EXODUS

 

Chapter 1

 

1 These are the names of the sons of Israel who came into Egypt together with Jacob their father, for each came in with his whole household:

 

2 Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah,

 

3 Issachar, Zebulun and Benjamin,

 

4 Dan and Naphtali, Gad and Asher.

 

5 And Joseph was in Egypt. And all the souls that came from Jacob were seventy-five.

 

6 And Joseph died, and all his brothers, and all that generation.

 

7 But the sons of Israel increased and multiplied and became very numerous, and grew exceedingly, exceedingly strong, and the land was filled with them.

 

8 And another king arose over Egypt, who did not know Joseph.

 

9 And he said to his nation: Behold, the race of the sons of Israel is a great multitude, and is stronger than we.

 

10 Come therefore, let us deal shrewdly with them, lest they multiply, and, whenever war befalls us, these also join themselves to our enemies, and having made war on us depart from the land.

 

11 And he set over them overseers of the works, so that they might afflict them with the works; and they built fortified cities for Pharaoh: Pithom and Rameses and On, which is Heliopolis.

 

12 But the more they humbled them, the more numerous they became and grew exceedingly, exceedingly strong; and the Egyptians abhorred the sons of Israel.

 

13 And the Egyptians oppressed the sons of Israel with violence,

 

14 and filled their life with pains through hard labors, in the clay and the brickmaking and all the works in the fields, in all the works by which they enslaved them with violence.

 

15 And the king of the Egyptians spoke to the midwives of the Hebrews — the name of one of them was Sepphora, and of the second, Phua

 

16 and he said: When you act as midwives to the Hebrew women and they are about to give birth, if it is a male, kill it, but if a female, preserve it.

 

17 But the midwives feared God and did not do as the king of Egypt commanded them, but kept the male children alive.

 

18 And the king of Egypt called the midwives and said to them: Why indeed have you done this thing, and kept the male children alive?

 

19 And the midwives said to Pharaoh: The Hebrew women are not like the Egyptian women, for they give birth before the midwives come in to them. And they kept bearing children.

 

20 And God dealt well with the midwives, and the people multiplied and grew very strong.

 

21 And because the midwives feared God, he made households for them.

 

22 And Pharaoh commanded all his people, saying: Every male that is born to the Hebrews, cast into the river; but every female, keep alive.

 

Chapter 2

 

1 Now there was a certain man of the tribe of Levi, who took one of the daughters of Levi and had her as wife.

 

2 And she conceived and bore a male child; and seeing that he was fair, they hid him three months.

 

3 But when they could no longer conceal him, his mother took for him a basket and smeared it with pitch and bitumen, and placed the child in it, and set it in the marsh beside the river.

 

4 And his sister watched from afar, to learn what would happen to him.

 

5 Now the daughter of Pharaoh came down to bathe at the river, and her maidservants walked along beside the river; and seeing the basket in the marsh, she sent her maidservant and took it up.

 

6 And when she opened it, she saw a child crying in the basket; and the daughter of Pharaoh had pity on him and said, "This is one of the children of the Hebrews."

 

7 And his sister said to the daughter of Pharaoh, "Do you wish me to call for you a nursing woman from the Hebrews, and she will suckle the child for you?"

 

8 And the daughter of Pharaoh said to her, "Go." And the young girl went and called the child's mother.

 

9 And the daughter of Pharaoh said to her, "Take care of this child for me and suckle him for me, and I will give you your wages." And the woman took the child and suckled him.

 

10 And when the child had grown, she brought him to the daughter of Pharaoh, and he became a son to her; and she named him Moses, saying, "I drew him out of the water."

 

11 And it came to pass in those many days that Moses, having grown up, went out to his brothers the sons of Israel. And observing their toil, he saw an Egyptian man striking a certain Hebrew, one of his own brothers, the sons of Israel.

 

12 And looking around this way and that, he saw no one; and he struck down the Egyptian and hid him in the sand.

 

13 And going out on the second day, he saw two Hebrew men fighting, and he said to the one doing wrong, "Why do you strike your neighbor?"

 

14 But he said, "Who made you a ruler and judge over us? Do you wish to kill me as you killed the Egyptian yesterday?" And Moses was afraid and said, "Has this matter become so known?"

 

15 And Pharaoh heard of this matter and sought to kill Moses; but Moses withdrew from the face of Pharaoh and dwelt in the land of Midian; and coming to the land of Midian, he sat down by the well.

 

16 Now the priest of Midian had seven daughters, who tended the sheep of their father Jethro; and coming, they drew water until they filled the troughs to water the sheep of their father Jethro.

 

17 But the shepherds came and drove them away; and Moses rose up and rescued them, and drew water for them and watered their sheep.

 

18 And they came to Reuel their father; and he said to them, "Why have you come so quickly today?"

 

19 And they said, "An Egyptian man rescued us from the shepherds, and drew water for us and watered our sheep."

 

20 And he said to his daughters, "And where is he? And why have you left the man thus? Call him, then, that he may eat bread."

 

21 And Moses settled with the man, and he gave Zipporah his daughter to Moses as wife.

 

22 And the woman conceived and bore a son, and Moses named him Gershom, saying, "I am a sojourner in a foreign land."

 

23 And after those many days the king of Egypt died. And the sons of Israel groaned because of their labors and cried out, and their cry went up to God because of their labors.

 

24 And God heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham and Isaac and Jacob.

 

25 And God looked upon the sons of Israel, and was known to them.

 

Chapter 3

 

1 Now Moses was tending the sheep of Jethro his father-in-law, the priest of Midian, and he led the sheep beyond the wilderness and came to the mountain Horeb.

 

2 And an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire out of the bush, and he saw that the bush was burning with fire, but the bush was not consumed.

 

3 And Moses said, "I will turn aside and see this great sight, why the bush is not consumed."

 

4 And when the Lord saw that he drew near to look, the Lord called to him out of the bush, saying, "Moses, Moses." And he said, "What is it?"

 

5 And he said, "Do not come near here; loose the sandals from your feet, for the place on which you stand is holy ground."

 

6 And he said to him, "I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob." And Moses turned away his face, for he was afraid to gaze before God.

 

7 And the Lord said to Moses, "I have surely seen the affliction of my people who are in Egypt, and I have heard their cry because of their taskmasters; for I know their pain;

 

8 and I have come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them out of that land, and to bring them into a good and spacious land, into a land flowing with milk and honey, into the place of the Canaanites and Hittites and Amorites and Perizzites and Girgashites and Hivites and Jebusites.

 

9 And now, behold, the cry of the sons of Israel has come to me, and I have seen the oppression with which the Egyptians oppress them.

 

10 And now come, I will send you to Pharaoh king of Egypt, and you shall bring my people, the sons of Israel, out of the land of Egypt."

 

11 And Moses said to God, "Who am I, that I should go to Pharaoh king of Egypt, and that I should bring the sons of Israel out of the land of Egypt?"

 

12 And God spoke to Moses, saying, "I will be with you, and this shall be the sign for you that I am sending you: when you bring my people out of Egypt, you shall serve God on this mountain."

 

13 And Moses said to God, "Behold, I will come to the sons of Israel and say to them, 'The God of your fathers has sent me to you'; they will ask me, 'What is his name?' What shall I say to them?"

 

14 And God said to Moses, "I am HE WHO IS." And he said, "Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel: 'HE WHO IS has sent me to you.'"

 

15 And God said again to Moses, "Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel: 'The Lord, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you.' This is my name forever, and a memorial for generations of generations.

 

16 Go therefore and gather the elders of the sons of Israel and say to them, 'The Lord, the God of your fathers, has appeared to me, the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob, saying, I have surely visited you and seen all that has befallen you in Egypt,

 

17 and I have said, I will bring you up out of the affliction of the Egyptians into the land of the Canaanites and Hittites and Amorites and Perizzites and Girgashites and Hivites and Jebusites, into a land flowing with milk and honey.'

 

18 And they will listen to your voice; and you and the elders of Israel shall go in to Pharaoh king of Egypt, and you shall say to him, 'The God of the Hebrews has called us; let us therefore go a journey of three days into the wilderness, that we may sacrifice to our God.'

 

19 But I know that Pharaoh king of Egypt will not let you go, except by a mighty hand.

 

20 And I will stretch out my hand and strike the Egyptians with all my wonders which I will do among them, and after that he will send you out.

 

21 And I will give this people favor before the Egyptians; and when you depart, you shall not go away empty-handed.

 

22 Each woman shall ask of her neighbor and of the woman who lodges with her articles of silver and gold and clothing, and you shall put them upon your sons and upon your daughters, and you shall plunder the Egyptians."

 

Chapter 4

 

1 And Moses answered and said, "But if they do not believe me nor listen to my voice—for they will say, 'God has not appeared to you'—what shall I say to them?"

 

2 And the Lord said to him, "What is this that is in your hand?" And he said, "A rod."

 

3 And he said, "Cast it on the ground." And he cast it on the ground, and it became a serpent; and Moses fled from it.

 

4 And the Lord said to Moses, "Stretch out your hand and take hold of its tail." So stretching out his hand he took hold of the tail, and it became a rod in his hand

 

5 "so that they may believe you, that the Lord, the God of their fathers, has appeared to you, the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob."

 

6 And the Lord said to him again, "Put your hand into your bosom." And he put his hand into his bosom; and he brought his hand out of his bosom, and his hand became like snow.

 

7 And he said, "Put your hand into your bosom again." And he put his hand into his bosom; and he brought it out of his bosom, and again it was restored to the color of his flesh.

 

8 "But if they do not believe you nor listen to the voice of the first sign, they will believe you at the voice of the last sign.

 

9 And it shall be, if they do not believe you at these two signs nor listen to your voice, you shall take some of the water of the river and pour it on the dry ground, and the water, whatever you take from the river, shall become blood on the dry ground."

 

10 And Moses said to the Lord, "I beg you, Lord, I am not capable—not before yesterday, nor before the third day, nor since you began to speak to your servant; I am weak of voice and slow of tongue."

 

11 And the Lord said to Moses, "Who gave a mouth to man, and who made one hard of hearing and deaf, seeing and blind? Was it not I, God?

 

12 And now go, and I will open your mouth and instruct you in what you are to say."

 

13 And Moses said, "I beg you, Lord, appoint another capable man, whom you will send."

 

14 And the Lord, being angered with wrath against Moses, said, "Behold, is there not Aaron your brother, the Levite? I know that he will surely speak for you; and behold, he will come out to meet you, and seeing you he will rejoice within himself.

 

15 And you shall speak to him and put my words into his mouth; and I will open your mouth and his mouth, and I will instruct you in what you shall do.

 

16 And he shall speak for you to the people, and he shall be your mouth, and you shall be for him the things pertaining to God.

 

17 And this rod that was turned into a serpent you shall take in your hand, with which you shall perform the signs."

 

18 And Moses went and returned to Jethro his father-in-law, and he says, "I will go and return to my brothers who are in Egypt, and I will see whether they are still alive." And Jethro said to Moses, "Go in health."

 

19 And after those many days the king of Egypt died. And the Lord said to Moses in Midian, "Go, depart into Egypt; for all those who were seeking your life have died."

 

20 And Moses took his wife and his children and set them upon the beasts of burden and returned to Egypt; and Moses took the rod from God in his hand.

 

21 And the Lord said to Moses, "As you go and return to Egypt, see that all the wonders which I have given into your hands—you shall do them before Pharaoh; but I will harden his heart, and he will not send the people away.

 

22 And you shall say to Pharaoh, 'Thus says the Lord: Israel is my firstborn son.

 

23 And I said to you, Send away my people, that they may serve me; if then you refuse to send them away, see, then, I will kill your firstborn son.'"

 

24 And it came to pass on the way, at the lodging place, an angel of the Lord met him and sought to kill him.

 

25 And Zipporah took a flint and circumcised the foreskin of her son, and fell at his feet and said, "The blood of the circumcision of my child has been staunched."

 

26 And he departed from him, because she said, "The blood of the circumcision of my child has been staunched."

 

27 And the Lord said to Aaron, "Go to meet Moses in the wilderness." And he went and met him at the mountain of God, and they kissed one another.

 

28 And Moses reported to Aaron all the words of the Lord with which he had sent him, and all the signs which he had commanded him.

 

29 And Moses and Aaron went and gathered the elders of the sons of Israel.

 

30 And Aaron spoke all these words which God had spoken to Moses, and he performed the signs before the people.

 

31 And the people believed and rejoiced, because God had visited the sons of Israel and because he had seen their affliction; and the people bowed down and worshiped.

 

Chapter 5

 

1 And after these things Moses and Aaron went in to Pharaoh and said to him, "Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: Send away my people, that they may hold a feast to me in the wilderness."

 

2 And Pharaoh said, "Who is he, that I should listen to his voice so as to send away the sons of Israel? I do not know the Lord, and I will not send Israel away."

 

3 And they said to him, "The God of the Hebrews has summoned us; we will therefore go a journey of three days into the wilderness, so that we may sacrifice to our God, lest death or slaughter befall us."

 

4 And the king of Egypt said to them, "Why, Moses and Aaron, do you turn my people away from their works? Go, each of you, to his own work."

 

5 And Pharaoh said, "Behold, the people are now numerous; let us not, then, give them rest from their works."

 

6 And Pharaoh gave orders to the taskmasters of the people and to the scribes, saying,

 

7 "Straw shall no longer be given to the people for brickmaking as yesterday and the day before; let them go themselves and gather straw for themselves.

 

8 And you shall impose on them the quota of bricks which they make each day; you shall take away nothing, for they are idle; that is why they have cried out, saying, 'Let us go and sacrifice to our God.'

 

9 Let the works of these men be made heavier, and let them attend to these things and not attend to empty words."

 

10 And the taskmasters and the scribes pressed them and spoke to the people, saying, "Thus says Pharaoh: I no longer give you straw;

 

11 go yourselves and gather straw for yourselves wherever you may find it, for nothing shall be taken away from your quota."

 

12 And the people were scattered throughout all Egypt to gather stubble for straw;

 

13 and the taskmasters pressed them, saying, "Complete the works due each day, just as when the straw was given to you."

 

14 And the scribes of the race of the sons of Israel, who had been set over them by Pharaoh's overseers, were beaten, and they were asked, "Why have you not completed your quotas of brickmaking, as yesterday and the day before, and today's as well?"

 

15 And the scribes of the sons of Israel went in and cried out to Pharaoh, saying, "Why do you treat your servants thus?

 

16 Straw is not given to your servants, and they tell us to make the bricks, and behold, your servants have been beaten; you will therefore wrong your people."

 

17 And he said to them, "You are idle, you are idlers; that is why you say, 'Let us go and sacrifice to our God.'

 

18 Now therefore go and work; for the straw shall not be given to you, and you shall deliver the quota of bricks."

 

19 And the scribes of the sons of Israel saw themselves in trouble, when it was said, "You shall not leave off the daily quota of brickmaking."

 

20 And they met Moses and Aaron, who were coming to meet them as they came out from Pharaoh,

 

21 and they said to them, "May God look upon you and judge, because you have made our odor loathsome before Pharaoh and before his servants, so as to put a sword into his hands to kill us."

 

22 And Moses turned back to the Lord and said, "Lord, why have you afflicted this people? And why have you sent me?

 

23 For from the time I went to Pharaoh to speak in your name, he has afflicted this people, and you have not delivered your people."

 

Chapter 6

 

1 And the Lord said to Moses, "Now you shall see what I will do to Pharaoh; for by a mighty hand he will send them out, and with an uplifted arm he will drive them out of his land."

 

2 And God spoke to Moses and said to him, "I am the Lord;

 

3 and I appeared to Abraham and Isaac and Jacob, being their God, but my name 'Lord' I did not make known to them.

 

4 And I established my covenant with them, so as to give them the land of the Canaanites, the land in which they sojourned, in which also they dwelt as strangers upon it.

 

5 And I have heard the groaning of the sons of Israel, whom the Egyptians are enslaving, and I have remembered your covenant.

 

6 Go, speak to the sons of Israel, saying: I am the Lord, and I will bring you out from the dominion of the Egyptians, and I will deliver you from slavery, and I will redeem you with an uplifted arm and great judgment.

 

7 And I will take you to myself as a people for me, and I will be your God, and you shall know that I am the Lord your God, who brought you out from the oppression of the Egyptians.

 

8 And I will bring you into the land toward which I stretched out my hand to give it to Abraham and Isaac and Jacob, and I will give it to you as an inheritance: I am the Lord."

 

9 And Moses spoke thus to the sons of Israel, but they did not listen to Moses because of faintheartedness and because of the hard labors.

 

10 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,

 

11 "Go in, speak to Pharaoh, king of Egypt, that he may send the sons of Israel out of his land."

 

12 But Moses spoke before the Lord, saying, "Behold, the sons of Israel have not listened to me; how then will Pharaoh listen to me? And I am without eloquence."

 

13 And the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron and gave them orders for Pharaoh, king of Egypt, so as to send the sons of Israel out of the land of Egypt.

 

14 And these are the heads of the houses of their fathers: the sons of Reuben, the firstborn of Israel: Enoch and Phallous, Asron and Charmi; this is the kindred of Reuben.

 

15 And the sons of Simeon: Iemouel and Iamin and Aod and Iachin and Saar and Saul, the son of the Phoenician woman; these are the families of the sons of Simeon.

 

16 And these are the names of the sons of Levi according to their kindreds: Gedson, Kaath, and Merari; and the years of the life of Levi were one hundred thirty-seven.

 

17 And these are the sons of Gedson: Lobeni and Semei, the houses of their family.

 

18 And the sons of Kaath: Ambram and Issaar, Chebron and Oziel; and the years of the life of Kaath were one hundred thirty years.

 

19 And the sons of Merari: Mooli and Omousi. These are the houses of the families of Levi according to their kindreds.

 

20 And Ambram took Jochabed, the daughter of his father's brother, to himself as wife, and she bore him both Aaron and Moses and Mariam their sister; and the years of the life of Ambram were one hundred thirty-two years.

 

21 And the sons of Issaar: Kore and Naphek and Zechri.

 

22 And the sons of Oziel: Elisaphan and Setri.

 

23 And Aaron took Elisabeth, daughter of Aminadab, sister of Naasson, to himself as wife, and she bore him Nadab and Abioud and Eleazar and Ithamar.

 

24 And the sons of Kore: Asir and Elkana and Abiasaph; these are the generations of Kore.

 

25 And Eleazar, the son of Aaron, took one of the daughters of Phoutiel to himself as wife, and she bore him Phinees. These are the heads of the family of the Levites according to their generations.

 

26 This is that Aaron and Moses to whom God said to bring the sons of Israel out of the land of Egypt with their host.

 

27 These are the ones who spoke with Pharaoh, king of Egypt, and brought the sons of Israel out of Egypt: this same Aaron and Moses.

 

28 On the day when the Lord spoke to Moses in the land of Egypt,

 

29 the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, "I am the Lord; speak to Pharaoh, king of Egypt, all that I say to you."

 

30 And Moses said before the Lord, "Behold, I am weak of voice; how then will Pharaoh listen to me?"

 

Chapter 7

 

1 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, Behold, I have made you a god to Pharaoh, and Aaron your brother shall be your prophet.

 

2 And you shall speak to him all that I command you, and Aaron your brother shall speak to Pharaoh, so that he send out the sons of Israel from his land.

 

3 But I will harden the heart of Pharaoh, and I will multiply my signs and wonders in the land of Egypt.

 

4 And Pharaoh will not listen to you; and I will lay my hand upon Egypt, and I will bring out with my power my people, the sons of Israel, from the land of Egypt with great vengeance,

 

5 and all the Egyptians shall know that I am the Lord, stretching out my hand upon Egypt, and I will bring out the sons of Israel from their midst.

 

6 And Moses and Aaron did so; just as the Lord commanded them, so they did.

 

7 And Moses was eighty years old, and Aaron his brother eighty-three years old, when he spoke to Pharaoh.

 

8 And the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying,

 

9 And if Pharaoh speaks to you, saying, Give us a sign or a wonder, then you shall say to Aaron your brother, Take the rod and cast it upon the ground before Pharaoh and before his servants, and it shall become a serpent.

 

10 And Moses and Aaron went in before Pharaoh and his servants, and they did so, just as the Lord commanded them; and Aaron cast down the rod before Pharaoh and before his servants, and it became a serpent.

 

11 But Pharaoh called together the wise men of Egypt and the sorcerers, and the enchanters of the Egyptians also did likewise with their sorceries.

 

12 And each one cast down his rod, and they became serpents; and the rod of Aaron swallowed up their rods.

 

13 And the heart of Pharaoh was hardened, and he did not listen to them, just as the Lord had spoken to them.

 

14 And the Lord said to Moses, The heart of Pharaoh is weighed down, so as not to send out the people.

 

15 Go to Pharaoh in the morning; behold, he goes out to the water, and you shall stand meeting him on the bank of the river, and you shall take in your hand the rod that was turned into a serpent.

 

16 And you shall say to him, The Lord, the God of the Hebrews, has sent me to you, saying, Send out my people, that they may serve me in the wilderness; and behold, you have not listened until now.

 

17 Thus says the Lord: By this you shall know that I am the Lord: behold, I strike with the rod that is in my hand upon the water in the river, and it shall change into blood;

 

18 and the fish in the river shall die, and the river shall stink, and the Egyptians shall not be able to drink water from the river.

 

19 And the Lord said to Moses, Say to Aaron your brother, Take your rod and stretch out your hand over the waters of Egypt and over their rivers and over their canals and over their marshes and over all their standing water, and it shall be blood. And there was blood in all the land of Egypt, both in the wooden vessels and in the stone ones.

 

20 And Moses and Aaron did so, just as the Lord commanded them; and lifting up his rod, he struck the water in the river before Pharaoh and before his servants, and all the water in the river changed into blood.

 

21 And the fish in the river died, and the river stank, and the Egyptians could not drink water from the river, and the blood was in all the land of Egypt.

 

22 And the enchanters of the Egyptians also did likewise with their sorceries; and the heart of Pharaoh was hardened, and he did not listen to them, just as the Lord had said.

 

23 And Pharaoh turned and went into his house, and did not set his mind even on this.

 

24 And all the Egyptians dug round about the river so as to drink water, and they could not drink water from the river.

 

25 And seven days were fulfilled after the Lord struck the river.

 

26 And the Lord said to Moses, Go in to Pharaoh and say to him, Thus says the Lord: Send out my people, that they may serve me;

 

27 but if you refuse to send them out, behold, I strike all your borders with frogs.

 

28 And the river shall belch forth frogs, and they shall come up and enter into your houses and into the chambers of your bedrooms and upon your beds, and into the houses of your servants and of your people, and into your dough and into your ovens;

 

29 and upon you and upon your servants and upon your people the frogs shall come up.

 

Chapter 8

 

1 And the Lord said to Moses, "Say to Aaron your brother, 'Stretch out your rod with your hand over the rivers and over the canals and over the marshes, and bring up the frogs.'"

 

2 And Aaron stretched out his hand over the waters of Egypt and brought up the frogs; and the frog was brought up and covered the land of Egypt.

 

3 And the enchanters of the Egyptians also did likewise with their sorceries, and they brought up the frogs upon the land of Egypt.

 

4 And Pharaoh called Moses and Aaron and said, "Pray for me to the Lord, and let him take away the frogs from me and from my people, and I will send the people away, and they shall sacrifice to the Lord."

 

5 And Moses said to Pharaoh, "Appoint to me when I shall pray for you and for your servants and for your people, to make the frogs vanish from you and from your people and from your houses; only in the river shall they be left."

 

6 And he said, "Tomorrow." So he said, "As you have said—that you may know that there is no other besides the Lord

 

7 and the frogs shall be removed from you and from your houses and from the courtyards and from your servants and from your people; only in the river shall they be left."

 

8 And Moses and Aaron went out from Pharaoh; and Moses cried to the Lord concerning the appointed matter of the frogs, as Pharaoh had appointed.

 

9 And the Lord did just as Moses said, and the frogs died out of the houses and out of the courtyards and out of the fields;

 

10 and they gathered them together in heaps upon heaps, and the land stank.

 

11 But when Pharaoh saw that there had come relief, his heart was hardened, and he did not listen to them, just as the Lord had spoken.

 

12 And the Lord said to Moses, "Say to Aaron, 'Stretch out your rod with your hand and strike the dust of the earth, and there shall be gnats on both men and beasts and in all the land of Egypt.'"

 

13 So Aaron stretched out the rod with his hand and struck the dust of the earth, and the gnats came upon both men and beasts, and in all the dust of the earth there were gnats in all the land of Egypt.

 

14 And the enchanters also did likewise with their sorceries, to bring forth the gnat, but they could not. And the gnats were on men and on beasts.

 

15 So the enchanters said to Pharaoh, "This is the finger of God." And Pharaoh's heart was hardened, and he did not listen to them, just as the Lord had spoken.

 

16 And the Lord said to Moses, "Rise early in the morning and stand before Pharaoh; and behold, he will go out to the water, and you shall say to him, 'Thus says the Lord: Send away my people, that they may serve me in the wilderness;

 

17 but if you are not willing to send away my people, behold, I will send upon you and upon your servants and upon your people and upon your houses the dog-fly, and the houses of the Egyptians shall be filled with the dog-fly, and also the land on which they are upon it.

 

18 And on that day I will glorify marvelously the land of Gesem, upon which my people is, upon which the dog-fly shall not be there, that you may know that I am the Lord, the Lord of all the earth.

 

19 And I will set a distinction between my people and your people; and tomorrow shall this sign be upon the land.'"

 

20 And the Lord did so, and the dog-fly came in a multitude into the houses of Pharaoh and into the houses of his servants and into all the land of Egypt, and the land was destroyed by the dog-fly.

 

21 And Pharaoh called Moses and Aaron, saying, "Go and sacrifice to your God in the land."

 

22 And Moses said, "It is not possible for it to be so; for we shall sacrifice to the Lord our God the abominations of the Egyptians; for if we sacrifice the abominations of the Egyptians before them, we shall be stoned.

 

23 We will go a journey of three days into the wilderness and sacrifice to the Lord our God, just as he told us."

 

24 And Pharaoh said, "I will send you away, and sacrifice to the Lord your God in the wilderness, but you shall not go far in your journey; pray, then, for me to the Lord."

 

25 And Moses said, "Behold, I will go out from you and pray to God, and the dog-fly will depart from you and from your servants and your people tomorrow; do not again, Pharaoh, deceive so as not to send away the people to sacrifice to the Lord."

 

26 And Moses went out from Pharaoh and prayed to God;

 

27 and the Lord did just as Moses said, and he removed the dog-fly from Pharaoh and his servants and his people, and not one was left.

 

28 And Pharaoh hardened his heart at this time also, and he was not willing to send away the people.

 

Chapter 9

 

1 And the Lord said to Moses, "Go in to Pharaoh and you shall say to him, 'Thus says the Lord, the God of the Hebrews: Send away my people, so that they may serve me.

 

2 If then you are unwilling to send away my people, but still hold them fast,

 

3 behold, the hand of the Lord shall be upon your livestock that are in the fields, upon the horses and upon the beasts of burden and the camels and cattle and sheep—a very great death.

 

4 And I will make a marvelous distinction at that time between the livestock of the Egyptians and the livestock of the sons of Israel; nothing specified shall die of all that belongs to the sons of Israel.'"

 

5 And God set a limit, saying, "Tomorrow the Lord will do this thing upon the land."

 

6 And the Lord did this thing on the next day, and all the livestock of the Egyptians died, but of the livestock of the sons of Israel not one died.

 

7 And when Pharaoh saw that of all the livestock of the sons of Israel not one had died, the heart of Pharaoh was hardened, and he did not send away the people.

 

8 And the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying, "Take, both of you, handfuls of soot from the furnace, and let Moses scatter it toward heaven before Pharaoh and before his servants,

 

9 and let it become dust upon all the land of Egypt, and there shall be upon men and upon four-footed beasts sores, festering boils, both on men and on the four-footed beasts and in all the land of Egypt."

 

10 And he took the soot of the furnace before Pharaoh, and Moses scattered it toward heaven, and there came sores, festering boils, on men and on the four-footed beasts.

 

11 And the sorcerers could not stand before Moses because of the sores; for the sores were on the sorcerers and in all the land of Egypt.

 

12 And the Lord hardened the heart of Pharaoh, and he did not listen to them, just as the Lord had ordered.

 

13 And the Lord said to Moses, "Rise early in the morning and stand before Pharaoh, and you shall say to him, 'Thus says the Lord, the God of the Hebrews: Send away my people, so that they may serve me.

 

14 For at this present time I am sending all my plagues into your heart and upon your servants and your people, so that you may know that there is no other like me in all the earth.

 

15 For now I could have stretched out my hand and struck you and your people with death, and you would have been wiped out from the earth;

 

16 and for this reason you have been preserved: that I may display my strength in you, and that my name may be proclaimed in all the earth.

 

17 Do you still, then, set yourself against my people, so as not to send them away?

 

18 Behold, at this hour tomorrow I will rain down a very heavy hail, such as has not occurred in Egypt from the day it was founded until this day.

 

19 Now therefore hasten to gather your livestock and all that you have in the field; for all the men and the beasts, as many as are found in the field and do not enter into a house, when the hail falls upon them, shall die.'"

 

20 He among the servants of Pharaoh who feared the word of the Lord gathered his livestock into the houses;

 

21 but he who did not give heed in his mind to the word of the Lord left his livestock in the fields.

 

22 And the Lord said to Moses, "Stretch out your hand toward heaven, and there shall be hail upon all the land of Egypt, upon the men and the beasts and upon every plant that is upon the earth."

 

23 And Moses stretched out his hand toward heaven, and the Lord gave thunder and hail, and fire ran along upon the earth, and the Lord rained hail upon all the land of Egypt.

 

24 And there was hail, and fire flaming in the hail; and the hail was exceedingly, exceedingly heavy, such as had not occurred in Egypt from the time a nation had come to be upon it.

 

25 And the hail struck in all the land of Egypt, from man to beast, and the hail struck every plant in the field, and the hail shattered all the trees in the fields;

 

26 only in the land of Goshen, where the sons of Israel were, there was no hail.

 

27 And Pharaoh sent and called Moses and Aaron and said to them, "I have sinned this time; the Lord is righteous, but I and my people are impious.

 

28 Pray therefore for me to the Lord, and let the thunders of God cease, and the hail and the fire; and I will send you away, and you shall no longer continue to remain."

 

29 And Moses said to him, "As soon as I go out of the city, I will spread out my hands to the Lord, and the thunders will cease, and the hail and the rain shall be no more; that you may know that the earth is the Lord's.

 

30 But as for you and your servants, I know that you have not yet feared the Lord."

 

31 Now the flax and the barley were struck; for the barley was standing ripe, and the flax was in seed.

 

32 But the wheat and the spelt were not struck, for they were late.

 

33 And Moses went out from Pharaoh outside the city and spread out his hands to the Lord, and the thunders ceased, and the hail, and the rain no longer dripped upon the earth.

 

34 And when Pharaoh saw that the rain and the hail and the thunders had ceased, he continued to sin, and he hardened his heart and that of his servants.

 

35 And the heart of Pharaoh was hardened, and he did not send away the sons of Israel, just as the Lord had spoken to Moses.

 

Chapter 10

 

1 And the Lord said to Moses, saying, Go in to Pharaoh; for I have hardened his heart and the heart of his servants, so that these signs may come upon them in succession;

 

2 so that you may recount in the ears of your children and to your children's children how I have mocked the Egyptians, and my signs which I performed among them, and you shall know that I am the Lord.

 

3 And Moses and Aaron went in before Pharaoh and said to him, Thus says the Lord, the God of the Hebrews: How long will you refuse to show me reverence? Send away my people, that they may serve me.

 

4 But if you are not willing to send away my people, behold, at this hour tomorrow I will bring a great swarm of locusts upon all your borders,

 

5 and it will cover the face of the land, and you will not be able to see the land, and it will devour all the remainder of the land that was left, which the hail left to you, and it will devour every tree that grows for you upon the land;

 

6 and your houses shall be filled, and the houses of your servants, and all the houses in all the land of the Egyptians, things which your fathers have never seen, nor their great-grandfathers, from the day they came upon the earth until this day. And Moses turned and went out from Pharaoh.

 

7 And Pharaoh's servants say to him, How long shall this be a snare to us? Send away the men, that they may serve their God; or do you wish to know that Egypt is destroyed?

 

8 And they brought Moses and Aaron back to Pharaoh, and he said to them, Go and serve your God; but who and who are they that are going?

 

9 And Moses says, We will go with the young men and the old, with our sons and daughters and sheep and cattle; for it is a feast of the Lord our God.

 

10 And he said to them, So be it, the Lord be with you! As I send you away, must I send your possessions too? See that evil lies before you.

 

11 Not so; but let the men go and serve God, for this is what you yourselves seek. And they cast them out from the presence of Pharaoh.

 

12 And the Lord said to Moses, Stretch out your hand over the land of Egypt, and let the locust come up upon the land, and it shall devour every plant of the land and all the fruit of the trees which the hail left.

 

13 And Moses lifted up his staff toward heaven, and the Lord brought a south wind upon the land all that day and all that night; when morning came, the south wind took up the locust

 

14 and brought it upon all the land of Egypt, and it settled upon all the borders of Egypt in very great numbers; before it there had never been such a locust swarm, and after this there shall not be such.

 

15 And it covered the face of the land, and the land was ruined; and it devoured every plant of the land and all the fruit of the trees which was left from the hail; there was left nothing green on the trees or in any plant of the field in all the land of Egypt.

 

16 And Pharaoh hastened to call Moses and Aaron, saying, I have sinned before the Lord your God and against you;

 

17 accept therefore my sin yet this once and pray to the Lord your God, and let him remove this death from me.

 

18 And Moses went out from Pharaoh and prayed to God.

 

19 And the Lord changed the wind to a mighty wind from the sea, and it took up the locust and cast it into the Red Sea, and not one locust was left in all the land of Egypt.

 

20 And the Lord hardened the heart of Pharaoh, and he did not send away the children of Israel.

 

21 And the Lord said to Moses, Stretch out your hand toward heaven, and let there be darkness upon the land of Egypt, a darkness that can be felt.

 

22 And Moses stretched out his hand toward heaven, and there was darkness, gloom, and tempest upon all the land of Egypt for three days,

 

23 and no one saw his brother for three days, and no one rose from his bed for three days; but for all the children of Israel there was light in all the places where they dwelt.

 

24 And Pharaoh called Moses and Aaron, saying, Go, serve the Lord your God; only leave behind your sheep and your cattle; and let your possessions go along with you.

 

25 And Moses said, But you also shall give us whole burnt offerings and sacrifices, which we will offer to the Lord our God,

 

26 and our cattle shall go with us, and we will not leave behind a hoof; for from them we will take to serve the Lord our God; and we do not know with what we shall serve the Lord our God until we come there.

 

27 But the Lord hardened the heart of Pharaoh, and he was not willing to send them away.

 

28 And Pharaoh says, Depart from me; take heed to yourself never again to see my face; for on the day you appear to me, you shall die.

 

29 And Moses says, You have spoken; I will no more appear before your face.

 

Chapter 11

 

1 And the Lord said to Moses, "Yet one more plague will I bring upon Pharaoh and upon Egypt, and after this he will send you out from here; and when he sends you out, he will drive you out completely, with everything.

 

2 Speak therefore secretly in the ears of the people, and let each man ask from his neighbor, and each woman from her neighbor, vessels of silver and gold and clothing."

 

3 And the Lord gave favor to his people before the Egyptians, and they lent to them; and the man Moses became very great before the Egyptians and before Pharaoh and before all his servants.

 

4 And Moses said, "Thus says the Lord: About midnight I will go forth into the midst of Egypt,

 

5 and every firstborn in the land of Egypt shall die, from the firstborn of Pharaoh, who sits upon the throne, even to the firstborn of the servant girl who is at the mill, and to the firstborn of every beast,

 

6 and there shall be a great cry throughout all the land of Egypt, such as has not been and such as shall never be again.

 

7 But among all the sons of Israel not a dog shall growl with its tongue, against man or beast, so that you may know how greatly the Lord will distinguish between the Egyptians and Israel.

 

8 And all these your servants shall come down to me and bow down before me, saying, 'Go out, you and all your people whom you lead'; and after that I will go out." And Moses went out from Pharaoh in anger.

 

9 And the Lord said to Moses, "Pharaoh will not listen to you, so that I may greatly multiply my signs and wonders in the land of Egypt."

 

10 And Moses and Aaron performed all these signs and wonders in the land of Egypt before Pharaoh; but the Lord hardened Pharaoh's heart, and he was not willing to send the sons of Israel out of the land of Egypt.

 

Chapter 12

 

1 And the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt, saying:

 

2 This month shall be for you the beginning of months; it is the first for you among the months of the year.

 

3 Speak to the whole congregation of the sons of Israel, saying: On the tenth of this month let them take each a sheep according to the houses of their families, each a sheep per household.

 

4 But if those in the household are too few to be enough for a sheep, he shall take with him his neighbor who is near him, according to the number of souls; each shall count what suffices for him toward a sheep.

 

5 You shall have a perfect sheep, a male, a year old; you shall take it from the lambs and the kids.

 

6 And it shall be kept by you until the fourteenth of this month, and the whole multitude of the congregation of the sons of Israel shall slaughter it toward evening.

 

7 And they shall take some of the blood and put it on the two doorposts and on the lintel in the houses in which they eat them.

 

8 And they shall eat the flesh this night, roasted with fire, and they shall eat unleavened bread with bitter herbs.

 

9 You shall not eat of them raw or boiled in water, but only roasted with fire, the head with the feet and the inward parts.

 

10 You shall leave nothing of it until morning, and you shall not break a bone of it; but what is left of it until morning you shall burn with fire.

 

11 And thus shall you eat it: your loins girded, and your sandals on your feet, and your staffs in your hands; and you shall eat it in haste, it is the Pascha of the Lord.

 

12 And I will pass through the land of Egypt on this night and will strike every firstborn in the land of Egypt, from man to beast, and on all the gods of the Egyptians I will execute vengeance: I am the Lord.

 

13 And the blood shall be for you as a sign on the houses in which you are there, and I will see the blood and will protect you, and there shall not be among you a plague of destruction when I strike in the land of Egypt.

 

14 And this day shall be a memorial for you, and you shall celebrate it as a feast to the Lord throughout all your generations; as an everlasting ordinance you shall celebrate it.

 

15 Seven days you shall eat unleavened bread, and from the first day you shall remove leaven from your houses; everyone who eats leaven, that soul shall be destroyed from Israel, from the first day until the seventh day.

 

16 And the first day shall be called holy, and the seventh day shall be a holy convocation for you; you shall do no servile work on them, except what must be done for every soul—this alone shall be done by you.

 

17 And you shall keep this commandment; for on this day I will bring your host out of the land of Egypt, and you shall observe this day throughout your generations as an everlasting ordinance.

 

18 Beginning on the fourteenth day of the first month, from evening you shall eat unleavened bread until the twenty-first day of the month, until evening.

 

19 For seven days leaven shall not be found in your houses; everyone who eats what is leavened, that soul shall be destroyed from the congregation of Israel, whether among the sojourners or the natives of the land.

 

20 You shall eat nothing leavened; in every dwelling of yours you shall eat unleavened bread.

 

21 Then Moses called the whole council of elders of the sons of Israel and said to them: Go and take for yourselves a sheep according to your kindreds and sacrifice the Pascha.

 

22 And you shall take a bunch of hyssop, and dipping it in the blood that is by the door, you shall touch the lintel and both the doorposts with some of the blood that is by the door; and none of you shall go out of the door of his house until morning.

 

23 And the Lord will pass by to strike the Egyptians, and he will see the blood on the lintel and on both the doorposts, and the Lord will pass by the door and will not allow the destroyer to enter your houses to strike.

 

24 And you shall keep this word as an ordinance for yourself and for your sons forever.

 

25 And when you enter the land which the Lord shall give you, as he has spoken, you shall keep this service.

 

26 And it shall be, when your sons say to you, What is this service?

 

27 you shall say to them: This Pascha is a sacrifice to the Lord, because he protected the houses of the sons of Israel in Egypt when he struck the Egyptians, but delivered our houses. And the people bowed down and worshiped.

 

28 And the sons of Israel went and did as the Lord had commanded Moses and Aaron; so they did.

 

29 And it came to pass at midnight that the Lord struck every firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh who sat on the throne to the firstborn of the captive woman in the dungeon, and to the firstborn of every beast.

 

30 And Pharaoh rose up by night, and all his servants and all the Egyptians, and there was a great cry in all the land of Egypt; for there was no house in which there was not one dead.

 

31 And Pharaoh called Moses and Aaron by night and said to them: Rise and go out from my people, both you and the sons of Israel; go and serve the Lord your God, as you say.

 

32 And take your sheep and your oxen and go, and bless me also.

 

33 And the Egyptians pressed the people to drive them out of the land in haste; for they said, We are all dying.

 

34 And the people took up the dough before it was leavened, their kneading bowls bound up in their garments upon their shoulders.

 

35 And the sons of Israel did as Moses had directed them, and they asked of the Egyptians articles of silver and gold, and clothing.

 

36 And the Lord gave his people favor before the Egyptians, and they lent to them; and they plundered the Egyptians.

 

37 And the sons of Israel set out from Rameses to Succoth, about six hundred thousand men on foot, besides the household baggage.

 

38 And a great mixed multitude went up with them, and sheep and oxen and very many cattle.

 

39 And they baked the dough which they brought out of Egypt into unleavened cakes baked in the ashes; for it was not leavened, since the Egyptians drove them out, and they could not delay, nor did they prepare provisions for themselves for the journey.

 

40 Now the sojourning of the sons of Israel, during which they dwelt in the land of Egypt and in the land of Canaan, was four hundred and thirty years.

 

41 And it came to pass after the four hundred and thirty years that all the host of the Lord went out of the land of Egypt.

 

42 It is a night of vigil for the Lord, to bring them out of the land of Egypt; that same night is a vigil to the Lord, to be kept by all the sons of Israel throughout their generations.

 

43 And the Lord said to Moses and Aaron, saying: This is the law of the Pascha: no foreigner shall eat of it;

 

44 and any man's servant or one bought with money—you shall circumcise him, and then he shall eat of it;

 

45 a sojourner or a hired man shall not eat of it.

 

46 It shall be eaten in one house, and you shall not carry any of the flesh outside the house; and you shall not break a bone of it.

 

47 The whole congregation of the sons of Israel shall keep it.

 

48 And if any proselyte comes to you to keep the Pascha to the Lord, you shall circumcise every male of his, and then he shall come near to keep it, and he shall be as the native of the land; no uncircumcised person shall eat of it.

 

49 There shall be one law for the native and for the proselyte who comes among you.

 

50 And the sons of Israel did as the Lord commanded Moses and Aaron concerning them; so they did.

 

51 And it came to pass on that day that the Lord brought the sons of Israel out of the land of Egypt with their host.

 

Chapter 13

 

1 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,

 

2 "Consecrate to me every firstborn, first-produced, opening every womb among the sons of Israel, from man to beast; it is mine."

 

 

3 And Moses said to the people, "Remember this day, on which you came out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery; for with a mighty hand the Lord brought you out from here; and no leaven shall be eaten.

 

4 For on this day you are going out, in the month of the new grain.

 

5 And it shall be, when the Lord your God brings you into the land of the Canaanites and Hittites and Hivites and Girgashites and Amorites and Perizzites and Jebusites, which he swore to your fathers to give you, a land flowing with milk and honey, that you shall perform this service in this month.

 

6 Six days you shall eat unleavened bread, and on the seventh day is a feast of the Lord.

 

7 You shall eat unleavened bread the seven days; nothing leavened shall be seen with you, nor shall you have leaven in all your borders.

 

8 And you shall tell your son on that day, saying, 'Because of this the Lord God acted for me when I was coming out of Egypt.'

 

9 And it shall be to you a sign upon your hand and a memorial before your eyes, so that the law of the Lord may be in your mouth; for with a mighty hand the Lord God brought you out of Egypt.

 

10 And you shall keep this law according to its appointed seasons, from days to days.

 

11 And it shall be, when the Lord your God brings you into the land of the Canaanites, as he swore to your fathers, and gives it to you,

 

12 that you shall set apart everything opening the womb, the males, for the Lord; everything opening the womb from the herds or among your livestock, whatever you have, the males, you shall consecrate to the Lord.

 

13 Everything opening the womb of a donkey you shall exchange for a sheep; but if you do not exchange it, you shall redeem it. Every firstborn of man among your sons you shall redeem.

 

14 And if your son asks you afterward, saying, 'What is this?' you shall say to him, 'With a mighty hand the Lord brought us out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.

 

15 And when Pharaoh hardened himself against sending us away, he killed every firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of men to the firstborn of beasts. Therefore I sacrifice to the Lord everything opening the womb, the males, and every firstborn of my sons I will redeem.'

 

16 And it shall be for a sign upon your hand and an immovable thing before your eyes; for with a mighty hand the Lord brought you out of Egypt."

 

17 Now when Pharaoh sent the people away, God did not lead them by the way of the land of the Philistines, because it was near; for God said, "Lest the people regret it when they see war, and turn back to Egypt."

 

18 And God led the people around by the way into the wilderness, to the Red Sea. And in the fifth generation the sons of Israel went up out of the land of Egypt.

 

19 And Moses took the bones of Joseph with him; for Joseph had bound the sons of Israel with an oath, saying, "The Lord will surely visit you, and you shall carry up my bones from here with you."

 

20 And the sons of Israel set out from Succoth and encamped at Etham beside the wilderness.

 

21 And God led them, by day in a pillar of cloud to show them the way, and by night in a pillar of fire.

 

22 The pillar of cloud did not fail by day, nor the pillar of fire by night, before all the people.

 

Chapter 14

 

1 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,

 

2 "Speak to the sons of Israel, and let them turn back and encamp opposite the settlement, between Magdolus and the sea, over against Beelsepphon; before them you shall encamp by the sea.

 

3 And Pharaoh will say to his people, 'These sons of Israel are wandering in the land, for the wilderness has shut them in.'

 

4 But I will harden Pharaoh's heart, and he will pursue after them; and I will be glorified in Pharaoh and in all his army, and all the Egyptians shall know that I am the Lord." And they did so.

 

5 And it was reported to the king of the Egyptians that the people had fled; and the heart of Pharaoh and of his servants was turned against the people, and they said, "What is this we have done, sending away the sons of Israel so that they no longer serve us?"

 

6 So Pharaoh yoked his chariots and led away all his people with him,

 

7 taking six hundred chosen chariots and all the cavalry of the Egyptians and officers over them all.

 

8 And the Lord hardened the heart of Pharaoh king of Egypt and of his servants, and he pursued after the sons of Israel; but the sons of Israel went out with a high hand.

 

 9 And the Egyptians pursued after them and found them encamped by the sea; and all the cavalry and the chariots of Pharaoh and the horsemen and his army were opposite the settlement, over against Beelsepphon.

 

10 And Pharaoh drew near; and the sons of Israel, lifting up their eyes, saw, and the Egyptians had encamped behind them, and they were exceedingly afraid; and the sons of Israel cried out to the Lord.

 

11 And they said to Moses, "Was it because there were no tombs in the land of Egypt that you led us out to die in the wilderness? What is this you have done to us, leading us out of Egypt?

 

12 Was this not the word which we spoke to you in Egypt, saying, 'Leave us alone, that we may serve the Egyptians'? For it is better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in this wilderness."

 

13 But Moses said to the people, "Take courage; stand and see the salvation that is from God, which he will work for us today. For in the manner in which you have seen the Egyptians today, you shall never see them again forever.

 

14 The Lord will fight for you, and you shall be silent."

 

15 And the Lord said to Moses, "Why do you cry out to me? Speak to the sons of Israel, and let them set out.

 

16 And you, lift up your rod and stretch out your hand over the sea and split it, and let the sons of Israel enter into the midst of the sea on dry ground.

 

17 And behold, I will harden the heart of Pharaoh and of all the Egyptians, and they will go in after them; and I will be glorified in Pharaoh and in all his army and in his chariots and in his horses.

 

18 And all the Egyptians shall know that I am the Lord, when I am glorified in Pharaoh and in his chariots and horses."

 

19 And the angel of God who went before the camp of the sons of Israel removed and went behind them; and the pillar of cloud also removed from before them and stood behind them.

 

20 And it came between the camp of the Egyptians and the camp of Israel and stood; and there was darkness and gloom, and the night passed, and they did not come near one another all night.

 

21 And Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and the Lord drove back the sea with a strong south wind all night and made the sea dry, and the water was divided.

 

22 And the sons of Israel went into the midst of the sea on dry ground, and the water was a wall to them on the right and a wall on the left.

 

23 And the Egyptians pursued and went in after them, all the cavalry of Pharaoh and the chariots and the riders, into the midst of the sea.

 

24 And it came to pass in the morning watch that the Lord looked upon the camp of the Egyptians in the pillar of fire and cloud, and threw the camp of the Egyptians into confusion,

 

25 and bound the axles of their chariots and made them drive with difficulty. And the Egyptians said, "Let us flee from before Israel, for the Lord fights for them against the Egyptians."

 

26 And the Lord said to Moses, "Stretch out your hand over the sea, and let the water be restored and cover the Egyptians, both the chariots and the riders."

 

27 And Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and toward day the water returned to its place; and the Egyptians fled beneath the water, and the Lord shook off the Egyptians in the midst of the sea.

 

28 And the water, returning, covered the chariots and the riders and all the host of Pharaoh who had gone in after them into the sea; and not even one of them was left.

 

29 But the sons of Israel walked through the dry land in the midst of the sea, and the water was a wall to them on the right and a wall on the left.

 

30 And the Lord delivered Israel on that day from the hand of the Egyptians; and Israel saw the Egyptians dead by the shore of the sea.

 

31 And Israel saw the great hand, the things the Lord did to the Egyptians; and the people feared the Lord and believed in God and in Moses his servant.

 

Chapter 15

 

1 Then Moses and the sons of Israel sang this song to God, and they spoke, saying: Let us sing to the Lord, for he has been gloriously glorified; horse and rider he has thrown into the sea.

 

2 A helper and protector he became to me for salvation; this is my God, and I will glorify him, the God of my father, and I will exalt him.

 

3 The Lord, shattering wars—the Lord is his name.

 

4 The chariots of Pharaoh and his host he threw into the sea; chosen riders, officers, he drowned in the Red Sea.

 

5 With the deep he covered them; they sank into the depth like a stone.

 

6 Your right hand, O Lord, has been glorified in strength; your right hand, O Lord, has crushed the enemies.

 

7 And in the abundance of your glory you shattered the adversaries; you sent forth your wrath, and it devoured them like stubble.

 

8 And through the breath of your anger the water parted; the waters were fixed like a wall; the waves were fixed in the midst of the sea.

 

9 The enemy said: I will pursue and overtake, I will divide spoils, I will satisfy my soul, I will destroy with my sword, my hand shall dominate.

 

10 You sent forth your breath; the sea covered them; they sank like lead in mighty water.

 

11 Who is like you among the gods, O Lord? Who is like you, glorified among the holy ones, marvelous in glories, working wonders?

 

12 You stretched out your right hand; the earth swallowed them.

 

13 You guided by your righteousness this your people, whom you redeemed; you comforted them by your strength to your holy abode.

 

14 Nations heard and were angered; pangs seized those dwelling in Philistia.

 

15 Then the chiefs of Edom hastened, and the rulers of the Moabites—trembling seized them; all those dwelling in Canaan melted away.

 

16 May fear and trembling fall upon them; by the greatness of your arm let them be turned to stone, until your people pass by, O Lord, until this your people pass by, whom you acquired.

 

17 Bring them in and plant them in the mountain of your inheritance, in your prepared dwelling place, which you made, O Lord, a sanctuary, O Lord, which your hands prepared.

 

18 The Lord reigning forever and ever and still.

 

19 For the horse of Pharaoh went in with chariots and riders into the sea, and the Lord brought upon them the water of the sea; but the sons of Israel walked through dry land in the midst of the sea.

 

20 And Miriam the prophetess, the sister of Aaron, took the tambourine in her hand, and all the women went out after her with tambourines and dances,

 

21 and Miriam led them, saying: Let us sing to the Lord, for he has been gloriously glorified; horse and rider he has thrown into the sea.

 

22 Then Moses set out with the sons of Israel from the Red Sea and led them into the wilderness of Shur; and they journeyed three days in the wilderness and found no water to drink.

 

23 And they came to Marah, and they could not drink from Marah, for it was bitter; therefore the name of that place was called Bitterness.

 

24 And the people murmured against Moses, saying: What shall we drink?

 

25 And Moses cried out to the Lord; and the Lord showed him a piece of wood, and he cast it into the water, and the water was made sweet. There he established for him statutes and judgments, and there he tested him,

 

26 and he said: If you listen carefully to the voice of the Lord your God and do the things pleasing before him and give ear to his commandments and keep all his statutes, every disease that I brought upon the Egyptians I will not bring upon you; for I am the Lord who heals you.

 

27 And they came to Elim, and there were there twelve springs of water and seventy palm trunks; and they encamped there beside the waters.

 

Chapter 16

 

1 And they set out from Elim, and all the congregation of the sons of Israel came to the wilderness of Sin, which is between Elim and Sinai. And on the fifteenth day of the second month after their departure from the land of Egypt,

 

2 all the congregation of the sons of Israel murmured against Moses and Aaron,

 

3 and the sons of Israel said to them, "Would that we had died, struck by the Lord in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the pots of meat and ate bread to the full; for you have brought us out into this wilderness to kill all this congregation with hunger."

 

4 And the Lord said to Moses, "Behold, I will rain bread for you from heaven, and the people shall go out and gather the day's portion for each day, that I may test them, whether they will walk in my law or not.

 

5 And it shall be that on the sixth day they shall prepare whatever they bring in, and it shall be double what they gather each day for the day."

 

6 And Moses and Aaron said to all the congregation of the sons of Israel, "In the evening you shall know that the Lord has brought you out of the land of Egypt,

 

7 and in the morning you shall see the glory of the Lord, because he has heard your murmuring against God; but what are we, that you murmur against us?"

 

8 And Moses said, "When the Lord gives you in the evening meat to eat and bread in the morning to the full, because the Lord has heard your murmuring which you murmur against us, but what are we? For your murmuring is not against us, but against God."

 

9 And Moses said to Aaron, "Say to all the congregation of the sons of Israel, 'Come near before God, for he has heard your murmuring.'"

 

10 And while Aaron was speaking to all the congregation of the sons of Israel, they turned toward the wilderness, and the glory of the Lord appeared in a cloud.

 

11 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,

 

12 "I have heard the murmuring of the sons of Israel; speak to them, saying, 'Toward evening you shall eat meat, and in the morning you shall be filled with bread; and you shall know that I am the Lord your God.'"

 

13 And evening came, and quails came up and covered the camp; in the morning, as the dew settled around the camp,

 

14 behold, on the face of the wilderness there was a fine thing, like coriander, white, like frost upon the ground.

 

15 And when the sons of Israel saw it, they said one to another, "What is this?" For they did not know what it was. And Moses said to them, "This is the bread which the Lord has given you to eat.

 

16 This is the word which the Lord has commanded: 'Gather of it, each one what is proper for him, a gomor per head, according to the number of your souls; each of you gather it with your tentmates.'"

 

17 And the sons of Israel did so and gathered, some more and some less.

 

18 And when they measured with the gomor, he who had much had nothing over, and he who had little did not lack; each gathered what was proper for himself.

 

19 And Moses said to them, "Let no one leave any of it until morning."

 

20 But they did not listen to Moses, and some left part of it until morning; and it bred worms and stank; and Moses was embittered against them.

 

21 And they gathered it morning by morning, each what was proper for him; and when the sun grew hot, it melted.

 

22 And it came to pass on the sixth day that they gathered double what was needed, two gomor for each one; and all the rulers of the congregation came in and reported to Moses.

 

23 And Moses said to them, "This is the word which the Lord has spoken: 'Tomorrow is a sabbath, a holy rest to the Lord; whatever you would bake, bake, and whatever you would boil, boil; and all that is left over, lay it aside in store until morning.'"

 

24 And they left some of it until morning, as Moses had commanded them; and it did not stink, nor was there any worm in it.

 

25 And Moses said, "Eat today, for today is a sabbath to the Lord; it will not be found in the field.

 

26 Six days you shall gather it; but on the seventh day is a sabbath, for there will be none on it."

 

27 And it came to pass on the seventh day that some of the people went out to gather and found none.

 

28 And the Lord said to Moses, "How long do you refuse to heed my commandments and my law?

 

29 See, for the Lord has given you this day, the sabbath; therefore he himself has given you on the sixth day bread for two days; stay each of you in your houses; let no one go out of his place on the seventh day."

 

30 And the people kept the sabbath on the seventh day. 

 

31 And the sons of Israel called its name Man; and it was like coriander seed, white, and its taste like a wafer with honey.

 

32 And Moses said, "This is the word which the Lord has commanded: 'Fill the gomor with the man for keeping throughout your generations, that they may see the bread which you ate in the wilderness, when the Lord brought you out of the land of Egypt.'"

 

33 And Moses said to Aaron, "Take one golden jar and put into it a full gomor of the man, and you shall lay it up before God, to be kept for your generations."

 

34 As the Lord commanded Moses, so Aaron laid it up before the testimony, to be kept.

 

35 And the sons of Israel ate the man for forty years, until they came to inhabited land; they ate the man until they arrived at a region of Phoenicia.

 

36 Now the gomor was the tenth part of three measures.

 

Chapter 17

 

1 And the whole congregation of the children of Israel departed from the wilderness of Sin by their encampments, according to the word of the Lord, and they encamped in Raphidin; and there was no water for the people to drink.

 

2 And the people reviled Moses, saying, "Give us water, that we may drink." And Moses said to them, "Why do you revile me, and why do you tempt the Lord?"

 

3 And there the people thirsted for water, and there the people murmured against Moses, saying, "Why is this, that you brought us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our cattle with thirst?"

 

4 And Moses cried to the Lord, saying, "What shall I do with this people? Yet a little while and they will stone me."

 

5 And the Lord said to Moses, "Go before this people, and take with you some of the elders of the people; and take in your hand the rod with which you struck the river, and go.

 

6 Behold, I stand there before you upon the rock in Horeb; and you shall strike the rock, and water shall come out of it, and my people shall drink." And Moses did so before the children of Israel.

 

7 And he called the name of that place Temptation and Reviling, because of the reviling of the children of Israel, and because they tempted the Lord, saying, "Is the Lord among us or not?"

 

8 And Amalek came and made war against Israel in Raphidin.

 

9 And Moses said to Joshua, "Choose for yourself mighty men, and go out and set yourself in array against Amalek tomorrow; and behold, I stand upon the top of the hill, and the rod of God is in my hand."

 

10 And Joshua did as Moses said to him, and went out and set himself in array against Amalek; and Moses and Aaron and Hur went up to the top of the hill.

 

11 And it came to pass, when Moses lifted up his hands, Israel prevailed; but when he let down his hands, Amalek prevailed.

 

12 But the hands of Moses were heavy; and they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat upon it, and Aaron and Hur supported his hands, one on this side and one on that; and the hands of Moses were held steady until the setting of the sun.

 

13 And Joshua routed Amalek and all his people with the slaughter of the sword.

 

14 And the Lord said to Moses, "Write this for a memorial in a book, and put it into the ears of Joshua, that I will utterly blot out the memorial of Amalek from under heaven."

 

15 And Moses built an altar to the Lord, and called its name The Lord My Refuge;

 

16 for with a secret hand the Lord makes war upon Amalek from generation to generation.

 

Chapter 18

 

1 Now Jethro, the priest of Midian, the father-in-law of Moses, heard of all that the Lord had done for Israel, his own people; for the Lord had brought Israel out of Egypt.

 

2 And Jethro, the father-in-law of Moses, took Zipporah, Moses' wife, after she had been sent away,

 

3 and his two sons: the name of one of them was Gershom, saying, "I was a sojourner in a foreign land";

 

4 and the name of the second was Eliezer, saying, "For the God of my father is my helper, and he delivered me from the hand of Pharaoh."

 

5 And Jethro, the father-in-law of Moses, came out with his sons and his wife to Moses in the wilderness, where he was encamped at the mountain of God.

 

6 And it was reported to Moses, saying, "Behold, your father-in-law Jethro is coming to you, and your wife and your two sons with him."

 

7 And Moses went out to meet his father-in-law, and bowed down to him and kissed him, and they greeted one another; and he brought him into the tent.

 

8 And Moses recounted to his father-in-law all that the Lord had done to Pharaoh and the Egyptians for the sake of Israel, and all the hardship that had come upon them on the way, and that the Lord had delivered them from the hand of Pharaoh and from the hand of the Egyptians.

 

9 And Jethro was amazed at all the good things which the Lord had done for them, that he had delivered them from the hand of the Egyptians and from the hand of Pharaoh.

 

10 And Jethro said, "Blessed be the Lord, because he delivered his people from the hand of the Egyptians and from the hand of Pharaoh.

 

11 Now I know that the Lord is great above all gods, because of this, that they dealt insolently with them."

 

12 And Jethro, the father-in-law of Moses, took whole burnt offerings and sacrifices for God; and Aaron came, and all the elders of Israel, to eat bread with the father-in-law of Moses before God.

 

13 And it came to pass on the morrow that Moses sat to judge the people; and all the people stood by Moses from morning until evening.

 

14 And Jethro, seeing all that he was doing for the people, said, "What is this that you are doing for the people? Why do you sit alone, while all the people stand by you from morning until evening?"

 

15 And Moses said to his father-in-law, "The people come to me to seek judgment from God; 16 for whenever a dispute arises among them and they come to me, I decide between each of them, and I instruct them in the ordinances of God and his law."

 

17 And Moses' father-in-law said to him, "You are not doing this thing rightly.

 

18 You will be utterly worn out with unbearable weariness, both you and all this people who are with you; this thing is too heavy for you; you will not be able to do it alone.

 

19 Now therefore listen to me, and I will advise you, and God will be with you. Be for the people the things pertaining to God, and you shall bring their words to God,

 

20 and you shall testify to them the ordinances of God and his law, and you shall show them the ways in which they shall walk and the works they shall do.

 

21 And you, look out for yourself from all the people able men, fearing God, righteous men who hate arrogance, and you shall set them over the people as rulers of thousands, and rulers of hundreds, and rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens.

 

22 And they shall judge the people at all times; but the weighty matter they shall bring up to you, while the small judgments they shall judge themselves; and they shall lighten your burden and share the load with you.

 

23 If you do this thing, God will strengthen you, and you will be able to stand, and all this people will go to their own place in peace."

 

24 And Moses listened to the voice of his father-in-law and did all that he had said to him.

 

25 And Moses chose able men from all Israel and made them rulers over the people, rulers of thousands, and rulers of hundreds, and rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens.

 

26 And they judged the people at all times; every weighty matter they brought up to Moses, but every small matter they judged themselves.

 

27 And Moses sent away his father-in-law, and he departed to his own land.

 

Chapter 19

 

1 In the third month of the departure of the sons of Israel from the land of Egypt, on this day they came into the wilderness of Sinai.

 

2 And they set out from Raphidin and came into the wilderness of Sinai, and Israel encamped there opposite the mountain.

 

3 And Moses went up to the mountain of God; and God called him from the mountain, saying, "Thus shall you say to the house of Jacob and declare to the sons of Israel:

 

4 You yourselves have seen all that I have done to the Egyptians, and I took you up as on eagles' wings and brought you to myself.

 

5 And now, if you truly listen to my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be to me a people set apart from all the nations; for all the earth is mine;

 

6 and you shall be to me a royal priesthood and a holy nation. These words you shall speak to the sons of Israel."

 

7 And Moses came and called the elders of the people and set before them all these words which God had commanded him.

 

8 And all the people answered with one accord and said, "All that God has said we will do and obey." And Moses brought the words of the people up to God.

 

9 And the Lord said to Moses, "Behold, I am coming to you in a pillar of cloud, so that the people may hear me speaking to you and may believe you forever." And Moses reported the words of the people to the Lord.

 

10 And the Lord said to Moses, "Go down and solemnly charge the people, and purify them today and tomorrow, and let them wash their garments;

 

11 and let them be ready for the third day; for on the third day the Lord will come down upon Mount Sinai before all the people.

 

12 And you shall set bounds for the people round about, saying, 'Take heed to yourselves not to go up onto the mountain or touch any part of it; everyone who touches the mountain shall surely die.

 

13 No hand shall touch it; for he shall be stoned with stones or shot through with a dart; whether beast or man, it shall not live.' When the sounds and the trumpets and the cloud depart from the mountain, they shall go up onto the mountain."

 

14 And Moses went down from the mountain to the people and sanctified them, and they washed their garments.

 

15 And he said to the people, "Be ready for three days; do not go near a woman."

 

16 And it came to pass on the third day, toward dawn, that there were sounds and lightnings and a dark cloud upon Mount Sinai; the sound of the trumpet rang out loudly; and all the people in the camp were terrified.

 

17 And Moses led the people out of the camp to meet God, and they stood at the foot of the mountain.

 

18 And Mount Sinai was wholly wrapped in smoke, because God had descended upon it in fire, and the smoke rose up like the smoke of a furnace, and all the people were exceedingly amazed.

 

19 And the sounds of the trumpet grew ever much louder; Moses spoke, and God answered him with a voice.

 

20 And the Lord came down upon Mount Sinai, to the summit of the mountain; and the Lord called Moses to the summit of the mountain, and Moses went up.

 

21 And God spoke to Moses, saying, "Go down and solemnly charge the people, lest they draw near to God to gaze, and a multitude of them fall;

 

22 and let the priests who draw near to the Lord God be sanctified, lest the Lord depart from them."

 

23 And Moses said to God, "The people will not be able to come up to Mount Sinai; for you yourself have solemnly charged us, saying, 'Set bounds about the mountain and sanctify it.'"

 

24 And the Lord said to him, "Go, descend, and come up, you and Aaron with you; but let not the priests and the people force their way up to God, lest the Lord destroy some of them."

 

25 And Moses went down to the people and spoke to them.

 

Chapter 20

 

1 And the Lord spoke all these words, saying:

 

2 I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.

 

3 You shall have no other gods besides me.

 

4 You shall not make for yourself an idol, nor a likeness of anything, whatever is in heaven above and whatever is on the earth beneath and whatever is in the waters under the earth.

 

5 You shall not bow down to them nor serve them; for I am the Lord your God, a jealous God, repaying the sins of fathers upon children to the third and fourth generation to those who hate me,

 

6 and showing mercy to thousands to those who love me and keep my commandments. 

 

7 You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain; for the Lord will by no means hold guiltless the one who takes his name in vain.

 

8 Remember the day of the sabbaths, to keep it holy.

 

9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work;

 

10 but on the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God; on it you shall do no work, you and your son and your daughter, your male servant and your female servant, your ox and your beast of burden and every animal of yours, and the sojourner who dwells among you.

 

11 For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth and the sea and all that is in them, and he rested on the seventh day; therefore the Lord blessed the seventh day and hallowed it.

 

12 Honor your father and your mother, that it may be well with you, and that you may be long-lived upon the good land which the Lord your God gives you.

 

13 You shall not commit adultery.

 

14You shall not steal.

 

15 You shall not murder.

 

16 You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor with false testimony. —

 

17 You shall not covet your neighbor's wife. You shall not covet your neighbor's house, nor his field, nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his ox, nor his beast of burden, nor any animal of his, nor anything that belongs to your neighbor.

 

18 And all the people saw the voice and the flashes and the sound of the trumpet and the mountain smoking; and all the people, being afraid, stood far off.

 

19 And they said to Moses, "You speak to us, and let not God speak to us, lest we die."

 

20 And Moses says to them, "Take courage; for God has come to you in order to test you, so that the fear of him may be in you, that you may not sin."

 

21 And the people stood far off, but Moses entered into the darkness where God was.

 

22 And the Lord said to Moses, "Thus you shall say to the house of Jacob and declare to the sons of Israel: You yourselves have seen that I have spoken to you from heaven.

 

23 You shall not make for yourselves gods of silver, and gods of gold you shall not make for yourselves.

 

24 You shall make me an altar of earth, and you shall sacrifice on it your whole burnt offerings and your peace offerings, your sheep and your calves, in every place where I shall name my name there; and I will come to you and bless you.

 

25 But if you make me an altar of stones, you shall not build them hewn; for you have laid your tool upon them, and they are defiled.

 

26 You shall not go up by steps to my altar, so that you may not uncover your nakedness upon it."

 

Chapter 21

 

1 And these are the ordinances which you shall set before them.

 

2 If you acquire a Hebrew servant, he shall serve you six years; but in the seventh year he shall go out free for nothing.

 

3 If he came in alone, he shall also go out alone; but if a wife came in with him, his wife shall also go out with him.

 

4 But if his master gives him a wife, and she bears him sons or daughters, the wife and the children shall belong to his master, and he shall go out alone.

 

5 But if the servant answers and says, "I love my master and my wife and my children; I will not go away free,"

 

6 his master shall bring him to the judgment place of God, and then he shall bring him to the door, to the doorpost, and his master shall pierce his ear with an awl, and he shall serve him forever.

 

7 And if anyone sells his own daughter as a household servant, she shall not go out as the female slaves go away.

 

8 If she does not please her master, to whom she was pledged, he shall let her be redeemed; but he has no right to sell her to a foreign nation, because he has dealt treacherously with her.

 

9 And if he pledged her to his son, he shall deal with her according to the right of daughters.

 

10 And if he takes another for himself, he shall not deprive her of her necessities and her clothing and her marital association.

 

11 And if he does not do these three things for her, she shall go out for nothing, without money.

 

12 And if anyone strikes another and he dies, let him surely be put to death;

 

13 but if it was not willful, but God delivered him into his hands, I will give you a place to which the slayer shall flee.

 

14 But if anyone sets upon his neighbor to kill him by treachery and takes refuge, you shall take him from my altar to put him to death.

 

15 Whoever strikes his father or his mother, let him surely be put to death.

 

16 He who speaks evil of his father or his mother shall die the death.

 

17 Whoever steals one of the sons of Israel, and having oppressed him sells him, and he is found in his possession, let him die the death.

 

18 And if two men quarrel and one strikes his neighbor with a stone or with his fist, and he does not die but is laid up in bed,

 

19 if the man rises and walks about outside with a staff, the one who struck shall be guiltless; only he shall pay for his loss of time and his medical expenses.

 

20 And if anyone strikes his male servant or his female servant with a rod, and the servant dies under his hands, let him be avenged by judgment.

 

21 But if the servant survives one day or two, he shall not be avenged, for he is his money.

 

22 And if two men fight and strike a pregnant woman, and her child comes out not fully formed, he shall surely be fined; according as the woman's husband imposes, he shall pay with what is fitting.

 

23 But if it was fully formed, he shall give life for life,

 

24 eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot,

 

25 burn for burn, wound for wound, stripe for stripe.

 

26 And if anyone strikes the eye of his male servant or the eye of his maidservant and blinds it, he shall send them away free in exchange for their eye.

 

27 And if he knocks out the tooth of his male servant or the tooth of his maidservant, he shall send them away free in exchange for their tooth.

 

28 And if a bull gores a man or a woman, and that person dies, the bull shall be stoned with stones, and its flesh shall not be eaten; but the owner of the bull shall be guiltless.

 

29 But if the bull was accustomed to gore before yesterday and the day before, and they have testified to its owner, and he did not destroy it, and it kills a man or a woman, the bull shall be stoned, and its owner shall also be put to death.

 

30 But if a ransom is imposed on him, he shall pay as ransom for his life whatever they impose on him.

 

31 And if it gores a son or a daughter, they shall do to him according to this ordinance.

 

32 And if the bull gores a male servant or a female servant, he shall give thirty didrachmas of silver to their master, and the bull shall be stoned.

 

33 And if anyone opens a pit or hews out a pit and does not cover it, and a calf or a donkey falls in there,

 

34 the owner of the pit shall make restitution; he shall give money to their owner, but the dead animal shall be his.

 

35 And if anyone's bull gores his neighbor's bull, and it dies, they shall sell the living bull and divide the money for it, and they shall divide the dead bull.

 

36 But if the bull was known to be accustomed to gore before yesterday and the day before, and they had testified to its owner, and he did not destroy it, he shall repay bull for bull, but the dead one shall be his.

 

37 And if anyone steals a calf or a sheep and slaughters or sells it, he shall repay five calves for the calf and four sheep for the sheep.

 

Chapter 22

 

1 If the thief is found breaking in and is struck and dies, there is no bloodguilt for him;

 

2 but if the sun has risen upon him, he is guilty; he shall die in return. And if he has nothing, let him be sold for his theft.

 

3 But if he is caught, and the stolen thing is found in his hand alive, whether donkey or sheep, he shall repay them double.

 

4 If anyone grazes down a field or a vineyard and lets his beast loose to graze down another's field, he shall make restitution from his own field according to its produce; but if he grazes down the whole field, he shall repay from the best of his field and the best of his vineyard.

 

5 If fire breaks out and finds thorns and burns up a threshing floor or standing grain or a field, the one who kindled the fire shall make restitution.

 

6 If anyone gives his neighbor money or goods to keep, and it is stolen from the man's house, if the thief is found, he shall repay double;

 

7 but if the thief is not found, the master of the house shall come before God and shall swear that he has surely not done wrong concerning the whole of his neighbor's deposit.

 

8 For every alleged wrongdoing, concerning calf and beast of burden and sheep and garment and every loss that is charged, whatever it may be, the judgment of both parties shall come before God, and the one convicted through God shall repay double to his neighbor.

 

9 If anyone gives his neighbor a beast of burden or a calf or a sheep or any animal to keep, and it is injured or dies or is carried off, and no one knows,

 

10 there shall be an oath of God between the two, that he has surely not done wrong concerning the whole of his neighbor's deposit; and its owner shall accept this, and he shall not make restitution.

 

11 But if it is stolen from him, he shall repay the owner.

 

12 If it is torn by wild beasts, he shall bring him to the prey, and he shall not make restitution.

 

13 If anyone borrows from his neighbor, and it is injured or dies or is carried off, and the owner is not with it, he shall make restitution;

 

14 but if the owner is with it, he shall not make restitution; and if it was hired, it shall count for him in place of his hire.

 

15 If anyone seduces a virgin who is not betrothed and lies with her, he shall surely endow her with a dowry as his wife.

 

16 But if her father utterly refuses and is unwilling to give her to him as a wife, he shall pay money to the father according to the amount of the dowry for virgins. —

 

17 You shall not preserve sorcerers alive.

 

18 Everyone who lies with a beast, you shall put them to death. 

 

19 He who sacrifices to gods shall be utterly destroyed by death, except to the Lord alone.

 

20 And you shall not mistreat a sojourner nor oppress him; for you were sojourners in the land of Egypt.

 

21 You shall not mistreat any widow or orphan;

 

22 but if you mistreat them with evil and they cry out to me, I will surely hear their voice,

 

23 and I will be angered with wrath and will kill you with the sword, and your wives shall be widows and your children orphans. 

 

24 If you lend money to the poor brother beside you, you shall not press him hard, you shall not lay interest upon him.

 

25 If you take your neighbor's garment as a pledge, you shall return it to him before the setting of the sun;

 

26 for this is his covering, this alone is the garment of his nakedness; in what shall he sleep? So if he cries out to me, I will hear him; for I am merciful.

 

27 You shall not revile gods, nor speak evil of the rulers of your people.

 

28 You shall not delay the firstfruits of your threshing floor and your winepress; the firstborn of your sons you shall give to me.

 

29 So shall you do with your calf and your sheep and your beast of burden: seven days it shall be with its mother, and on the eighth day you shall give it to me.

 

30 And you shall be holy men to me. And you shall not eat flesh torn by wild beasts; throw it to the dog.

 

Chapter 23

 

1 You shall not receive a vain report. You shall not consent with the unjust man to become an unjust witness.

 

2 You shall not be with the majority for evil. You shall not join with the multitude to turn aside with the majority so as to pervert judgment.

 

3 And you shall not show pity to a poor man in judgment.

 

4 And if you meet your enemy's ox or his beast of burden wandering, you shall turn them back and restore them to him.

 

5 And if you see your enemy's beast of burden fallen under its load, you shall not pass it by, but shall raise it up together with him.

 

6 You shall not pervert the judgment of a poor man in his cause.

 

7 You shall keep far from every unjust matter; you shall not kill the innocent and the just, and you shall not justify the ungodly for the sake of gifts.

 

8 And you shall not take gifts, for gifts blind the eyes of those who see and corrupt just words.

 

9 And you shall not oppress a stranger, for you know the soul of the stranger, for you yourselves were strangers in the land of Egypt.

 

10 Six years you shall sow your land and gather in its produce;

 

11 but in the seventh you shall make a release and let it lie fallow, and the poor of your nation shall eat, and what is left the wild beasts shall eat. Thus you shall do with your vineyard and your olive grove.

 

12 Six days you shall do your works, but on the seventh day there shall be rest, so that your ox and your beast of burden may rest, and so that the son of your maidservant and the stranger may be refreshed.

 

13 All that I have said to you, observe. And you shall not call to mind the name of other gods, nor shall it be heard from your mouth.

 

14 Three times in the year keep a feast to me.

 

15 Take care to keep the feast of unleavened bread; seven days you shall eat unleavened bread, as I commanded you, at the season of the month of new things, for in it you came out of Egypt. You shall not appear before me empty-handed.

 

16 And you shall keep a feast of the harvest of the firstfruits of your labors, whatever you sow in your field, and a feast of completion at the end of the year, at the gathering in of your labors from your field.

 

17 Three times in the year every male of yours shall appear before the Lord your God.

 

18 For when I cast out nations from before your face and enlarge your borders, you shall not offer the blood of my sacrifice with leaven, nor shall the fat of my feast remain until morning.

 

19 The firstfruits of the first produce of your land you shall bring into the house of the Lord your God. You shall not boil a lamb in its mother's milk.

 

20 And behold, I am sending my messenger before your face, that he may guard you on the way, so that he may bring you into the land that I have prepared for you.

 

21 Take heed to yourself and listen to him and do not disobey him; for he will not hold back from you, for my name is upon him.

 

22 If you carefully listen to my voice and do all that I command you, and keep my covenant, you shall be to me a people set apart from all the nations; for all the earth is mine, and you shall be to me a royal priesthood and a holy nation. These words you shall speak to the sons of Israel: If you carefully listen to my voice and do all that I say to you, I will be an enemy to your enemies and I will oppose those who oppose you.

 

23 For my messenger shall go, leading you, and shall bring you to the Amorite and Hittite and Perizzite and Canaanite and Girgashite and Hivite and Jebusite, and I will destroy them.

 

24 You shall not bow down to their gods, nor serve them; you shall not do according to their works, but you shall utterly demolish and thoroughly shatter their pillars.

 

25 And you shall serve the Lord your God, and I will bless your bread and your wine and your water, and I will turn away sickness from you.

 

26 There shall be no one childless or barren in your land; I will fulfill the number of your days.

 

27 And I will send terror ahead of you as your leader, and I will throw into confusion all the nations into whom you enter, and I will make all your adversaries flee.

 

28 And I will send hornets before you, and they shall drive out the Amorites and the Hivites and the Canaanites and the Hittites from before you.

 

29 I will not drive them out in one year, lest the land become desolate and the beasts of the land multiply against you.

 

30 Little by little I will drive them out from before you, until you increase and inherit the land.

 

31 And I will set your borders from the Red Sea to the sea of the Philistines, and from the wilderness to the great river Euphrates; and I will deliver into your hands those who dwell in the land, and I will drive them out from before you.

 

32 You shall not make a covenant with them and with their gods,

 

33 and they shall not dwell in your land, lest they make you sin against me; for if you serve their gods, these will be a stumbling block to you.

 

Chapter 24

 

1 And to Moses he said, "Come up to the Lord, you and Aaron and Nadab and Abihu and seventy of the elders of Israel, and they shall worship the Lord from afar.

 

2 And Moses alone shall draw near to God, but they shall not draw near; and the people shall not go up with them."

 

3 And Moses went in and recounted to the people all the words of God and the ordinances; and all the people answered with one voice, saying, "All the words which the Lord has spoken we will do and we will hearken."

 

4 And Moses wrote down all the words of the Lord. And Moses, rising early in the morning, built an altar beneath the mountain, and twelve stones for the twelve tribes of Israel.

 

5 And he sent forth the young men of the sons of Israel, and they offered up whole burnt offerings and sacrificed a sacrifice of salvation to God; young calves.

 

6 And Moses, taking half of the blood, poured it into bowls, and half of the blood he poured out against the altar.

 

7 And taking the book of the covenant, he read it into the ears of the people, and they said, "All that the Lord has spoken we will do and we will hearken."

 

8 And Moses, taking the blood, sprinkled it upon the people and said, "Behold the blood of the covenant which the Lord has made with you concerning all these words."

 

9 And Moses went up, and Aaron and Nadab and Abihu and seventy of the council of elders of Israel,

 

10 and they saw the place where the God of Israel stood; and what was beneath his feet was like a work of sapphire brick, and like the appearance of the firmament of heaven in purity.

 

11 And of the chosen men of Israel not even one perished; and they appeared in the place of God, and they ate and drank.

 

12 And the Lord said to Moses, "Come up to me onto the mountain and be there, and I will give you the stone tablets, the law and the commandments, which I have written to give them as laws."

 

13 And Moses arose, and Joshua who attended him, and they went up onto the mountain of God.

 

14 And to the elders they said, "Remain quiet here until we return to you; and behold, Aaron and Hur are with you; if a matter of judgment arises for anyone, let them go to them."

 

15 And Moses and Joshua went up onto the mountain, and the cloud covered the mountain.

 

16 And the glory of God came down upon Mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it for six days; and the Lord called Moses on the seventh day out of the midst of the cloud.

 

17 And the appearance of the glory of the Lord was like a blazing fire upon the summit of the mountain before the sons of Israel.

 

18 And Moses entered into the midst of the cloud and went up onto the mountain, and he was there on the mountain forty days and forty nights.

 

Chapter 25

 

1 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying:

 

2 Speak to the sons of Israel, and take for me first-fruits from all to whom it seems good in their heart, and you shall receive my first-fruits.

 

3 And this is the first-fruit which you shall receive from them: gold and silver and bronze,

 

4 and blue and purple and double scarlet and twisted fine linen and goats' hair,

 

5 and rams' skins dyed red and blue skins and incorruptible wood,

 

7 and sardius stones and stones for the engraving, for the shoulder-piece and the full-length robe.

 

8 And you shall make me a sanctuary, and I will appear among you.

 

9 And you shall make for me according to all that I show you on the mountain—the pattern of the tabernacle and the pattern of all its vessels; so shall you make it.

 

10 And you shall make an ark of testimony of incorruptible wood, two and a half cubits in length, and a cubit and a half in breadth, and a cubit and a half in height.

 

11 And you shall overlay it with pure gold; outside and inside you shall gild it; and you shall make for it golden twisted mouldings round about.

 

12 And you shall forge for it four golden rings and set them on the four sides, two rings on the one side and two rings on the second side.

 

13 And you shall make carrying-poles of incorruptible wood and overlay them with gold;

 

14 and you shall insert the poles into the rings on the sides of the ark, so as to carry the ark by them;

 

15 the poles shall remain unmoved in the rings of the ark.

 

16 And you shall put into the ark the testimonies which I shall give you.

 

17 And you shall make a mercy-seat, a cover of pure gold, two and a half cubits in length and a cubit and a half in breadth.

 

18 And you shall make two cherubim of chased gold, and you shall set them on both sides of the mercy-seat;

 

19 they shall be made, one cherub from this side and one cherub from the second side of the mercy-seat; and you shall make the two cherubim on the two sides.

 

20 The cherubim shall be stretching out their wings above, overshadowing the mercy-seat with their wings, and their faces toward one another; the faces of the cherubim shall be toward the mercy-seat.

 

21 And you shall set the mercy-seat on the ark above; and into the ark you shall put the testimonies which I shall give you.

 

22 And I will make myself known to you from there, and I will speak to you from above the mercy-seat, between the two cherubim that are upon the ark of testimony, even according to all that I command you concerning the sons of Israel.

 

23 And you shall make a table of pure gold, two cubits in length, a cubit in width, and a cubit and a half in height.

 

24 And you shall make for it twisted golden mouldings round about.

 

25 And you shall make for it a rim of a handbreadth round about; and you shall make a twisted moulding for the rim round about.

 

26 And you shall make four golden rings, and set the rings on the four parts of its feet,

 

27 under the rim; and the rings shall be as holders for the poles, so as to carry the table by them.

 

28 And you shall make the poles of incorruptible wood, and overlay them with pure gold, and the table shall be carried by them.

 

29 And you shall make its dishes and its censers and its libation-bowls and its ladles, with which you shall pour libations; of pure gold you shall make them.

 

30 And you shall set upon the table loaves of presence before me continually.

 

31 And you shall make a lampstand of pure gold; you shall make the lampstand of chased work; its shaft and the branches and the bowls and the knobs and the lilies shall be of one piece with it.

 

32 And six branches going out from the sides: three branches of the lampstand from its one side and three branches of the lampstand from the second side.

 

33 And three bowls fashioned like little nuts on the one branch, a knob and a lily; so for the six branches going out from the lampstand.

 

34 And on the lampstand four bowls fashioned like little nuts; on the one branch the knobs and its lilies.

 

35 The knob under the two branches out of it, and a knob under the four branches out of it; so for the six branches going out from the lampstand.

 

36 The knobs and the branches shall be of one piece with it; the whole shall be chased work of one piece of pure gold.

 

37 And you shall make its lamps, seven; and you shall set on the lamps, and they shall give light from one direction.

 

38 And its funnel and its stands you shall make of pure gold.

 

39 All these vessels shall be a talent of pure gold.

 

40 See that you make them according to the pattern shown you on the mountain.

 

Chapter 26

 

1 And you shall make the tabernacle of ten curtains of twisted fine linen and of blue and purple and twisted scarlet; you shall make them with cherubim, the work of a weaver.

 

2 The length of the one curtain shall be twenty-eight cubits, and the breadth of the one curtain four cubits: the same measure shall be for all the curtains.

 

3 And five curtains shall be joined one to another, the one to the other, and five curtains shall be joined together, one to the other.

 

4 And you shall make for them loops of blue upon the edge of the one curtain, on the one side at the joining; and so shall you make on the edge of the outer curtain at the second joining.

 

5 Fifty loops shall you make for the one curtain, and fifty loops shall you make on the side of the curtain at the joining of the second; the loops facing each other, corresponding one to another at each point.

 

6 And you shall make fifty golden rings, and you shall join the curtains one to another with the rings, and the tabernacle shall be one.

 

7 And you shall make skins of hair as a covering over the tabernacle; eleven skins shall you make them.

 

8 The length of the one skin shall be thirty cubits, and four cubits the breadth of the one skin: the same measure shall be for the eleven skins.

 

9 And you shall join the five skins together, and the six skins together; and you shall double over the sixth skin at the front of the tabernacle.

 

10 And you shall make fifty loops on the edge of the one skin, which is in the middle at the joining, and fifty loops shall you make on the edge of the skin that joins the second.

 

11 And you shall make fifty bronze rings, and you shall join the rings from the loops, and you shall join the skins together, and it shall be one.

 

12 And you shall fasten underneath the excess in the skins of the tabernacle; with the half of the skin that is left over you shall cover underneath, the excess of the skins of the tabernacle you shall cover underneath behind the tabernacle.

 

13 A cubit on this side and a cubit on that side, out of what remains over of the skins, from the length of the skins of the tabernacle, shall be covering over the sides of the tabernacle on this side and on that, that it may cover it.

 

14 And you shall make a covering for the tabernacle of rams' skins dyed red, and coverings above of blue skins.

 

15 And you shall make pillars for the tabernacle of incorruptible wood.

 

16 Of ten cubits shall you make the one pillar, and one cubit and a half the breadth of the one pillar.

 

17 Two joints for the one pillar, answering one to the other: so shall you do to all the pillars of the tabernacle.

 

18 And you shall make pillars for the tabernacle, twenty pillars on the side toward the north.

 

19 And you shall make forty silver bases for the twenty pillars, two bases for the one pillar on both its sides, and two bases for the one pillar on both its sides.

 

20 And for the second side, that toward the south, twenty pillars;

 

21 and their forty bases of silver, two bases for the one pillar on both its sides, and two bases for the one pillar on both its sides.

 

22 And at the back of the tabernacle, on the part toward the sea, you shall make six pillars.

 

23 And you shall make two pillars at the corners of the tabernacle at the back,

 

24 and they shall be equal from below; in like manner they shall be equal from the tops, into one joining: so shall you do to both; let them be for the two corners.

 

25 And there shall be eight pillars, and their silver bases sixteen; two bases for the one pillar on both its sides, and two bases for the one pillar.

 

26 And you shall make bars of incorruptible wood, five for the one pillar on the one side of the tabernacle,

 

27 and five bars for the pillar on the second side of the tabernacle, and five bars for the pillar at the back, on the side of the tabernacle toward the sea.

 

28 And let the middle bar pass through in the midst of the pillars from the one side to the other side.

 

29 And you shall gild the pillars with gold, and you shall make the rings of gold, into which you shall put the bars, and you shall gild the bars with gold.

 

30 And you shall set up the tabernacle according to the pattern shown to you on the mountain.

 

31 And you shall make a veil of blue and purple and twisted scarlet and spun fine linen: you shall make it woven work with cherubim.

 

32 And you shall set it upon four pillars of incorruptible wood, gilded with gold; and their tops shall be of gold, and their four bases of silver.

 

33 And you shall put the veil upon the pillars, and you shall bring in there, within the veil, the ark of the testimony; and the veil shall make a division for you between the holy place and the holy of holies.

 

34 And you shall cover with the veil the ark of the testimony in the holy of holies.

 

35 And you shall set the table outside the veil, and the lampstand opposite the table on the side of the tabernacle toward the south; and you shall set the table on the side of the tabernacle toward the north.

 

36 And you shall make a screen of blue and purple and twisted scarlet and twisted fine linen, the work of an embroiderer.

 

37 And you shall make for the veil five pillars, and you shall gild them with gold, and their tops shall be of gold, and you shall cast for them five bronze bases.

 

Chapter 27

 

1 And you shall make an altar of incorruptible wood, five cubits in length and five cubits in breadth — the altar shall be square and its height three cubits.

 

2 And you shall make the horns upon the four corners; the horns shall be of one piece with it; and you shall overlay them with bronze.

 

3 And you shall make a rim for the altar, and its cover and its bowls and its flesh-hooks and its firepan; and all its vessels you shall make of bronze.

 

4 And you shall make for it a grate of bronze in network fashion; and you shall make for the grate four bronze rings upon the four sides.

 

5 And you shall put them under the grate of the altar, beneath; and the grate shall reach to the middle of the altar.

 

6 And you shall make for the altar poles of incorruptible wood, and you shall overlay them with bronze.

 

7 And you shall insert the poles into the rings, and the poles shall be along the sides of the altar when it is carried.

 

8 You shall make it hollow, of boards; according to what was shown you on the mountain, so shall you make it.

 

9 And you shall make a court for the tabernacle: on the side toward the southwest, hangings for the court of twisted fine linen, a hundred cubits in length for the one side;

 

10 and their pillars twenty, and their bases twenty, of bronze, and their rings and their clasps of silver.

 

11 Likewise on the side toward the east, hangings a hundred cubits in length; and their pillars twenty, and their bases twenty, of bronze, and the rings and the clasps of the pillars, and their bases, overlaid with silver.

 

12 And the breadth of the court toward the sea, hangings of fifty cubits: their pillars ten, and their bases ten.

 

13 And the breadth of the court toward the south, hangings of fifty cubits: their pillars ten, and their bases ten.

 

14 And the height of the hangings on the one side shall be fifteen cubits: their pillars three, and their bases three.

 

15 And on the second side, the height of the hangings fifteen cubits: their pillars three, and their bases three.

 

16 And for the gate of the court a covering, twenty cubits in height, of blue and purple and scarlet spun, and fine linen twisted, with the embroidery of the needleworker: their pillars four, and their bases four.

 

17 All the pillars of the court round about overlaid with silver, and their capitals of silver, and their bases of bronze.

 

18 And the length of the court a hundred by a hundred, and the breadth fifty by fifty, and the height five cubits, of twisted fine linen, and their bases of bronze.

 

19 And all the furnishing and all the implements and the pegs of the court, of bronze.

 

20 And do you command the sons of Israel, and let them take for you pure oil of olives, without sediment, beaten, for the light, to burn, that a lamp may burn continually.

 

21 In the tabernacle of witness, outside the veil that is over the covenant, Aaron and his sons shall burn it from evening until morning before the Lord: a perpetual ordinance throughout your generations from the sons of Israel.

 

Chapter 28

 

1 And you, bring near to yourself both Aaron your brother and his sons from among the sons of Israel, to serve me as priests: Aaron and Nadab and Abiud and Eleazar and Ithamar, the sons of Aaron.

 

2 And you shall make a holy garment for Aaron your brother, for honor and glory.

 

3 And you, speak to all who are wise in understanding, whom I have filled with a spirit of perception, and they shall make the holy garment of Aaron for the sanctuary, in which he shall serve me as priest.

 

4 And these are the garments which they shall make: the breastpiece and the shoulder-garment and the full-length robe and a fringed tunic and a turban and a sash; and they shall make holy garments for Aaron and his sons, for serving me as priests.

 

5 And they shall take the gold and the blue and the purple and the scarlet and the fine linen.

 

6 And they shall make the shoulder-garment of twisted fine linen, woven work of an embroiderer.

 

7 It shall have two shoulder-pieces joining it, one to the other, fastened at the two sides.

 

8 And the woven work of the shoulder-pieces, which is on it, shall be of one piece with it according to its workmanship: of gold and blue and purple and spun scarlet and twisted fine linen.

 

9 And you shall take the two stones, stones of emerald, and you shall engrave on them the names of the sons of Israel,

 

10 six names on the one stone and the remaining six names on the second stone, according to their generations.

 

11 A work of the stone-cutter's craft, an engraving of a seal: you shall engrave the two stones with the names of the sons of Israel.

 

12 And you shall put the two stones on the shoulders of the shoulder-garment; they are stones of memorial for the sons of Israel; and Aaron shall bear the names of the sons of Israel before the Lord on his two shoulders, a memorial for them.

 

13 And you shall make small shields of pure gold;

 

14 and you shall make two fringed pieces of pure gold, intermingled with flowers, a work of braiding; and you shall put the braided fringed pieces on the small shields at their shoulder-straps in front.

 

15 And you shall make a breastpiece of judgments, the work of an embroiderer; after the pattern of the shoulder-garment you shall make it; of gold and blue and purple and twisted scarlet and twisted fine linen you shall make it.

 

16 It shall be square, doubled, a span in length and a span in width.

 

17 And you shall weave into it a woven texture set with stones in four rows. A row of stones shall be: carnelian, topaz, and emerald, the first row;

 

18 and the second row: carbuncle and sapphire and jasper;

 

19 and the third row: ligure, agate, and amethyst;

 

20 and the fourth row: chrysolite and beryl and onyx; covered with gold, let them be bound together in gold according to their row.

 

21 And let the stones be from the names of the sons of Israel, twelve according to their names; engravings of seals, each according to his name, let them be for the twelve tribes.

 

22 And you shall make on the breastpiece braided fringes, chainwork of pure gold.

 

29 And Aaron shall bear the names of the sons of Israel on the breastpiece of judgment upon his chest, when he enters the sanctuary, a memorial before God.

 

29a And you shall put the fringes on the breastpiece of judgment; the chainwork you shall put on both sides of the breastpiece, and the two small shields you shall put on both shoulders of the shoulder-garment, in front.

 

30 And you shall put on the breastpiece of judgment the Manifestation and the Truth, and it shall be on Aaron's chest whenever he enters the sanctuary before the Lord; and Aaron shall bear the judgments of the sons of Israel on his chest before the Lord continually.

 

31 And you shall make an under-robe reaching to the feet, all of blue.

 

32 And its opening shall be in the middle of it, having a border round about the opening, the work of a weaver, the joining woven together of one piece with it, so that it may not be torn.

 

33 And you shall make on the hem of the under-robe below, as of a pomegranate in flower, little pomegranates of blue and purple and spun scarlet and twisted fine linen, on the hem of the under-robe round about; and of the same form, golden little pomegranates and bells between them round about:

 

34 beside a golden little pomegranate a bell and a flower, on the hem of the under-robe round about.

 

35 And its sound shall be heard on Aaron when he ministers, as he enters the sanctuary before the Lord and as he goes out, so that he may not die.

 

36 And you shall make a plate of pure gold, and you shall impress on it, an impression of a seal: "Holiness of the Lord."

 

37 And you shall put it on twisted blue, and it shall be on the headdress; it shall be at the front of the headdress.

 

38 And it shall be on Aaron's forehead, and Aaron shall take away the sins of the holy things, whatever the sons of Israel consecrate, of every gift of their holy things; and it shall be on Aaron's forehead continually, acceptable for them before the Lord.

 

39 And the fringes of the tunics shall be of fine linen; and you shall make a turban of fine linen, and you shall make a sash, the work of an embroiderer.

 

40 And for the sons of Aaron you shall make tunics and sashes, and you shall make turbans for them, for honor and glory.

 

41 And you shall put them on Aaron your brother and his sons with him; and you shall anoint them and fill their hands and consecrate them, so that they may serve me as priests.

 

42 And you shall make for them linen breeches to cover the shame of their flesh; they shall reach from the loins to the thighs.

 

43 And Aaron shall have them, and his sons, whenever they enter the tent of witness or whenever they approach to minister at the altar of the sanctuary, and they shall not bring sin upon themselves, so that they may not die: a perpetual statute for him and for his seed after him.

 

Chapter 29

 

1 And these are the things that you shall do to them to consecrate them so that they may serve me as priests. You shall take one young calf from the cattle and two rams without blemish,

 

2 and unleavened bread kneaded with oil and unleavened wafers anointed with oil; you shall make them of fine wheat flour.

 

3 And you shall put them in one basket and bring them in the basket, along with the calf and the two rams.

 

4 And you shall bring Aaron and his sons to the doors of the tent of witness and wash them with water.

 

5 And taking the garments, you shall clothe Aaron your brother with the full-length tunic and the ephod and the oracle, and you shall fasten the oracle to the ephod for him.

 

6 And you shall put the headdress on his head and place the plate, the Holy Thing, upon the headdress.

 

7 And you shall take some of the oil of anointing and pour it on his head and anoint him.

 

8 And you shall bring his sons and clothe them with tunics,

 

9 and gird them with the sashes and put the caps on them, and the priesthood shall be theirs for me forever. And you shall fill the hands of Aaron and the hands of his sons.

 

10 And you shall bring the calf to the doors of the tent of witness, and Aaron and his sons shall lay their hands on the head of the calf before the Lord by the doors of the tent of witness.

 

11 And you shall slaughter the calf before the Lord by the doors of the tent of witness.

 

12 And you shall take some of the blood of the calf and put it on the horns of the altar with your finger; but all the remaining blood you shall pour out at the base of the altar.

 

13 And you shall take all the fat that is on the belly and the lobe of the liver and the two kidneys and the fat that is on them, and place them on the altar.

 

14 But the flesh of the calf and the skin and the dung you shall burn with fire outside the camp, for it is for sin.

 

15 And you shall take the one ram, and Aaron and his sons shall lay their hands on the head of the ram.

 

16 And you shall slaughter it, and taking the blood, you shall pour it against the altar all around.

 

17 And you shall cut the ram into pieces limb by limb, and wash the entrails and the feet with water, and place them on the pieces together with the head.

 

18 And you shall offer up the whole ram on the altar as a whole burnt offering to the Lord, for a fragrant odor; it is a sacrifice to the Lord.

 

19 And you shall take the second ram, and Aaron and his sons shall lay their hands on the head of the ram.

 

20 And you shall slaughter it and take some of its blood and put it on the lobe of Aaron's right ear and on the tip of his right hand and on the tip of his right foot, and on the lobes of the right ears of his sons and on the tips of their right hands and on the tips of their right feet.

 

21 And you shall take some of the blood that is from the altar and some of the oil of anointing and sprinkle it on Aaron and on his garment and on his sons and on the garments of his sons with him, and he shall be consecrated, both he and his garment and his sons and the garments of his sons with him; but the blood of the ram you shall pour against the altar all around.

 

22 And you shall take from the ram its fat and the fat covering the belly and the lobe of the liver and the two kidneys and the fat on them and the right shoulder — for this is a consecration

 

23 and one loaf of bread made with oil and one wafer from the basket of unleavened bread that has been set out before the Lord,

 

24 and you shall place all these things on the hands of Aaron and on the hands of his sons, and you shall set them apart as a set-apart offering before the Lord.

 

25 And you shall take them from their hands and offer them up on the altar of the whole burnt offering as a fragrant odor before the Lord; it is an offering to the Lord.

 

26 And you shall take the breast from the ram of consecration, which is Aaron's, and you shall set it apart as a set-apart offering before the Lord, and it shall be yours as a portion.

 

27 And you shall consecrate the breast, the set-apart offering, and the shoulder of the offering that has been set apart and taken from the ram of consecration, from Aaron and from his sons,

 

28 and it shall be for Aaron and his sons a perpetual statute from the sons of Israel; for this is an offering, and it shall be an offering from the sons of Israel, from the sacrifices of deliverance of the sons of Israel, an offering to the Lord.

 

29 And the garment of the sanctuary that is Aaron's shall belong to his sons after him, for them to be anointed in them and to fill their hands.

 

30 For seven days the priest from among his sons who succeeds him, who enters the tent of witness to minister in the holy places, shall wear them.

 

31 And you shall take the ram of consecration and boil the flesh in a holy place,

 

32 and Aaron and his sons shall eat the flesh of the ram and the loaves in the basket by the doors of the tent of witness.

 

33 They shall eat the things by which they were consecrated in them, to fill their hands, to consecrate them; and no stranger shall eat of them, for they are holy.

 

34 And if any of the flesh of the sacrifice of consecration or of the loaves is left until morning, you shall burn what remains with fire; it shall not be eaten, for it is a holy thing.

 

35 And you shall do thus for Aaron and his sons according to all that I have commanded you; for seven days you shall fill their hands.

 

36 And you shall offer the calf of sin on the day of purification, and you shall purify the altar when you consecrate upon it, and you shall anoint it so as to consecrate it.

 

37 For seven days you shall purify the altar and consecrate it, and the altar shall be most holy; everyone who touches the altar shall be consecrated.

 

38 And these are the things you shall offer on the altar: two unblemished lambs a year old, daily upon the altar continually, a perpetual offering.

 

39 The one lamb you shall offer in the morning, and the second lamb you shall offer toward evening;

 

40 and a tenth measure of fine flour kneaded with a fourth of a hin of beaten oil, and a drink offering, a fourth of a hin of wine, for the one lamb.

 

41 And the second lamb you shall offer toward evening; according to the morning sacrifice and according to its drink offering you shall offer it, for a fragrant odor, an offering to the Lord,

 

42 a perpetual sacrifice throughout your generations at the doors of the tent of witness before the Lord, in which I will make myself known to you there so as to speak to you.

 

43 And there I will give orders to the sons of Israel, and I will be sanctified in my glory.

 

44 And I will consecrate the tent of witness and the altar; and Aaron and his sons I will consecrate to serve me as priests.

 

45 And I will be invoked among the sons of Israel and will be their God,

 

46 and they shall know that I am the Lord their God, who brought them out of the land of Egypt, to be invoked by them and to be their God.

 

Chapter 30

 

1 And you shall make an altar of incense from decay-resistant wood; and you shall make it

 

2 a cubit in length and a cubit in breadth, it shall be square, and two cubits in height; its horns shall be of one piece with it.

 

3 And you shall overlay them with pure gold, its grate and its walls all around and its horns, and you shall make for it a twisted golden crown all around.

 

4 And you shall make two rings of pure gold beneath its twisted crown, on the two sides you shall make them, on the two flanks; and they shall be holders for the poles, so as to carry it by them.

 

5 And you shall make poles of decay-resistant wood and overlay them with gold.

 

6 And you shall place it opposite the veil that is over the ark of the testimonies, where I shall make myself known to you from there.

 

7 And Aaron shall burn upon it finely compounded incense; morning by morning, whenever he trims the lamps, he shall burn incense upon it,

 

8 and whenever Aaron lights the lamps in the evening, he shall burn incense upon it: a perpetual incense continually before the Lord throughout their generations.

 

9 And you shall not offer upon it any other incense, offering, or sacrifice; and you shall not pour a drink offering upon it.

 

10 And Aaron shall make atonement upon it, upon its horns, once a year; with the blood of the purification of sins of atonement, once a year he shall purify it throughout their generations: it is most holy to the Lord.

 

11 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,

 

12 If you take the census of the sons of Israel in their enrollment, then each shall give a ransom for his soul to the Lord, and there shall be no calamity among them in their enrollment.

 

13 And this is what they shall give as many as pass over in the counting: half of the didrachma, which is according to the holy didrachma twenty obols to the didrachma and the half of the didrachma is a contribution to the Lord.

 

14 Everyone passing over into the counting, from twenty years old and upward, shall give the contribution to the Lord.

 

15 The rich shall not add more, and the poor shall not give less than the half didrachma when giving the contribution to the Lord, to make atonement for your souls.

 

16 And you shall take the money of the contribution from the sons of Israel and give it for the service of the tent of testimony, and it shall be for the sons of Israel a memorial before the Lord, to make atonement for your souls.

 

17 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,

 

18 Make a bronze laver with a bronze base for it, for washing; and you shall place it between the tent of testimony and the altar, and you shall pour water into it,

 

19 and Aaron and his sons shall wash their hands and their feet with water from it.

 

20 Whenever they enter the tent of testimony, they shall wash with water, so that they shall not die; or whenever they approach the altar to minister and to offer up the whole burnt offerings to the Lord,

 

21 they shall wash their hands and their feet with water; whenever they enter the tent of testimony, they shall wash with water, that they may not die; and it shall be for them a perpetual ordinance, for him and his generations after him.

 

22 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,

 

23 And you, take spices: the flower of choice myrrh, five hundred shekels, and of fragrant cinnamon half of that, two hundred fifty, and of fragrant calamus two hundred fifty,

 

24 and of iris five hundred shekels of the sanctuary, and a hin of olive oil,

 

25 and you shall make it a holy anointing oil, a perfumed ointment by the art of a perfumer; it shall be a holy anointing oil.

 

26 And with it you shall anoint the tent of testimony and the ark of testimony

 

27 and the lampstand and all its vessels and the altar of incense

 

28 and the altar of whole burnt offerings and all its vessels and the table and all its vessels and the laver and its base,

 

29 and you shall consecrate them, and they shall be most holy; everyone who touches them shall be made holy.

 

30 And you shall anoint Aaron and his sons and consecrate them to serve me as priests.

 

31 And you shall speak to the sons of Israel, saying, This shall be a holy oil of anointing unction for you throughout your generations.

 

32 It shall not be poured on human flesh, and you shall not make any for yourselves in like manner according to this composition; it is holy and shall be a holy thing for you.

 

33 Whoever makes anything like it, and whoever gives any of it to a foreigner, shall be utterly destroyed from his people.

 

34 And the Lord said to Moses, Take for yourself spices, stacte, onycha, sweet galbanum, and clear frankincense; there shall be an equal amount of each;

 

35 and they shall make with it incense, a perfumed work of a perfumer, blended, pure, a holy work.

 

36 And you shall beat some of it fine and place it before the testimonies in the tent of testimony, from where I shall make myself known to you; it shall be most holy to you.

 

37 You shall not make incense for yourselves according to this composition; it shall be for you a holy thing to the Lord. 38 Whoever makes anything like it so as to smell it shall perish from his people.

 

Chapter 31

 

1 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,

 

2 "Behold, I have called by name Bezalel the son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah,

 

3 and I have filled him with a divine spirit of wisdom and understanding and knowledge in every work,

 

4 to devise and to be a master craftsman, to work the gold and the silver and the bronze, and the blue and the purple and the spun scarlet and the twisted fine linen,

 

5 and stonework, and for the works of carpentry in wood, to work according to all the works.

 

6 And I have given him also Oholiab the son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan, and to everyone understanding in heart I have given understanding, and they shall make all that I have commanded you:

 

7 the tent of witness and the ark of the covenant and the mercy seat that is upon it, and the furnishings of the tent,

 

8 and the altars and the table and all its vessels, and the pure lampstand and all its vessels,

 

9 and the laver and its base,

 

10 and the ministerial garments of Aaron and the garments of his sons, to serve me as priests,

 

11 and the anointing oil and the compounded incense of the sanctuary; according to all that I have commanded you, they shall make them."

 

12 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,

 

13 "And you, command the sons of Israel, saying, 'See, and you shall keep my sabbaths; it is a sign with me and among you throughout your generations, that you may know that I am the Lord who sanctifies you.

 

14 And you shall keep the sabbaths, because this is holy to the Lord for you; whoever profanes it shall surely be put to death; everyone who shall do work on it, that soul shall be utterly destroyed from the midst of his people.

 

15 Six days you shall do works, but on the seventh day is a sabbath, a holy rest to the Lord; everyone who shall do work on the seventh day shall surely be put to death.

 

16 And the sons of Israel shall keep the sabbaths, to observe them throughout their generations: an everlasting covenant.

 

17 Between me and the sons of Israel it is an everlasting sign, because in six days the Lord made the heaven and the earth, and on the seventh day he ceased and rested.'"

 

18 And he gave to Moses, when he had finished speaking to him on Mount Sinai, the two tablets of witness, tablets of stone written with the finger of God.

 

Chapter 32

 

1 And when the people saw that Moses delayed to come down from the mountain, the people gathered together against Aaron, and they say to him, "Arise and make us gods who will go before us; for as for this Moses, the man who brought us out of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him."

 

2 And Aaron says to them, "Take off the gold earrings that are in the ears of your wives and daughters and bring them to me."

 

3 And all the people took off the gold earrings that were in their ears and brought them to Aaron.

 

4 And he received them from their hands and fashioned them with an engraving tool and made them into a molten calf, and he said, "These are your gods, Israel, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt."

 

5 And when Aaron saw it, he built an altar before it, and Aaron proclaimed, saying, "A feast of the Lord tomorrow."

 

6 And rising early on the next day, he offered up whole burnt offerings and brought a sacrifice of salvation, and the people sat down to eat and drink and rose up to play.

 

7 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, "Go quickly, descend from here; for your people have acted lawlessly, whom you brought out of the land of Egypt.

 

8 They have quickly turned aside from the way which you commanded them; they have made for themselves a calf and have worshiped it and have sacrificed to it and said, 'These are your gods, Israel, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt.'

 

10 And now let me be, and being angered with wrath against them, I will destroy them, and I will make you into a great nation."

 

11 And Moses made supplication before the Lord God and said, "Why, Lord, are you angered with wrath against your people, whom you brought out of the land of Egypt with great strength and with your uplifted arm?

 

12 Lest the Egyptians should speak, saying, 'With malice he brought them out, to kill them in the mountains and to consume them from the earth.' Cease from the wrath of your anger and be merciful concerning the evil against your people,

 

13 remembering Abraham and Isaac and Jacob, your servants, to whom you swore by yourself and spoke to them, saying, 'I will greatly multiply your seed like the stars of heaven in multitude, and all this land, which you said you would give to their seed, and they shall possess it forever.'"

 

14 And the Lord was propitiated concerning the evil which he said he would do to his people.

 

15 And Moses turned and went down from the mountain, and the two tablets of the testimony were in his hands, stone tablets written on both their sides; on this side and on that they were written.

 

16 And the tablets were the work of God, and the writing is the writing of God, engraved on the tablets.

 

17 And Joshua, hearing the voice of the people crying out, says to Moses, "There is a sound of war in the camp."

 

18 And he says, "It is not the voice of those leading in strength, nor the voice of those leading in rout, but the voice of those leading with wine I hear."

 

19 And when he drew near to the camp, he sees the calf and the dances, and Moses, being angered with wrath, threw the two tablets from his hands and shattered them beneath the mountain.

 

20 And taking the calf which they had made, he burned it with fire and ground it fine and scattered it upon the water and made the sons of Israel drink it.

 

21 And Moses said to Aaron, "What did this people do to you, that you have brought upon them a great sin?"

 

22 And Aaron said to Moses, "Do not be angry, lord; for you know the impetuousness of this people.

 

23 For they say to me, 'Make us gods who will go before us; for as for this Moses, the man who brought us out of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.'

 

24 And I said to them, 'If anyone has gold, take it off.' And they gave it to me, and I threw it into the fire, and this calf came out."

 

25 And Moses, seeing that the people were scattered — for Aaron had scattered them, a laughingstock to their adversaries

 

26 Moses stood at the gate of the camp and said, "Who is for the Lord? Let him come to me." Then all the sons of Levi gathered to him.

 

27 And he says to them, "Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: Let each man put his sword on his thigh, and pass through and go back from gate to gate through the camp, and let each man kill his brother, and each man his neighbor, and each man the one nearest to him."

 

28 And the sons of Levi did as Moses spoke to them, and there fell from the people on that day about three thousand men.

 

29 And Moses said to them, "You have filled your hands today for the Lord, each one at the cost of his son or his brother, that a blessing may be given upon you."

 

30 And it came to pass after the next day that Moses said to the people, "You have sinned a great sin; and now I will go up to God, that I may make atonement for your sin."

 

31 And Moses returned to the Lord and said, "I beseech you, Lord; this people has sinned a great sin and made for themselves gods of gold.

 

32 And now, if you forgive them their sin, forgive; but if not, blot me out of your book which you have written."

 

33 And the Lord said to Moses, "If anyone has sinned before me, I will blot him out of my book.

 

34 But now go, descend, and lead this people to the place of which I spoke to you; behold, my angel goes before your face; but on whatever day I visit, I will bring upon them their sin."

 

35 And the Lord struck the people for the making of the calf, which Aaron made.

 

Chapter 33

 

1 And the Lord said to Moses, "Go, depart from here, you and your people, whom you brought out of the land of Egypt, to the land which I swore to Abraham and Isaac and Jacob, saying, 'To your seed I will give it.'

 

2 And I will send my angel before your face, and he will drive out the Amorite and the Hittite and the Perizzite and the Girgashite and the Hivite and the Jebusite.

 

3 And I will bring you into a land flowing with milk and honey; for I will surely not go up with you, because you are a stiff-necked people, lest I destroy you on the way."

 

4 And when the people heard this grievous word, they mourned in mourning garments.

 

5 And the Lord said to the sons of Israel, "You are a stiff-necked people; take care lest I bring another plague upon you and destroy you. Now therefore take off the robes of your glory and your ornaments, and I will show you what I will do to you."

 

6 And the sons of Israel stripped off their ornaments and their attire from Mount Horeb.

 

7 And Moses took his tent and pitched it outside the camp, far from the camp, and it was called the tent of witness; and it came to pass that everyone seeking the Lord went out to the tent outside the camp.

 

8 And whenever Moses went into the tent outside the camp, all the people stood watching, each one at the door of his tent, and they gazed after Moses as he went, until he entered the tent.

 

9 And when Moses entered the tent, the pillar of cloud came down and stood at the door of the tent, and he spoke with Moses.

 

10 And all the people saw the pillar of cloud standing at the door of the tent, and all the people stood and worshipped, each from the door of his tent.

 

11 And the Lord spoke to Moses face to face, as one would speak to his own friend. And he would return to the camp, but his servant Joshua the son of Nun, a young man, did not depart from the tent.

 

12 And Moses said to the Lord, "Behold, you say to me, 'Lead up this people'; but you have not made known to me whom you will send with me. Yet you said to me, 'I know you above all, and you have favor with me.'

 

13 If therefore I have found favor before you, reveal yourself to me; let me see you plainly, so that I may have found favor before you, and that I may know that this great nation is your people."

 

14 And he says, "I myself will go before you and give you rest."

 

15 And he says to him, "If you yourself do not go, do not lead me up from here.

 

16 And how will it be truly known that I have found favor with you, both I and your people, except by your going along with us? And I shall be glorified, both I and your people, above all the nations that are upon the earth."

 

17 And the Lord said to Moses, "This word also which you have spoken I will do for you; for you have found favor before me, and I know you above all."

 

18 And he says, "Show me your own glory."

 

19 And he said, "I will pass by before you in my glory, and I will call by my name 'Lord' before you; and I will have mercy on whomever I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whomever I have compassion."

 

20 And he said, "You will not be able to see my face; for no man shall see my face and live."

 

21 And the Lord said, "Behold, there is a place beside me; you shall stand upon the rock.

 

22 And when my glory passes by, I will put you into a cleft of the rock, and I will cover you with my hand until I have passed by;

 

23 and I will take away my hand, and then you shall see my back, but my face shall not be seen by you."

 

Chapter 34

 

1 And the Lord said to Moses, "Cut for yourself two stone tablets like the first ones, and come up to me on the mountain, and I will write upon the tablets the words that were on the first tablets, which you broke.

 

2 And be ready by morning, and you shall go up onto Mount Sinai and shall stand before me there on the top of the mountain.

 

3 And let no one go up with you, nor be seen anywhere on the mountain; and let neither the sheep nor the cattle graze near that mountain."

 

4 And he cut two stone tablets like the first ones; and Moses, rising early, went up onto Mount Sinai, as the Lord had commanded him; and Moses took the two stone tablets.

 

5 And the Lord came down in a cloud and stood beside him there; and he called on the name of the Lord.

 

6 And the Lord passed before his face, and he proclaimed, "The Lord God, compassionate and merciful, longsuffering and abounding in mercy and true,

 

7 keeping righteousness and showing mercy to thousands, taking away lawlessness and injustice and sin—and he will not clear the guilty, bringing the lawlessness of fathers upon children and upon children's children, to the third and fourth generation."

 

8 And Moses, hastening, bowed to the ground and worshiped,

 

9 and said, "If I have found favor before you, let my Lord go with us; for the people is stiff-necked, and you will take away our sins and our lawlessness, and we shall be yours."

 

10 And the Lord said to Moses, "Behold, I make a covenant with you: before all your people I will do glorious things, such as have not been done in all the earth or in any nation, and all the people among whom you are shall see the works of the Lord, that they are marvelous—the things I will do for you.

 

11 Give heed to all that I command you. Behold, I am driving out before your face the Amorite and the Canaanite and the Hittite and the Perizzite and the Hivite and the Girgashite and the Jebusite.

 

12 Take heed to yourself, lest you make a covenant with those dwelling in the land into which you are entering, lest it become a stumbling block among you.

 

13 You shall tear down their altars and shatter their pillars and cut down their sacred groves and burn the carved images of their gods with fire.

 

14 For you shall not worship another god; for the Lord God—jealous is his name—is a jealous God.

 

15 Lest you make a covenant with those dwelling among foreigners in the land, and they go whoring after their gods and sacrifice to their gods, and they invite you and you eat of their sacrifices,

 

16 and you take of their daughters for your sons, and give of your daughters to their sons, and your daughters go whoring after their gods, and lead your sons whoring after their gods.

 

17 And you shall not make for yourself molten gods.

 

18 And you shall keep the feast of unleavened bread: seven days you shall eat unleavened bread, as I have commanded you, at the appointed time in the month of the new grain; for in the month of the new grain you came out of Egypt.

 

19 Everything that opens the womb is mine—the males, the firstborn of the calf and the firstborn of the sheep.

 

20 And the firstborn of a beast of burden you shall redeem with a sheep; but if you do not redeem it, you shall pay a price. Every firstborn of your sons you shall redeem. You shall not appear before me empty-handed.

 

21 Six days you shall work, but on the seventh you shall rest; at plowing time and at harvest you shall rest.

 

22 And you shall keep for me a feast of weeks, at the beginning of the wheat harvest, and a feast of ingathering at the middle of the year.

 

23 Three times in the year every male of yours shall appear before the Lord, the God of Israel.

 

24 For when I drive out the nations before your face and enlarge your borders, no one shall covet your land whenever you go up to appear before the Lord your God three times in the year.

 

25 You shall not slaughter the blood of my sacrifices with leaven, and the sacrifices of the feast of the Passover shall not remain until morning.

 

26 The first fruits of your land you shall bring into the house of the Lord your God. You shall not boil a lamb in its mother's milk."

 

27 And the Lord said to Moses, "Write these words for yourself; for upon these words I have made a covenant with you and with Israel."

 

28 And Moses was there before the Lord forty days and forty nights; he ate no bread and drank no water; and he wrote these words on the tablets of the covenant, the ten words.

 

29 And as Moses came down from the mountain, the two tablets were in Moses' hands; and as he came down from the mountain, Moses did not know that the appearance of the skin of his face was glorified while he spoke with him.

 

30 And Aaron and all the elders of Israel saw Moses, and the appearance of the skin of his face was glorified, and they were afraid to come near him.

 

31 And Moses called them, and Aaron and all the rulers of the congregation turned toward him, and Moses spoke to them.

 

32 And after this all the sons of Israel came near to him, and he commanded them all that the Lord had spoken to him on Mount Sinai.

 

33 And when he had finished speaking to them, he put a veil over his face.

 

34 And whenever Moses went in before the Lord to speak with him, he removed the veil until he came out. And when he came out he spoke to all the sons of Israel what the Lord had commanded him,

 

35 and the sons of Israel saw the face of Moses, that it was glorified; and Moses put the veil over his face until he went in to speak with him.

 

Chapter 35

 

1 And Moses assembled the whole congregation of the children of Israel and said to them, "These are the words which the Lord has said, that you should do them.

 

2 Six days you shall do work, but on the seventh day there shall be rest, holy, a sabbath, a repose for the Lord; everyone who does work on it shall die.

 

3 You shall not kindle a fire in any of your dwellings on the day of the sabbaths; I am the Lord."

 

4 And Moses spoke to the whole congregation of the children of Israel, saying, "This is the word which the Lord has commanded, saying,

 

5 Take from among yourselves an offering for the Lord; everyone who accepts it in his heart, they shall bring the firstfruits to the Lord: gold, silver, bronze,

 

6 blue, purple, double scarlet spun, and twisted fine linen and goats' hair,

 

7 and rams' skins dyed red and blue skins and incorruptible wood,

 

9 and sardius stones and stones for engraving for the ephod and the full-length robe.

 

10 And let every one who is wise in heart among you come and work all things that the Lord has commanded:

 

11 the tabernacle and the curtains and the coverings and the fastenings and the bars and the pillars,

 

12 and the ark of the testimony and its poles and its mercy seat and the veil,

 

12a and the hangings of the court and its pillars and the emerald stones and the incense and the anointing oil,

 

13 and the table and all its vessels,

 

14 and the lampstand for the light and all its vessels,

 

16 and the altar and all its vessels,

 

19 and the holy garments of Aaron the priest and the garments in which they shall minister, and the tunics for the sons of Aaron for the priesthood, and the anointing oil and the compound incense."

 

20 And the whole congregation of the children of Israel went out from Moses,

 

21 and they brought, each one whatever his heart prompted, and as many as it seemed good to their soul, they brought an offering to the Lord for all the works of the tabernacle of the testimony and for all its fittings and for all the garments of the sanctuary.

 

22 And the men brought, from the women; everyone to whom it seemed good in his mind brought seals and earrings and rings and hair-clasps and bracelets, every article of gold and all who brought offerings of gold to the Lord.

 

23 And everyone with whom was found fine linen and blue skins and rams' skins dyed red brought them.

 

24 And everyone who offered an offering of silver and bronze brought the offerings to the Lord, and those with whom was found incorruptible wood for all the works of the construction brought it.

 

25 And every woman wise in mind to spin with her hands brought what she had spun: the blue and the purple and the scarlet and the fine linen.

 

26 And all the women to whom it seemed good in their mind, in wisdom, spun the goats' hair.

 

27 And the rulers brought the emerald stones and the stones for the filling for the ephod and for the oracle-breastpiece,

 

28 and the compounds and the anointing oil and the composition of incense.

 

29 And every man and woman whose mind prompted them to come in and do all the works that the Lord commanded to be done through Moses—the children of Israel brought an offering to the Lord.

 

30 And Moses said to the children of Israel, "Behold, God has called by name Bezalel the son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah,

 

31 and has filled him with a divine spirit of wisdom and understanding and knowledge of all things,

 

32 to be master craftsman in all the works of craftsmanship, to work the gold and the silver and the bronze,

 

33 and to cut stone and to work wood and to work in every work of wisdom.

 

34 And indeed he has given it to him in his mind to teach, both to him and to Oholiab the son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan.

 

35 He has filled them with wisdom and understanding of mind, to understand how to do all the works of the sanctuary, and to weave the woven and embroidered work with the scarlet and the fine linen, to do every work of craftsmanship of embroidery."

 

Chapter 36

 

1 And Bezalel and Eliab and every man wise in understanding, to whom wisdom and knowledge were given, made everything, understanding how to do all the works pertaining to the sanctuary, according to all that the Lord had commanded.

 

2 And Moses called Bezalel and Eliab and all who had wisdom, to whom God had given knowledge in the heart, and all who willingly desired to come forward to the works so as to complete them;

 

3 and they received from Moses all the offerings which the sons of Israel had brought for all the works of the sanctuary, to do them; and they continued to receive what was being brought by those who brought it, morning by morning.

 

4 And all the wise men who were doing the works of the sanctuary came, each one according to his own work which they were working,

 

5 and they said to Moses, "The people bring an abundance beyond the works which the Lord commanded to be done."

 

6 And Moses gave orders, and it was proclaimed in the camp, saying, "Let no man or woman work any longer at the firstfruits of the sanctuary." And the people were restrained from bringing any more.

 

7 And the works were sufficient for them to complete the construction, and they left some over.

 

8 And every wise man among those working made the garments of the holy places, which are for Aaron the priest, as the Lord commanded Moses.

 

9 And they made the ephod of gold and blue and purple and spun scarlet and twined fine linen.

 

10 And the plates of gold were cut into threads so as to weave them together with the blue and the purple and with the spun scarlet and with the twined fine linen, a woven work;

 

11 they made it as shoulder-pieces joined together from both sides,

 

12 a woven work interlaced with one another; they made it of itself according to its own fashioning, of gold and blue and purple and spun scarlet and twined fine linen, as the Lord commanded Moses.

 

13 And they made both the stones of emerald, clasped and set round with gold, engraved and carved with the carving of a seal, from the names of the sons of Israel;

 

14 and he put them on the shoulders of the ephod, stones of memorial of the sons of Israel, as the Lord commanded Moses.

 

15 And they made the oracle, a woven work with embroidery, according to the work of the ephod, of gold and blue and purple and spun scarlet and twined fine linen;

 

16 they made the oracle square, doubled, a span in length and a span in breadth, doubled.

 

17 And there was woven in it a fabric set with stones in four rows: a row of stones sardius and topaz and emerald, the one row;

 

18 and the second row, carbuncle and sapphire and jasper;

 

19 and the third row, ligure and agate and amethyst;

 

20 and the fourth row, chrysolite and beryl and onyx; encircled with gold and bound together with gold.

 

21 And the stones were from the names of the sons of Israel, twelve according to their names, engraved as seals, each from his own name, for the twelve tribes.

 

22 And they made upon the oracle plaited fringes, a work of wreathing, of pure gold;

 

23 and they made two golden bosses and two golden rings, and they put the two golden rings on both the ends of the oracle;

 

24 and they put the golden wreaths on the rings on both sides of the oracle,

 

25 and the two wreaths into the two joinings, and they put them on the two bosses, and they put them on the shoulders of the ephod, opposite, in front.

 

26 And they made two golden rings and put them on the two edges at the end of the oracle, at the end of the back part of the ephod, on the inside.

 

27 And they made two golden rings and put them on both the shoulders of the ephod, beneath it, in front, at the joining, above the woven band of the ephod.

 

28 And he fastened the oracle by the rings on it to the rings of the ephod, held together with blue, plaited into the fabric of the ephod, so that the oracle might not come loose from the ephod, as the Lord commanded Moses.

 

29 And they made the robe under the ephod, a woven work, all of blue;

 

30 and the opening of the robe in the middle, woven throughout, interlaced, the opening having a border round about, that it might not be torn.

 

31 And they made on the hem of the robe below, as of a flowering pomegranate, little pomegranates of blue and purple and spun scarlet and twined fine linen;

 

32 and they made golden bells, and they put the bells on the hem of the robe round about, between the pomegranates:

 

33 a golden bell and a pomegranate on the hem of the robe round about, for the ministering, as the Lord commanded Moses.

 

34 And they made tunics of fine linen, a woven work, for Aaron and for his sons,

 

35 and the headdresses of fine linen, and the turban of fine linen, and the drawers of twined fine linen,

 

36 and their girdles of fine linen and blue and purple and spun scarlet, the work of an embroiderer, in the manner the Lord commanded Moses.

 

37 And they made the golden plate, the consecrated thing of the sanctuary, of pure gold; and he wrote on it letters impressed as of a seal: "Holiness to the Lord";

 

38 and they put on it a border of blue, so that it might lie upon the turban above, in the manner the Lord commanded Moses.

 

Chapter 37

 

1 And they made ten curtains for the tabernacle,

 

2 the length of one curtain being twenty-eight cubits — they were all the same — and the width of one curtain four cubits.

 

3 And they made the veil of blue and purple and spun scarlet and twisted fine linen, the woven work of cherubim,

 

4 and they set it upon four pillars of incorruptible wood overlaid with gold, and their capitals were gold, and their four bases were silver.

 

5 And they made the veil of the door of the tabernacle of testimony of blue and purple and spun scarlet and twisted fine linen, the woven work of cherubim,

 

6 and its five pillars and the rings; and they overlaid their capitals and their clasps with gold, and their five bases were bronze.

 

7 And they made the court: the hangings of the court toward the south of twisted fine linen, a hundred by a hundred,

 

8 and their pillars twenty, and their bases twenty;

 

9 and the side toward the north a hundred by a hundred, and their pillars twenty, and their bases twenty;

 

10 and the side toward the sea, curtains of fifty cubits, their pillars ten, and their bases ten;

 

11 and the side toward the east fifty cubits,

 

12 hangings of fifteen cubits at the back, and their pillars three, and their bases three,

 

13 and on the second back, on this side and on that beside the gate of the court, curtains of fifteen cubits, and their pillars three, and their bases three.

 

14 All the curtains of the court were of twisted fine linen,

 

15 and the bases of the pillars bronze, and their hooks silver, and their capitals overlaid with silver, and the pillars overlaid with silver, all the pillars of the court.

 

16 And the veil of the gate of the court, the work of an embroiderer, of blue and purple and spun scarlet and twisted fine linen, twenty cubits in length, and the height and the width five cubits, made equal to the hangings of the court;

 

17 and their pillars four, and their four bases bronze, and their hooks silver, and their capitals overlaid with silver;

 

18 and they themselves overlaid with silver, and all the pegs of the court round about were bronze.

 

19 And this was the arrangement of the tabernacle of testimony, as it was appointed to Moses, that the service of the Levites should be through Ithamar the son of Aaron the priest.

 

20 And Bezalel the son of Uri, of the tribe of Judah, did as the Lord commanded Moses,

 

21 and Oholiab the son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan, who was the master craftsman of the woven and the needlework and the embroidered things, weaving with the scarlet and the fine linen. 

 

Chapter 38

 

1 And Bezalel made the ark,

 

2 and he overlaid it with pure gold within and without.

 

3 And he cast for it four gold rings, two on the one side and two on the second side,

 

4 wide enough for the carrying-poles, so as to lift it by them.

 

5 And he made the mercy seat above the ark, of gold,

 

6 and the two cherubim of gold,

 

7 one cherub on the one end of the mercy seat and one cherub on the second end of the mercy seat,

 

8 overshadowing the mercy seat with their wings.

 

9 And he made the table that is set forth, of pure gold;

 

10 and he cast for it four rings, two on the one side and two on the second side, wide enough so as to lift it with the carrying-poles by them.

 

11 And he made the carrying-poles of the ark and of the table, and he overlaid them with gold.

 

12 And he made the vessels of the table, both the dishes and the censers and the ladles and the libation bowls, with which he shall pour libations of gold.

 

13 And he made the lampstand, which gives light, of gold, its shaft solid,

 

14 and the branches from both its sides;

 

15 from its branches the buds projecting, three from this one and three from that one, made equal to one another;

 

16 and their lamp-holders, which are on the ends, nut-shaped from them; and the sockets from them, so that the lamps might be upon them, and the seventh socket, on the top of the lamp-holder at the summit above, solid, all of gold;

 

17 and seven gold lamps upon it, and its tongs of gold and their oil-vessels of gold.

 

18 This man overlaid the pillars with silver and cast gold rings for each pillar and gilded the bars with gold and overlaid the pillars of the veil with gold and made the hooks of gold.

 

19 This man also made the rings of the tabernacle of gold and the rings of the court, and rings of bronze for stretching out the covering from above.

 

20 This man cast the silver capitals of the tabernacle and the bronze capitals of the door of the tabernacle and for the gate of the court, and he made silver hooks for the pillars, upon the pillars; this man overlaid them with silver.

 

21 This man also made the pegs of the tabernacle and the pegs of the court, of bronze.

 

22 This man made the bronze altar from the bronze censers which belonged to the men who rebelled with the company of Korah.

 

23 This man made all the vessels of the altar and its fire-pan and the base and the bowls and the flesh-hooks, of bronze.

 

24 This man made for the altar an appendage, a work of network, below the fire-pan, beneath it, up to the half of it, and he put on it four bronze rings on the four sides of the appendage of the altar, wide enough for the bars, so as to lift the altar by them.

 

25 This man made the holy anointing oil and the composition of the incense, a pure work of a perfumer.

 

26 This man made the bronze laver and its bronze base from the mirrors of the women who fasted, who fasted by the doors of the tabernacle of witness on the day when he set it up;

 

27 and he made the laver, so that Moses and Aaron and his sons might wash their hands and their feet from it; when they went into the tabernacle of witness or whenever they approached the altar to minister, they would wash from it, just as the Lord commanded Moses.

 

Chapter 39

 

1 All the gold that was wrought for the works, throughout all the workmanship of the holy things, was of the gold of the firstfruits twenty-nine talents and seven hundred twenty shekels, according to the holy shekel.

 

2 And the offering of silver from the men of the congregation who were numbered was a hundred talents and one thousand seven hundred seventy-five shekels,

 

3 one drachma per head, the half of the shekel according to the holy shekel, everyone passing through the numbering from twenty years old and upward, unto the six hundred three thousand five hundred and fifty.

 

4 And the hundred talents of silver went to the casting of the hundred capitals of the tabernacle and to the capitals of the veil, a hundred capitals for the hundred talents, a talent to a capital.

 

5 And the one thousand seven hundred seventy-five shekels they made into hooks for the pillars, and he overlaid their capitals with gold and adorned them.

 

6 And the bronze of the offering was seventy talents and one thousand five hundred shekels.

 

7 And he made from it the bases of the door of the tent of witness,

 

8 and the bases of the court round about, and the bases of the gate of the court, and the pegs of the tabernacle, and the pegs of the court round about,

 

9 and the bronze grating of the altar, and all the vessels of the altar, and all the implements of the tent of witness.

 

10 And the sons of Israel did as the Lord commanded Moses; so they did.

 

11 And of the remaining gold of the offering they made vessels to minister with them before the Lord.

 

12 And of the blue and purple and scarlet that was left they made ministering garments for Aaron, so as to minister in them in the holy place.

 

13 And they brought the garments to Moses, and the tabernacle and its vessels, and its bases and its bars and the pillars,

 

14 and the ark of the covenant and its carrying-poles,

 

15 and the altar and all its vessels, and the oil of anointing and the compounded incense,

 

16 and the pure lampstand and its lamps, lamps for burning, and the oil for the light,

 

17 and the table of the presentation and all its vessels and the loaves set forth,

 

18 and the garments of the sanctuary, which are Aaron's, and the garments of his sons for the priesthood,

 

19 and the hangings of the court and the pillars, and the veil of the door of the tabernacle and of the gate of the court, and all the vessels of the tabernacle and all its implements,

 

20 and the skins, rams' skins dyed red, and the coverings, skins of blue, and the coverings of the rest,

 

21 and the pegs and all the implements for the works of the tent of witness.

 

22 Whatever the Lord commanded Moses, so the sons of Israel made all the furnishings.

 

23 And Moses saw all the works, and they had done them in the manner the Lord commanded Moses—so had they done them; and Moses blessed them.

 

Chapter 40

 

1 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,

 

2 "On the first day of the first month, at the new moon, you shall set up the tent of witness,

 

3 and you shall place the ark of the witness, and you shall cover the ark with the veil,

 

4 and you shall bring in the table and set out its presentation, and you shall bring in the lampstand and set upon it its lamps,

 

5 and you shall place the golden altar for burning incense before the ark, and you shall put a covering of a veil over the door of the tent of witness,

 

6 and the altar of offerings you shall place beside the doors of the tent of witness,

 

8 and you shall set the tent round about and sanctify all that belongs to it round about.

 

9 And you shall take the oil of anointing and anoint the tent and all that is in it, and you shall sanctify it and all its vessels, and it shall be holy.

 

10 And you shall anoint the altar of offerings and all its vessels, and you shall sanctify the altar, and the altar shall be holy of holies.

 

12 And you shall bring Aaron and his sons to the doors of the tent of witness and wash them with water,

 

13 and you shall clothe Aaron in the holy garments and anoint him and sanctify him, and he shall serve me as priest.

 

14 And you shall bring his sons and clothe them in tunics,

 

15 and you shall anoint them, in the way you anointed their father, and they shall serve me as priests; and it shall be so that they have an anointing of priesthood forever, throughout their generations."

 

16 And Moses did all that the Lord commanded him; so he did.

 

17 And it came to pass in the first month, in the second year after they went out of Egypt, at the new moon, the tent was set up.

 

18 And Moses set up the tent and put on the capitals and inserted the bars and set up the pillars,

 

19 and he stretched the curtains over the tent and put the covering of the tent upon it from above, as the Lord commanded Moses.

 

20 And taking the testimonies, he put them into the ark, and he put the poles under the ark,

 

21 and he brought the ark into the tent and put on the covering of the veil and covered the ark of the witness, in the way the Lord commanded Moses.

 

22 And he placed the table in the tent of witness, on the side of the tent of witness toward the north, outside the veil of the tent,

 

23 and he set out upon it the loaves of the presentation before the Lord, in the way the Lord commanded Moses.

 

24 And he placed the lampstand in the tent of witness, on the side of the tent toward the south,

 

25 and he set upon it its lamps before the Lord, in the way the Lord commanded Moses.

 

26 And he placed the golden altar in the tent of witness opposite the veil,

 

27 and he burned upon it the compounded incense, just as the Lord commanded Moses.

 

29 And the altar of offerings he placed beside the doors of the tent,

 

33 and he set up the court around the tent and the altar. And Moses completed all the works.

 

34 And the cloud covered the tent of witness, and the tent was filled with the glory of the Lord.

 

35 And Moses was not able to enter the tent of witness, because the cloud overshadowed it and the tent was filled with the glory of the Lord.

 

36 And whenever the cloud went up from the tent, the sons of Israel would set out with their baggage;

 

37 but if the cloud did not go up, they would not set out until the day when the cloud went up;

 

38 for a cloud was upon the tent by day, and fire was upon it by night, before all Israel, in all their journeyings.
