lord, you shall preserve me alive; in your righteousness you shall bring my soul out of affliction.

 

12 And in your mercy you shall utterly destroy my enemies, and you shall destroy all those who afflict my soul; for I am your servant. 

 

Psalm 143

 

1 Of David, concerning Goliath. Blessed be the Lord my God, who trains my hands for battle, my fingers for war;

 

2 my mercy and my refuge, my helper and my deliverer, my defender, and in him I have hoped, who subdues my people under me.

 

3 Lord, what is man, that you made yourself known to him, or the son of man, that you take account of him?

 

4 Man is like vanity; his days pass away like a shadow.

 

5 Lord, bow your heavens and come down; touch the mountains, and they will smoke.

 

6 Flash forth lightning, and you will scatter them; send out your arrows, and you will throw them into confusion.

 

7 Send out your hand from on high; rescue me and deliver me from many waters, from the hand of the sons of strangers,

 

8 whose mouth has spoken vanity, and whose right hand is a right hand of injustice.

 

9 O God, I will sing a new song to you; on a ten-stringed harp I will play to you,

 

10 who gives salvation to kings, who redeems David his servant from the evil sword.

 

11 Deliver me and rescue me from the hand of the sons of strangers, whose mouth has spoken vanity, and whose right hand is a right hand of injustice;

 

12 whose sons are like young plants firmly rooted in their youth; their daughters adorned, decorated like the likeness of a temple;

 

13 their storehouses full, overflowing from one to another; their sheep prolific, multiplying in their goings out;

 

14 their oxen fat; there is no breach in the wall, nor passage out, nor cry in their streets.

 

15 They called the people blessed who have these things; blessed is the people whose God is the Lord. 

 

Psalm 144

 

1 A praise of David. I will exalt you, my God, my King, and I will bless your name forever and ever.

 

2 Every day I will bless you and praise your name forever and ever.

 

3 Great is the Lord and greatly to be praised, and of his greatness there is no end.

 

4 Generation after generation shall praise your works, and they shall declare your power.

 

5 They shall speak of the magnificence of the glory of your holiness, and they shall recount your wonders.

 

6 And they shall tell of the power of your fearful deeds, and they shall recount your greatness.

 

7 They shall pour forth the memory of the abundance of your goodness, and they shall rejoice in your righteousness.

 

8 Compassionate and merciful is the Lord, patient and abounding in mercy.

 

9 The Lord is good to all, and his compassions are over all his works.

 

10 Let all your works give thanks to you, O Lord, and let your holy ones bless you.

 

11 They shall tell of the glory of your kingdom and speak of your dominion,

 

12 to make known to the sons of men your dominion and the glory of the magnificence of your kingdom.

 

13 Your kingdom is a kingdom of all ages, and your dominion endures in every generation and generation.

 

13a Faithful is the Lord in his words and holy in all his works.

 

14 The Lord upholds all who are falling and sets upright all who are cast down.

 

15 The eyes of all hope in you, and you give them their food in due season.

 

16 You open your hand and fill every living thing with favor.

 

17 Righteous is the Lord in all his ways and holy in all his works.

 

18 The Lord is near to all who call upon him, to all who call upon him in truth.

 

19 He will do the will of those who fear him, and he will hear their supplication and save them.

 

20 The Lord keeps all who love him, but all sinners he will destroy.

 

21 My mouth shall speak the praise of the Lord, and let all flesh bless his holy name forever and ever. 

 

Psalm 145

 

1 Alleluia; of Haggai and Zechariah. Praise the Lord, O my soul.

 

2 I will praise the Lord throughout my life; I will sing to my God as long as I exist.

 

3 Do not put your trust in rulers, nor in sons of men, in whom there is no salvation.

 

4 His spirit shall go forth, and he shall return to his earth; on that day all their thoughts shall perish.

 

5 Blessed is he whose helper is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the Lord his God,

 

6 who made heaven and earth, the sea and all that is in them, who keeps truth forever,

 

7 who executes judgment for the wronged, who gives food to the hungry. The Lord sets free those who are bound;

 

8 the Lord raises up those who are cast down; the Lord gives wisdom to the blind; the Lord loves the righteous;

 

9 the Lord protects the strangers; he will take up the orphan and the widow, and the way of sinners he will destroy.

 

10 The Lord shall reign forever, your God, O Zion, from generation to generation. 

 

Psalm 146

 

1 Alleluia; of Haggai and Zechariah. Praise the Lord, for a psalm is good; may praise be sweet to our God.

 

2 The Lord builds up Jerusalem, and he will gather together the dispersed of Israel,

 

3 he who heals the broken in heart and binds up their wounds,

 

4 who numbers the multitude of the stars, and calls them all by names.

 

5 Great is our Lord, and great is his strength, and of his understanding there is no number.

 

6 The Lord lifts up the meek, but humbles sinners down to the ground.

 

7 Begin to the Lord with thanksgiving; sing to our God with the harp,

 

8 to him who covers the heaven with clouds, who prepares rain for the earth, who makes grass spring up on the mountains, and green herb for the service of men,

 

9 who gives to the cattle their food, and to the young ravens that call upon him.

 

10 He will not take pleasure in the strength of the horse, nor is he well pleased with the legs of a man;

 

11 the Lord is well pleased with those who fear him, and with those who hope in his mercy. 

 

Psalm 147

 

1 Alleluia. Of Haggai and Zechariah. Praise, O Jerusalem, the Lord; praise thy God, O Zion.

 

2 For he hath strengthened the bars of thy gates; he hath blessed thy children within thee.

 

3 He who maketh thy borders peace, and filleth thee with the finest of wheat.

 

4 He who sendeth his word to the earth; swiftly shall his word run.

 

5 He who giveth snow like wool, who scattereth hoarfrost like ashes.

 

6 He who casteth forth his ice like morsels; before his cold, who can stand?

 

7 He shall send forth his word and melt them; his wind shall blow, and the waters shall flow.

 

8 He declareth his word unto Jacob, his statutes and his judgments unto Israel.

5 Let them praise the name of the Lord, for he spoke, and they came to be; he commanded, and they were created.

 

6 He established them forever and ever; he set a decree, and it will not pass away.

 

7 Praise the Lord from the earth, sea monsters and all deeps;

 

8 fire, hail, snow, ice, stormy wind, those doing his word;

 

9 the mountains and all hills, fruit-bearing trees and all cedars;

 

10 the wild animals and all cattle, creeping things and winged birds;

 

11 kings of the earth and all peoples, rulers and all judges of the earth;

 

12 young men and virgins, elders with youths;

 

13 let them praise the name of the Lord, for exalted is his name alone; his confession is upon earth and heaven.

 

14 And he will exalt the horn of his people; a hymn to all his holy ones, to the sons of Israel, a people drawing near to him. 

 

Psalm 149

 

1 Alleluia. Sing to the Lord a new song; his praise is in the assembly of the holy ones.

 

2 Let Israel rejoice in him who made him, and let the sons of Zion exult in their king.

 

3 Let them praise his name in the dance; with timbrel and psaltery let them make music to him,

 

4 for the Lord takes pleasure in his people, and he will exalt the meek with salvation.

 

5 The holy ones shall glory in glory and shall exult upon their beds;

 

6 the high praises of God are in their throat, and two-edged swords in their hands,

 

7 to execute vengeance among the nations, rebukes among the peoples,

 

8 to bind their kings with fetters and their nobles with iron manacles,

 

9 to execute upon them the judgment that is written: this glory belongs to all his holy ones. 

 

Psalm 150

 

1 Alleluia. Praise God in his holy places; praise him in the firmament of his power.

 

2 Praise him for his mighty deeds; praise him according to the abundance of his greatness.

 

3 Praise him with the sound of the trumpet; praise him with harp and lyre.

 

4 Praise him with timbrel and dance; praise him with strings and pipe.

 

5 Praise him with well-sounding cymbals; praise him with cymbals of jubilation.

Psalm 151

 

1 This psalm is written by David's own hand, and is outside the number; when he fought in single combat with Goliath. I was small among my brothers, and the youngest in my father's house; I tended my father's sheep.

 

2 My hands made an instrument; my fingers fitted together a harp.

 

3 And who shall tell my Lord? The Lord himself, he himself hears.

 

4 He sent forth his angel and took me from my father's sheep, and anointed me with the oil of his anointing.

 

5 My brothers were handsome and tall, yet the Lord took no pleasure in them.

 

6 I went out to meet the foreigner, and he cursed me by his idols;

 

7 but I, drawing his own sword, beheaded him and took away the reproach from the sons of Israel.
