8 And the sons of Ham:

9 And the sons of Cush:
Seba and Havilah and Sabatha and Raamah and Sabathaca. And the sons of Raamah:
Sheba and Dedan.
10 And Cush begot
Nimrod; he began to be a giant hunter upon the earth.
17 The sons of Shem:
Elam and Asshur and Arphaxad,

25 Eber, Peleg, Reu,
26 Serug, Nahor, Terah,
27 Abraham.
28 And the sons of
Abraham: Isaac and Ishmael.
29 And these are the
generations of Ishmael the firstborn: Nebaioth and Kedar, Adbeel, Mibsam,
30 Mishma, Dumah, Massa, Hadad, Tema,
31 Jetur, Naphish, and
Kedemah. These are the sons of Ishmael.
32 And the sons of
Keturah, Abraham's concubine: she bore him Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian,
Ishbak, Shuah. And the sons of Jokshan: Sheba and Dedan.
33 And the sons of
Midian: Ephah and Epher and Enoch and Abida and Eldaah. All these were sons of
Keturah.
34 And Abraham begot
Isaac. And the sons of Isaac: Esau and Jacob.
35 The sons of Esau:
Eliphaz and Reuel and Jeush and Jalam and Korah.
36 The sons of Eliphaz:
Teman and Omar, Zepho and Gatam and Kenaz, and by Timna, Amalek.
37 And the sons of
Reuel: Nahath, Zerah, Shammah, and Mizzah.
38 The sons of Seir:
Lotan, Shobal, Zibeon, Anah, Dishon, Ezer, Dishan.
39 And the sons of
Lotan: Hori and Hemam and Aiath and Timna.
40 The sons of Shobal:
Alvan, Manahath, Ebal, Shepho, and Onam. And the sons of Zibeon: Aiah and Anah.
41 The sons of Anah:
Dishon. And the sons of Dishon: Hemdan and Eshban and Ithran and Cheran.
42 And the sons of
Ezer: Bilhan and Zaavan and Jaakan. The sons of Dishan: Uz and Aran.
43 And these are their
kings: Bela son of Beor, and the name of his city was Dinhabah.
44 And Bela died, and
Jobab son of Zerah from Bozrah reigned in his place.
45 And Jobab died, and
Husham from the land of the Temanites reigned in his place.
46 And Husham died, and
Hadad son of Bedad, who smote Midian in the plain of Moab, reigned in his
place, and the name of his city was Avith.
47 And Hadad died, and
Samlah from Masrekah reigned in his place.
48 And Samlah died, and
Saul from Rehoboth by the river reigned in his place.
49 And Saul died, and
Baal-hanan son of Achbor reigned in his place.
50 And Baal-hanan son
of Achbor died, and Hadad son of Bedad reigned in his place, and the name of
his city was Pai.
51 And Hadad died. And
the chiefs of Edom were: chief Timna, chief Alvah, chief Jetheth,
52 chief Oholibamah,
chief Elah, chief Pinon,
53 chief Kenaz, chief
Teman, chief Mibzar,
54 chief Magdiel, chief
Iram. These were the chiefs of Edom.
Chapter 2
1 These are the names
of the sons of Israel: Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Zebulun,
2 Dan, Joseph,
Benjamin, Naphtali, Gad, Asher.
3 The sons of Judah:
Er, Onan, Shelah, three; they were born to him by the daughter of Shua the
Canaanitess. And Er, the firstborn of Judah, was wicked before the Lord, and he
killed him.
4 And Tamar his
daughter-in-law bore him Perez and Zerah. All the sons of Judah were five.
5 The sons of Perez:
Hezron and Jemuel.
6 And the sons of
Zerah: Zimri and Ethan and Heman and Calcol and Dara, five in all.
7 And the sons of
Carmi: Achar, the troubler of Israel, who transgressed in the matter of the
devoted thing.
8 And the sons of

9 And the sons of
Hezron, who were born to him: Jerahmeel and Ram and Caleb and Aram.
10 And Aram begot
Amminadab, and Amminadab begot Nahshon, prince of the house of Judah,
11 and Nahshon begot
Salmon, and Salmon begot Boaz,
12 and Boaz begot Obed,
and Obed begot Jesse,
13 and Jesse begot his
firstborn Eliab; Amminadab the second, Shammah the third,
14 Nethanel the fourth,
Raddai the fifth,
15 Ozem the sixth,
David the seventh.
16 And their sisters
were Zeruiah and Abigail. And the sons of Zeruiah: Abishai and Joab and Asahel,
three.
17 And Abigail bore
Amasa; and the father of Amasa was Jether the Ishmaelite.
18 And Caleb the son of
Hezron begot children by Azubah his wife and by Jerioth. And these were her
sons: Jesher and Shobab and Ardon.
19 And Azubah died, and
Caleb took to himself Ephrath, and she bore him Hur;
20 and Hur begot Uri,
and Uri begot Bezalel.
21 And after these
things Hezron went in to the daughter of Machir, the father of Gilead, and he
took her, and he was sixty years old, and she bore him Segub.
22 And Segub begot
Jair. And he had twenty-three cities in Gilead;
23 and Geshur and Aram
took the villages of Jair from them, Kenath and its villages, sixty cities. All
these belonged to the sons of Machir, the father of Gilead.
24 And after Hezron
died, Caleb went to Ephrathah. And the wife of Hezron was Abijah, and she bore
him Ashhur, the father of Tekoa.
25 And the sons of
Jerahmeel, the firstborn of Hezron, were: the firstborn Ram, and Bunah and Oren
and Ozem his brother.
26 And Jerahmeel had
another wife, and her name was Atarah; she is the mother of Onam.
27 And the sons of Ram,
the firstborn of Jerahmeel, were: Maaz and Jamin and Eker.
28 And the sons of Onam
were: Shammai and Jada. And the sons of Shammai: Nadab and Abishur.
29 And the name of the
wife of Abishur was Abihail, and she bore him Ahban and Molid.
30 The sons of Nadab:
Seled and Appaim. And Seled died having no children.
31 And the sons of
Appaim: Ishi. And the sons of Ishi: Sheshan. And the sons of Sheshan: Ahlai.
32 And the sons of
Jada: Ahishamai, Jether, Jonathan; and Jether died having no children.
33 And the sons of
Jonathan: Peleth and Zaza. These were the sons of Jerahmeel.
34 And Sheshan had no
sons, but only daughters; and Sheshan had an Egyptian servant, and his name was
Jarha,
35 and Sheshan gave his
daughter to Jarha his servant as a wife, and she bore him Attai.
36 And Attai begot
Nathan, and Nathan begot Zabad,
37 and Zabad begot
Ephlal, and Ephlal begot Obed,
38 and Obed begot Jehu,
and Jehu begot Azariah,
39 and Azariah begot
Helez, and Helez begot Eleasah,
40 and Eleasah begot
Sismai, and Sismai begot Shallum,
41 and Shallum begot Jekamiah, and Jekamiah begot Elishama.
42 And the sons of Caleb, the brother of Jerahmeel: Mesha
his firstborn, he was the father of Ziph; and the sons of Mareshah, the father
of Hebron.
43 And the sons of Hebron: Korah and Tappuah and Rekem and
Shema.
44 And Shema begot Raham, the father of Jorkeam, and
Jorkeam begot Shammai;
45 and his son was Maon, and Maon was the father of
Beth-zur.
46 And Ephah, the concubine of Caleb, bore Haran and Moza
and Gazez. And Haran begot Gazez.
47 And the sons of Jahdai: Regem and Jotham and Geshan and
Pelet and Ephah and Shaaph.
48 And Maacah, the concubine of Caleb, bore Sheber and
Tirhanah.
49 And Shaaph begot the father of Madmannah, and Sheva the
father of Machbenah and the father of Gibea; and the daughter of Caleb was
Achsah.
50 These were the sons of Caleb. The sons of Hur, the
firstborn of Ephrathah: Shobal, the father of Kiriath-jearim,
51 Salma, the father of Bethlehem, Hareph, the father of
Beth-gader.
52 And Shobal, the father of Kiriath-jearim, had sons:
Haroeh, Hazi, the Manahathites,
53 Emosphes, the city of Jair, the Ithrites and the
Puthites and the Shumathites and the Mishraites; from these came forth the
Zorathites and the Eshtaolites.
54 The sons of Salma: Bethlehem, the Netophathite, Ataroth
of the house of Joab, and half of the Manahathites, the Zorites,
55 and the families of the scribes dwelling at Jabez: the
Tirathites, the Shimeathites, the Sucathites. These are the Kenites who came
from Hammath, the father of the house of Rechab.
Chapter 3
1 And these were the sons of David who were born to him in
Hebron: the firstborn Amnon, by Ahinoam the Jezreelitess; the second, Daniel,
by Abigail the Carmelitess;
2 the third, Absalom, son of Maacah, daughter of Talmai
king of Geshur; the fourth, Adonijah, son of Haggith;
3 the fifth, Shephatiah, by Abital; the sixth, Ithream, by
Eglah his wife.
4 Six were born to him in Hebron, and he reigned there
seven years and six months. And thirty-three years he reigned in Jerusalem,
5 and these were born to him in Jerusalem: Shammua, Shobab,
Nathan, and Solomon, four by Bathsheba, daughter of Ammiel;
6 and Ibhar and Elishama and Eliphelet
7 and Nogah and Nepheg and Japhia
8 and Elishama and Eliada and Eliphelet, nine.
9 All these were sons of David, besides the sons of the
concubines; and Tamar was their sister.
10 The sons of Solomon: Rehoboam, Abijah his son, Asa his
son, Jehoshaphat his son,
11 Joram his son, Ahaziah his son, Joash his son,
12 Amaziah his son, Azariah his son, Jotham his son,
13 Ahaz his son, Hezekiah his son, Manasseh his son,
14 Amon his son, Josiah his son.
15 And the sons of Josiah: the firstborn Johanan, the
second Jehoiakim, the third Zedekiah, the fourth Shallum.
16 And the sons of Jehoiakim: Jeconiah his son, Zedekiah
his son.
17 And the sons of Jeconiah the captive: Shealtiel his son,
18 Malchiram and Pedaiah and Shenazzar and Jekamiah and
Hoshama and Nedabiah.
19 And the sons of Shealtiel: Zerubbabel and Shimei. And
the sons of Zerubbabel: Meshullam and Hananiah, and Shelomith their sister,
20 and Hashubah and Ohel and Berechiah and Hasadiah and
Jushab-hesed, five.
21 And the sons of Hananiah: Pelatiah, and Jeshaiah his
son, Rephaiah his son, Arnan his son, Obadiah his son, Shecaniah his son.
22 And the son of Shecaniah: Shemaiah. And the sons of
Shemaiah: Hattush and Igal and Bariah and Neariah and Shaphat, six.
23 And the sons of Neariah: Elioenai and Hizkiah and
Azrikam, three.
24 And the sons of Elioenai: Hodaviah and Eliashib and
Pelaiah and Akkub and Johanan and Delaiah and Anani, seven.
Chapter 4
1 And the sons of Judah: Phares, Arson and Charmi and Hor,
Soubal,
2 and Raia his son; and Soubal begot Ieth, and Ieth begot
Achimi and Laad; these are the generations of the Sarathite.
3 And these are the sons of Aitam: Iezrael and Ragma and
Iabas, and the name of their sister was Eseslebbon.
4 And Phanuel was the father of Gedor, and Azer the father
of Hosan. These are the sons of Hor, the firstborn of Ephratha, the father of
Bethlehem.
5 And Saour, the father of Thekoe, had two wives, Aoda and
Thoada.
6 And Aoda bore him Ochazam and Ephad and Thaiman and
Astheran; all these were the sons of Aoda.
7 And the sons of Thoada: Sareth and Saar and Ethnan.
8 And Kos begot Enob and Sabeba, and the generations of the
brother of Rechab, son of Iarim.
9 And Igabes was more glorious than his brothers; and his
mother called his name Igabes, saying, "I bore him as gabes."
10 And Igabes called upon the God of Israel, saying, "If
you will indeed bless me and enlarge my borders, and your hand be with me, and
you make knowledge so as not to humble me." And God brought about all that
he asked.
11 And Chaleb, the father of Ascha, begot Machir; he was
the father of Assathon.
12 And Assathon begot Bathrephan and Phessee and Thana, the
father of the city of Naas, brother of Eselon the Kenezite; these were the men
of Repha.
13 And the sons of Kenez: Gothoniel and Saraia. And the
sons of Gothoniel: Athath.
14 And Manathi begot Gophera. And Saraia begot Ioab, the
father of Ageaddair, for they were craftsmen.
15 And the sons of Chaleb, son of Iephonne: Era, Ala and
Noom. And the sons of Ala: Kenez.
16 And his son Geseel, Ameachi and Zapha and Zaira and
Eserael.
17 And the sons of Esri: Iether, Morad and Apher and Ialon.
And Iether begot Maron and Semai and Mareth, the father of Esthemon.
18 And his wife bore Iared, the father of Gedor, and Aber,
the father of Sochon, and Iekthiel, the father of Zano; and these are the sons
of Gelia, the daughter of Pharaoh, whom Mored took.
19 And the sons of the wife of Idouia, sister of Nachem.
And Dalia was the father of Keila, and Semeion the father of Ioman. And the
sons of Naem, the father of Keila: Agarmi and Esthemoe the Machathite.
20 And the sons of Semion: Amnon and Rana, son of Anan and
Thilon. And the sons of Isei: Zoath and the sons of Zoath.
21 The sons of Selom, son of Judah: Er, the father of
Lecha, and Laada, the father of Maresa, and the generations of the houses of
ephrath abak to the house of Esoba,
22 and Ioakim and the men of Chozeba and Ioas and Saraph,
who dwelt in Moab; and he turned them back, abederin athoukiin.
23 These were potters, dwelling in Nataim and Gadera; with
the king in his kingdom they grew strong and dwelt there.
24 The sons of Symeon: Namuel and Iamin, Iarib, Zare, Saul;
25 Salem his son, Mabasam his son, Masma his son, 26 Amuel
his son, Saboud his son, Zakchour his son, Semei his son.
27 And Semei had sixteen sons and three daughters; and
their brothers did not have many sons; and all their families did not multiply
like the sons of Judah.
28 And they dwelt in Bersabee and Sama and Molada and
Esersoual
29 and in Balaa and Boasom and Thoulad
30 and Bathuel and Erma and Seklag
31 and Baithmarchaboth and half of Sosim and the house of
Baroumseorim; these were their cities until King David.
32 And their settlements: Aitam and Enremmon and Thokkan
and Aisan, five cities.
33 And all their settlements were round about these cities
as far as Baal; this was their possession and their enrollment.
34 And Mosobab and Iemoloch and Iosia son of Amasia 35 and
Ioel, son of Saraia, son of Asiel,
36 and Elioenai and Iakaba and Iasouia and Asaia and Ediel
and Ismael and Banaia
37 and Zouza son of Sephei, son of Allon, son of Iedia, son
of Samari, son of Samaias.
38 These are the ones who went about by the names of rulers
in their generations; and in the houses of their families they were multiplied
into a multitude.
39 And they journeyed until they came to Gerara, as far as
the east of Gai, to seek pastures for their livestock;
40 and they found rich and good pastures, and the land was
broad before them, and there was peace and quiet, for those who dwelt there
before were of the sons of Ham.
41 And these who were written down by name came in the days
of Ezekias, king of Judah, and struck their houses and the Minaeans whom they
found there, and devoted them to destruction until this day, and dwelt in their
place, because there were pastures there for their livestock.
42 And of them, from the sons of Symeon, five hundred men
went to Mount Seir, and Phalettia and Noadia and Raphaia and Oziel, sons of
Iesi, were their leaders;
43 and they struck the remnant that was left of Amalek, and
dwelt there until this day.
Chapter 5
1 And the sons of Reuben the firstborn of Israel, for he
was the firstborn, but because he went up to his father's bed, he gave his
blessing to his son Joseph, son of Israel, and he was not enrolled in the
genealogy according to the birthright;
2 for Judah was mighty in strength even among his brothers,
and a ruler came from him, but the blessing was Joseph's.
3 The sons of Reuben the firstborn of Israel: Enoch and
Phallus, Arson and Charmi.
4 The sons of Joel: Semei and Banaia his son. And the sons
of Gog the son of Semei:
5 his son Micha, his son Recha, his son Baal,
6 his son Beera, whom Thaglathphalnasar king of Assyria
carried away; he was ruler of the Reubenites.
7 And his brothers by his family, in their enrollments
according to their generations: the chief Joel and Zacharia,
8 and Balek son of Ozuz, son of Sama, son of Joel; he dwelt
in Aroer and at Nabau and Beelmaon,
9 and toward the east he dwelt as far as the approaches of
the wilderness from the river Euphrates, because their cattle were many in the
land of Galaad.
10 And in the days of Saul they made war against their
neighbors, and those dwelling in tents fell into their hands, all of them
throughout the east of Galaad.
11 The sons of Gad dwelt opposite them in Basan as far as
Selcha.
12 Joel was the firstborn, and Sapham the second, and Iani
the scribe in Basan.
13 And their brothers according to the houses of their
families: Michael, Mosollam, and Sebee, and Ioree, and Iachan, and Zoue, and
Obed, seven.
14 These were the sons of Abichail, son of Uri, son of
Idai, son of Galaad, son of Michael, son of Isai, son of Iuri, son of Zabucham,
15 son of Abdiel, son of Guni, chief of the house of the
families.
16 They dwelt in Galaad, in Basan, and in their villages,
and in all the surrounding lands of Saron as far as its border.
17 The enrollment of all of them was in the days of Joatham
king of Judah and in the days of Jeroboam king of Israel.
18 The sons of Reuben and Gad and the half tribe of
Manasseh, of the sons of might, men bearing shields and sword and drawing the
bow and trained in war, were forty-four thousand seven hundred and sixty who
went out to battle.
19 And they made war with the Hagarenes and the Itureans
and the Naphisites and the Nadabites,
20 and they prevailed over them, and the Hagarites and all
their tents were given into their hands, because they cried to God in the
battle, and he heard them, because they trusted in him.
21 And they took captive their possessions: five thousand
camels, and two hundred fifty thousand sheep, two thousand donkeys, and a
hundred thousand souls of men;
22 for many fell slain, because the war was from God. And
they dwelt in their place until the captivity.
23 And the half tribe of Manasseh dwelt in the land from
Basan to Baalermon and Sanir and mount Aermon; and in Lebanon they multiplied.
24 And these were the heads of the house of their families:
Opher and Isei and Eliel and Esdriel and Iermia and Odouia and Iediel, mighty
men of valor, men of renown, chiefs of the houses of their families.
25 But they rebelled against the God of their fathers and
went whoring after the gods of the peoples of the land, whom God had removed
from before them.
26 And the God of Israel stirred up the spirit of Phaloch
king of Assyria and the spirit of Thaglathphalnasar king of Assyria, and he
carried away Reuben and Gaddi and the half tribe of Manasseh, and brought them
to Chalach and Chabor and to the river Gozan, unto this day.
27 The sons of Levi: Gedson, Kaath, and Merari.
28 And the sons of Kaath: Ambram and Issaar, Chebron and
Oziel.
29 And the sons of Ambram: Aaron and Moses and Mariam. And
the sons of Aaron: Nadab and Abiud, Eleazar and Ithamar.
30 Eleazar begot Phinees, Phinees begot Abisu,
31 Abisu begot Bokai, Bokai begot Ozi,
32 Ozi begot Zaraia, Zaraia begot Mariel,
33 and Mariel begot Amaria, and Amaria begot Achitob,
34 and Achitob begot Sadok, and Sadok begot Achimaas,
35 and Achimaas begot Azaria, and Azarias begot Ioanan,
36 and Ioanas begot Azarias; he served as priest in the
house which Solomon built in Jerusalem.
37 And Azaria begot Amaria, and Amaria begot Achitob,
38 and Achitob begot Sadok, and Sadok begot Salom,
39 and Salom begot Chelkias, and Chelkias begot Azaria,
40 and Azarias begot Saraia, and Saraias begot Iosadak.
41 And Iosadak went into the captivity with Judah and
Jerusalem by the hand of Nebuchadnezzar.
Chapter 6
1 The sons of Levi: Gedson, Kaath, and Merari.
2 And these are the names of the sons of Gedson: Lobeni and
Semei.
3 The sons of Kaath: Ambram and Issaar, Chebron and Oziel.
4 The sons of Merari: Mooli and Omousi. And these are the
families of Levi according to their families:
5 of Gedson: of Lobeni his son, Ieeth his son, Zemma his
son,
6 Ioach his son, Addi his son, Zara his son, Iethri his
son.
7 The sons of Kaath: Aminadab his son, Kore his son, Asir
his son,
8 Elkana his son, and Abiasaph his son, Asir his son,
9 Thaath his son, Ouriel his son, Ozia his son, Saul his
son.
10 And the sons of Elkana: Amasi and Achimoth,
11 Elkana his son, Souphi his son and Naath his son,
12 Eliab his son, Idaer his son, Elkana his son.
13 The sons of Samuel: the firstborn Sani and Abia.
14 The sons of Merari: Mooli, Lobeni his son, Semei his
son, Oza his son,
15 Somea his son, Angia his son, Asaia his son.
16 And these are they whom David set over the hands of the
singers in the house of the Lord at the resting of the ark,
17 and they were ministering before the tabernacle of the
house of testimony with instruments, until Solomon built the house of the Lord
in Jerusalem, and they stood according to their order over their services.
18 And these are those who stood, and their sons, of the
sons of Kaath: Aiman the psalm-singer, son of Joel, son of Samuel,
19 son of Elkana, son of Edad, son of Eliel, son of Thie,
20 son of Souph, son of Elkana, son of Meth, son of
Amasias,
21 son of Elkana, son of Joel, son of Azaria, son of
Saphania,
22 son of Thaath, son of Asir, son of Abiasaph, son of
Kore,
23 son of Issaar, son of Kaath, son of Levi, son of Israel.
24 And his brother Asaph, who stood at his right hand:
Asaph son of Barachia, son of Samaa,
25 son of Michael, son of Maasia, son of Melchia,
26 son of Athani, son of Zarai, son of Adia,
27 son of Aithan, son of Zamma, son of Semei,
28 son of Echa, son of Gedson, son of Levi.
29 And the sons of Merari their brother, on the left:
Aithan son of Kisai, son of Abdi, son of Maloch,
30 son of Asebi, son of Amessia, son of Chelkias,
31 son of Amasai, son of Bani, son of Semmer,
32 son of Mooli, son of Mousi, son of Merari, son of Levi.
33 And their brothers according to the houses of their
families, the Levites, were given for all the work of the service of the
tabernacle of the house of God.
34 And Aaron and his sons burned incense upon the altar of
whole burnt offerings and upon the altar of incense, for all the work of the
holy of holies, and to make atonement for Israel according to all that Moses
the servant of God commanded.
35 And these are the sons of Aaron: Eleazar his son,
Phinees his son, Abisou his son,
36 Bokai his son, Ozi his son, Zaraia his son,
37 Mariel his son, Amaria his son, Achitob his son,
38 Sadok his son, Achimaas his son.
39 And these are their dwellings in their villages within
their borders: to the sons of Aaron, to the family of the Kaathite, for to them
fell the lot
40 and they gave them Chebron in the land of Judah and its
surrounding pasture lands round about it;
41 but the fields of the city and its villages they gave to
Chaleb son of Iephonne.
42 And to the sons of Aaron they gave the cities of refuge:
Chebron, and Lobna with its pasture lands, and Selna with its pasture lands,
and Esthamo with its pasture lands,
43 and Ieththar with its pasture lands, and Dabir with its
pasture lands,
44 and Asan with its pasture lands, and Attan with its
pasture lands, and Basamys with its pasture lands,
45 and from the tribe of Benjamin, Gabee with its pasture
lands, and Galemeth with its pasture lands, and Anchoch with its pasture lands:
all their cities were thirteen cities according to their families.
46 And to the remaining sons of Kaath, from the families
out of the tribe, out of the half-tribe of Manasse, by lot, ten cities.
47 And to the sons of Gedson according to their families,
from the tribe of Issachar, from the tribe of Aser, from the tribe of

24 The gates were toward the four winds: toward the east,

30 And some of the sons of the priests were compounders of
the ointment and for the spices.
31 And Mattathias of the Levites were in the trust over the
works of the sacrifice of the pan of the great priest.
32 And Banaias the Kaathite, of their brothers, was over
the loaves of the presentation, to prepare them sabbath by sabbath.
33 And these were the singers, heads of the families of the
Levites, with courses assigned, for day and night the works were upon them.
34 These were heads of the families of the Levites
according to their generations, chiefs; these dwelt in Jerusalem.
35 And in Gabaon dwelt the father of Gabaon, Iiel, and his
wife's name was Moocha;
36 and his firstborn son was Abadon, and Sir and Kis and
Baal and Ner and Nadab,
37 and Gedour and a brother, and Zacharia and Makelloth.
38 And Makelloth begot Samaa. And these dwelt among their
brothers in Jerusalem, with their brothers.

Chapter 10
1 And the Philistines fought against Israel, and they fled
from before the Philistines, and fell slain on Mount Gilboa.
2 And the Philistines pursued after Saul and after his
sons, and the Philistines struck down Jonathan and Abinadab and Malchishua, the
sons of Saul.
3 And the battle pressed heavily upon Saul, and the archers
found him with their bows and wounds, and he was wounded by the bows.
4 And Saul said to his armor-bearer, "Draw your sword
and pierce me through with it, lest these uncircumcised come and mock me."
But his armor-bearer would not, for he was greatly afraid; and Saul took the
sword and fell upon it.
5 And his armor-bearer saw that Saul was dead, and he too
fell upon his sword and died.
6 So Saul died, and his three sons, on that day, and all
his house died together.
7 And every man of Israel who was in the valley saw that
Israel had fled and that Saul and his sons were dead, and they abandoned their
cities and fled; and the Philistines came and dwelt in them.
8 And it came to pass on the next day that the Philistines
came to strip the slain, and they found Saul and his sons fallen on Mount
Gilboa.
9 And they stripped him and took his head and his armor,
and sent them around into the land of the Philistines, to bring the good news
to their idols and to the people.
10 And they put his armor in the house of their god, and
his head they put in the house of Dagon.
11 And all who dwelt in Gilead heard all that the
Philistines had done to Saul and to Israel.
12 And every mighty man arose out of Gilead, and they took
the body of Saul and the bodies of his sons and brought them to Jabesh, and
buried their bones under the oak in Jabesh, and fasted seven days.
13 So Saul died in his transgressions, which he committed
against the Lord, contrary to the word of the Lord, because he did not keep it;
for Saul inquired of the medium to seek counsel, and Samuel the prophet
answered him;
14 and he did not seek the Lord, and He killed him and
turned the kingdom over to David the son of Jesse.
Chapter 11
1 And all Israel came to David at Hebron, saying,
"Behold, we are your bones and your flesh.
2 And yesterday and the day before, while Saul was king, it
was you who led Israel out and brought them in, and the Lord your God said to
you, 'You shall shepherd my people Israel, and you shall be leader over
Israel.'"
3 And all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron,
and King David made a covenant with them in Hebron before the Lord, and they
anointed David as king over Israel according to the word of the Lord by the
hand of Samuel.
4 And the king and the men of Israel went to Jerusalem, and
there were the Jebusites, who inhabited the land.
5 And the inhabitants of Jebus said to David, "You
shall not enter here." But he seized beforehand the stronghold of Zion.
6 And David said, "Whoever strikes a Jebusite first
shall be chief and commander." And Joab son of Zeruiah went up against it
first, and became chief.
7 And David dwelt in the stronghold; therefore he called it
the City of David.
8 And he built the city round about; and he fought and took
the city.
9 And David went on advancing and growing great, and the
Lord Almighty was with him.
10 And these are the chiefs of the mighty men who belonged
to David, who strengthened themselves with him in his kingdom, together with
all Israel, to make him king according to the word of the Lord over Israel.
11 And this is the number of David's mighty men: Jeshbaal
son of Hachamani, first of the thirty; he drew his sword once against three hundred
slain at one time. —
12 And after him, Eleazar son of Dodai the Ahohite; he was
among the three mighty men.
13 He was with David at Phasodomin, and the Philistines
were gathered there for battle, and there was a portion of the field full of
barley, and the people fled from before the Philistines.
14 And he stood in the midst of the portion and saved it
and struck down the Philistines, and the Lord wrought a great deliverance.
15 And three of the thirty chiefs went down to the rock, to
David, to the cave of Adullam, and the camp of the Philistines was encamped in
the valley of the giants.
16 And David was then in the stronghold, and the garrison
of the Philistines was then in Bethlehem.
17 And David longed and said, "Who will give me water
to drink from the cistern of Bethlehem that is by the gate?"
18 And the three broke through the camp of the Philistines
and drew water from the cistern in Bethlehem that was by the gate, and they
took it and came to David. But David would not drink it, and poured it out to
the Lord,
19 and said, "God be merciful to me, that I should do
this thing! Shall I drink the blood of these men, at the risk of their lives?
For at the risk of their lives they brought it." And he would not drink
it. These things the three mighty men did.
20 And Abishai the brother of Joab, he was chief of the
three; he drew his sword against three hundred slain at one time, and he was
renowned among the three.
21 Of the three he was more honored than the two, and he
became their chief, but he did not attain to the three.
22 And Benaiah son of Jehoiada, the son of a mighty
man—many were his deeds—from Kabzeel; he struck down the two ariels of Moab;
and he went down and struck the lion in the pit on a day of snow.
23 And he struck down the Egyptian, a man of imposing
stature, five cubits tall; and in the hand of the Egyptian was a spear like a
weavers' beam, and Benaiah went down against him with a staff and snatched the
spear from the hand of the Egyptian and killed him with his own spear.
24 These things Benaiah son of Jehoiada did, and he had a
name among the three mighty men.
25 He was more honored than the thirty, but he did not
attain to the three; and David set him over his household.

1 And these are those who came to David at Soklag, while he
was still kept away from the face of Saul son of Kish, and these were among the
mighty men, helping in war,
2 and with the bow, from the right hand and from the left,
and slingers with stones and with bows: of the brothers of Saul, from Benjamin,
3 the leader Achiezer, and Joas son of Asma the Gebothite,

God of our fathers see it and rebuke it."
19 And a spirit clothed Amasai, leader of the thirty, and
he said, "Go, you and your people, David son of Jesse: peace, peace to
you, and peace to your helpers, for your God has helped you." And David
received them and appointed them leaders of the forces.
20 And from Manasseh some joined David when the foreigners
came against Saul for war; but he did not help them, for it came about by

22 And they fought together with David against the raiding
band, for they were all mighty in strength, and they were commanders in the
army in the force;
23 for day by day they came to David, into a great force,
like a force of God.
24 And these are the names of the leaders of the army who
came to David at Hebron, to turn the kingdom of Saul over to him according to
the word of the Lord.

hundred, mighty in strength, men renowned according to the houses of their
fathers.
32 And of the half tribe of Manasseh: eighteen thousand,
who were designated by name to make David king.
33 And of the sons of Issachar, having understanding of the
times, knowing what Israel should do, for their leaders: two hundred, and all
their brothers with them.
34 And of Zebulun, those going out for the battle line of
war with all weapons of war: fifty thousand, to help David without wavering.
35 And of Naphtali: a thousand leaders, and with them, with
shields and spears, thirty-seven thousand.
36 And of the Danites, arraying themselves for war:
twenty-eight thousand eight hundred.
37 And of Asher, going out to help in war: forty thousand.
38 And from beyond the Jordan, of Reuben and Gad and of the
half tribe of Manasseh, with all weapons of war: one hundred and twenty
thousand.
39 All these were men of war, drawing up in battle order,
with a peaceful heart, and they came to Hebron to make David king over all
Israel; and the rest of Israel were of one heart to make David king.
40 And they were there three days, eating and drinking, for
their brothers had made provision for them.
41 And those bordering on them, as far as Issachar and
Zebulun and Naphtali, brought them food upon camels and donkeys and mules and
upon calves: flour, cakes of figs, raisins, wine and oil, calves and sheep in
abundance, for there was joy in Israel.
Chapter 13
1 And David took counsel with the commanders of thousands
and the commanders of hundreds, with every leader,
2 and David said to the whole assembly of Israel, "If
it seems good to you and if it be prospered by the Lord our God, let us send to
our brothers who are left in all the land of Israel, and with them the priests,
the Levites, in the cities of their possession, and let them be gathered to us,
3 and let us bring over the ark of our God to us; for they
did not seek it from the days of Saul."
4 And all the assembly said to do so, for the word was
right in the eyes of all the people.
5 And David assembled all Israel, from the borders of Egypt
even to the entrance of Hamath, to bring in the ark of God from the city of
Jarim.
6 And David brought it up, and all Israel went up to the
city of David, which belonged to Judah, to bring up from there the ark of God,
the Lord who sits upon the cherubim, where his name was invoked.
7 And they set the ark of God upon a new cart from the
house of Aminadab, and Oza and his brothers were driving the cart.
8 And David and all Israel were making merry before God
with all their might, with singers and with lyres and with harps, with timbrels
and with cymbals and with trumpets.
9 And they came as far as the threshing floor, and Oza
stretched out his hand to hold the ark, because the calf was tilting it.
10 And the Lord was enraged with anger against Oza and
struck him there because he stretched out his hand upon the ark, and he died
there before God.
11 And David was despondent because the Lord had broken out
in a breach against Oza, and he called that place Breach of Oza to this day.
12 And David feared God on that day, saying, "How
shall I bring the ark of God in to myself?"
13 And David did not turn the ark aside to himself into the
city of David, but diverted it to the house of Abeddara the Gethite.
14 And the ark of God remained in the house of Abeddara
three months; and God blessed Abeddaram and all that was his.
Chapter 14
1 And Hiram king of Tyre sent messengers to David, and
cedar timbers, and builders of walls, and carpenters of wood, to build him a
house.
2 And David knew that the Lord had established him over
Israel, because his kingdom was exalted on high for the sake of his people
Israel.
3 And David took more wives in Jerusalem, and more sons and
daughters were born to David.
4 And these are the names of those born to him, who were
his in Jerusalem: Samaa, Isobaam, Nathan, Solomon,
5 and Ibaar and Elisae and Eliphalet,
6 and Nage and Naphag and Ianouou,
7 and Elisamae and Balegdae and Eliphalet.
8 And the foreigners heard that David had been anointed
king over all Israel, and all the foreigners went up to seek David. And David
heard, and went out to meet them.
9 And the foreigners came and gathered together in the
valley of the giants.
10 And David inquired of God, saying, Shall I go up against
the foreigners, and will you give them into my hands? And the Lord said to him,
Go up, and I will give them into your hands.
11 And he went up to Baalpharasin, and David struck them
there; and David said, God has broken through my enemies by my hand like a
breaking through of water; therefore he called the name of that place Breach of
Pharasin.
12 And they abandoned their gods there, and David gave
orders to burn them with fire.
13 And the foreigners again gathered once more in the
valley of the giants.
14 And David inquired again of God, and God said to him,
You shall not go after them; turn away from them, and you shall come upon them
near the pear trees.
15 And it shall be, when you hear the sound of the rustling
of the tops of the pear trees, then you shall go out to the battle, for God has
gone out before you to strike the camp of the foreigners.
16 And he did as God commanded him, and he struck the camp
of the foreigners from Gabaon as far as Gazara.
17 And the name of David went out into all the land, and
the Lord put the fear of him upon all the nations.
Chapter 15
1 And he made for himself houses in the city of David; and
he prepared the place for the ark of God and made a tent for it.
2 Then David said, "No one may carry the ark of God
except the Levites, for the Lord chose them to carry the ark of the Lord and to
minister to him forever."
3 And David assembled all Israel to Jerusalem to bring up
the ark of the Lord to the place which he had prepared for it.
4 And David gathered the sons of Aaron and the Levites.
5 Of the sons of Kohath: Uriel the chief and his brothers,
one hundred and twenty.
6 Of the sons of Merari: Asaiah the chief and his brothers,
two hundred and fifty.
7 Of the sons of Gershom: Joel the chief and his brothers,
one hundred and fifty.
8 Of the sons of Elizaphan: Shemaiah the chief and his
brothers, two hundred.
9 Of the sons of Hebron: Eliel the chief and his brothers,
eighty.
10 Of the sons of Uzziel: Amminadab the chief and his
brothers, one hundred and twelve.
11 And David called Zadok and Abiathar the priests and the
Levites — Uriel, Asaiah, Joel, Shemaiah, Eliel, Amminadab
12 and said to them, "You are the heads of the
families of the Levites; sanctify yourselves, you and your brothers, and you
shall bring up the ark of the God of Israel to the place I have prepared for
it.
13 For because you were not there before, our God broke out
against us, because we did not seek him according to the ordinance."
14 And the priests and the Levites sanctified themselves to
bring up the ark of the God of Israel.
15 And the sons of the Levites took up the ark of God, as
Moses had commanded by the word of God according to the scripture, with
carrying-poles upon their shoulders.
16 And David said to the chiefs of the Levites,
"Appoint their brothers the singers with instruments of song, harps and
lyres and cymbals, to sound aloud with a voice of gladness."
17 And the Levites appointed Heman son of Joel; from his
brothers, Asaph son of Berechiah; and from the sons of Merari their brothers,
Ethan son of Kishi.
18 And with them their brothers of the second rank:
Zechariah and Uzziel and Shemiramoth and Jehiel and Unni and Eliab and Benaiah
and Maaseiah and Mattithiah and Eliphelehu and Mikneiah and Obed-edom and Jeiel
and Uzziah, the gatekeepers.
19 And the singers: Heman, Asaph, and Ethan, with bronze
cymbals to make themselves heard;
20 Zechariah and Uzziel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Unni, Eliab,
Maaseiah, Benaiah with harps according to alamoth;
21 and Mattithiah and Eliphelehu and Mikneiah and Obed-edom
and Jeiel and Uzziah with lyres on the sheminith, to lead.
22 And Chenaniah, chief of the Levites, was chief of the
songs, because he was skilled.
23 And Berechiah and Elkanah were gatekeepers for the ark.
24 And Shebaniah and Jehoshaphat and Nethanel and Amasai
and Zechariah and Benaiah and Eliezer, the priests, sounded the trumpets before
the ark of God. And Obed-edom and Jehiah were gatekeepers for the ark of God.
25 And David and the elders of Israel and the commanders of
thousands went to bring up the ark of the covenant of the Lord from the house
of Obed-edom with gladness.
26 And it came to pass, when God strengthened the Levites
carrying the ark of the covenant of the Lord, that they sacrificed seven bulls
and seven rams.
27 And David was clothed in a robe of fine linen, and all
the Levites carrying the ark of the covenant of the Lord, and the singers, and
Chenaniah the chief of the songs of the singers; and upon David was a robe of
fine linen.
28 And all Israel brought up the ark of the covenant of the
Lord with shouting and with the sound of the shofar and with trumpets and with
cymbals, sounding aloud with harps and with lyres.
29 And it came to pass, as the ark of the covenant of the
Lord came to the city of David, that Michal daughter of Saul leaned out through
the window and saw King David dancing and making merry, and she despised him in
her heart.
Chapter 16
1 And they brought in the ark of God and set it in the
midst of the tent which David had pitched for it, and they offered whole burnt
offerings and peace offerings before God.
2 And David finished offering the whole burnt offerings and
peace offerings, and he blessed the people in the name of the Lord.
3 And he distributed to every man of Israel, from man to
woman, to each man one baker's loaf and a sweet cake.
4 And he appointed before the ark of the covenant of the
Lord some of the Levites to minister, to sound aloud, and to give thanks and to
praise the Lord, the God of Israel:
5 Asaph the leader, and second to him Zacharias, Jiel,
Semiramoth, Jiel, Mattathias, Eliab, and Banaias, and Abdedom, and Jiel, with
instruments, harps and lyres; and Asaph sounding with cymbals;
6 and Banaias and Oziel the priests with the trumpets
continually before the ark of the covenant of God.
7 On that day David then appointed, at the beginning, to
praise the Lord by the hand of Asaph and his brethren:
8 Give thanks to the Lord, call upon him by his name, make
known among the peoples his doings.
9 Sing to him and hymn to him; recount to all his wonders
which the Lord has done.
10 Praise in his holy name; the heart that seeks his good
pleasure shall rejoice.
11 Seek the Lord and be strong; seek his face continually.
12 Remember his wonders which he has done, his marvels and
the judgments of his mouth,
13 O seed of Israel his servants, sons of Jacob his chosen
ones.
14 He is the Lord our God; his judgments are in all the
earth.
15 He remembers forever his covenant, his word which he
commanded to a thousand generations,
16 which he covenanted with Abraham, and his oath to Isaac.
17 He established it for Jacob as an ordinance, for Israel
an everlasting covenant,
18 saying, To you I will give the land of Canaan, the
allotment of your inheritance,
19 when they were few in number, when they were made small
and sojourned in it.
20 And they went from nation to nation, and from one
kingdom to another people.
21 He allowed no man to oppress them, and he rebuked kings
for their sake:
22 Touch not my anointed ones, and do no evil among my
prophets.
23 Sing to the Lord, all the earth; proclaim from day to
day his salvation.
25 For great is the Lord and greatly to be praised; he is
fearful above all gods.
26 For all the gods of the nations are idols, but our God
made heaven.
27 Glory and praise are before his face, strength and
boasting in his place.
28 Give to the Lord, you families of the nations, give to
the Lord glory and strength.
29 Give to the Lord the glory of his name; take gifts and
bring them before his face, and worship the Lord in his holy courts.
30 Let all the earth fear before his face; let the earth be
established and not be shaken.
31 Let heaven rejoice, and let the earth exult, and let
them say among the nations, The Lord reigns.
32 The sea with its fullness shall resound, and the tree of
the field and all that is in it.
33 Then shall the trees of the forest rejoice before the
face of the Lord, for he has come to judge the earth.
34 Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his mercy
endures forever.
35 And say, Save us, O God of our salvation, and deliver us
from the nations, that we may praise your holy name and boast in your praises.
36 Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, from everlasting
to everlasting. And all the people shall say, Amen. And they praised the Lord.
37 And they left there before the ark of the covenant of
the Lord Asaph and his brethren, to minister before the ark continually, day by
day;
38 and Abdedom and his brethren, sixty-eight; and Abdedom
son of Idithon and Ossa as gatekeepers.
39 And Sadok the priest and his brethren the priests were
before the tent of the Lord in Bama, which is in Gabaon,
40 to offer whole burnt offerings to the Lord upon the
altar of whole burnt offerings continually, morning and evening, according to
all that is written in the law of the Lord, all that he commanded the sons of
Israel by the hand of Moses the servant of God;
41 and with him Aiman and Idithon and the rest who were
chosen by name to praise the Lord, for his mercy endures forever;
42 and with them trumpets and cymbals for sounding aloud,
and instruments for the songs of God; the sons of Idithon were at the gate.
43 And all the people went, each to his own house, and
David returned to bless his house.
Chapter 17
1 And it came to pass, when David dwelt in his house, that
David said to Nathan the prophet, "Behold, I dwell in a house of cedar,
but the ark of the covenant of the Lord is under curtains of skins."
2 And Nathan said to David, "Do all that is in your
soul, for God is with you."
3 And it came to pass in that night that the word of the
Lord came to Nathan, saying,
4 "Go and say to David my servant, Thus says the Lord:
You shall not build me a house for me to dwell in;
5 for I have not dwelt in a house from the day that I
brought up Israel until this day, but I have been in a tent and in a lodging.
6 In all the places through which I passed among all
Israel, did I ever speak to one tribe of Israel, whom I appointed to shepherd
my people, saying, Why have you not built me a house of cedar?
7 And now thus shall you say to my servant David: Thus says
the Lord Almighty: I took you from the sheepfold, from following the flocks, to
be leader over my people Israel;
8 and I have been with you in all places wherever you went,
and I have destroyed all your enemies from before you, and I have made you a
name like the name of the great ones who are upon the earth.
9 And I will appoint a place for my people Israel, and I
will plant him, and he shall dwell by himself and shall be anxious no more; and
injustice shall no longer humble him, as at the beginning,
10 and since the days when I appointed judges over my
people Israel. And I have humbled all your enemies; and I will increase you,
and the Lord will build you a house.
11 And it shall be, when your days are fulfilled and you
sleep with your fathers, that I will raise up your seed after you, who shall be
of your body, and I will establish his kingdom.
12 He shall build me a house, and I will set up his throne
forever.
13 I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son;
and I will not withdraw my mercy from him, as I withdrew it from those who were
before you.
14 And I will confirm him in my house and in his kingdom
forever, and his throne shall be established forever."
15 According to all these words and according to all this
vision, so Nathan spoke to David.
16 And King David came and sat before the Lord and said,
"Who am I, O Lord God, and what is my house, that you have loved me
forever?
17 And these things were small in your sight, O God, and
you have spoken concerning the house of your servant from afar off, and you
have looked upon me as one looks upon a man, and have exalted me, O Lord God.
18 What more shall David add to you to glorify you? For you
know your servant.
19 And according to your heart you have done all this
greatness.
20 O Lord, there is none like you, and there is none
besides you, according to all that we have heard with our ears.
21 And there is no other nation on the earth like your
people Israel, whom God guided so as to redeem for himself a people, to make
for himself a name great and glorious, to cast out nations from before your
people, whom you redeemed out of Egypt.
22 And you have given your people Israel to yourself as a
people forever, and you, O Lord, became their God.
23 And now, O Lord, let your word which you spoke to your
servant and concerning his house be confirmed forever,
24 while men say, Lord, Lord Almighty, God of Israel—and
let the house of David your servant be established before you.
25 For you, O Lord, have opened the ear of your servant,
that you would build him a house; therefore your servant has found occasion to
pray before your face.
26 And now, O Lord, you yourself are God, and you have
spoken these good things concerning your servant;
27 and now you have begun to bless the house of your
servant, that it may be forever before you; for you, O Lord, have blessed it,
so bless it forever."
Chapter 18
1 And it came to pass after these things that David struck
the Philistines and routed them, and he took Gath and its villages out of the
hand of the Philistines.
2 And he struck Moab, and the Moabites became servants to
David, bringing gifts.
3 And David struck Hadadezer king of Zobah of Hamath, as he
was going to establish his hand over the river Euphrates.
4 And David captured from them a thousand chariots and
seven thousand horses and twenty thousand foot soldiers; and David hamstrung
all the chariot horses, but kept back from them a hundred chariots.
5 And the Syrian came from Damascus to help Hadadezer king
of Zobah, and David struck down twenty-two thousand men among the Syrians.
6 And David placed a garrison in Syria near Damascus, and
they became servants to David, bringing gifts. And the Lord saved David in all
things wherever he went.
7 And David took the golden collars that were on the
servants of Hadadezer, and he brought them to Jerusalem.
8 And from Metebahath and from the choice cities of
Hadadezer David took very much bronze; from it Solomon made the bronze sea and
the pillars and the bronze vessels.
9 And Tou king of Hamath heard that David had struck all
the force of Hadadezer king of Zobah,
10 and he sent Hadoram his son to King David to ask him
concerning peace and to bless him because he had fought against Hadadezer and
struck him, for Tou was a man at war with Hadadezer; and all the vessels of
silver and gold.
11 And these David consecrated to the Lord, together with
the silver and the gold which he had taken from all the nations: from Idumea
and Moab and from the sons of Ammon and from the Philistines and from Amalek.
12 And Abishai son of Zeruiah struck Idumea in the Valley
of Salt, eighteen thousand,
13 and he placed garrisons in the valley; and all the
Idumeans became servants of David. And the Lord saved David in all things
wherever he went.
14 And David reigned over all Israel, and he was executing
judgment and righteousness for all his people.
15 And Joab son of Zeruiah was over the army, and
Jehoshaphat son of Ahilud was recorder,
16 and Zadok son of Ahitub and Ahimelech son of Abiathar
were priests, and Shavsha was scribe,
17 and Benaiah son of Jehoiada was over the Cherethites and
the Pelethites, and the sons of David were the chief officials at the king's
side.
Chapter 19
1 And it came to pass after these things that Naas the king
of the children of Ammon died, and Anan his son reigned in his place.
2 And David said, "I will show kindness to Anan the
son of Naas, as his father showed kindness to me." And David sent
messengers to comfort him concerning his father. And the servants of David came
into the land of the children of Ammon to comfort him.
3 And the rulers of Ammon said to Anan, "Is it to
honor your father before you that David has sent comforters to you? Have not
his servants come to you so that they might search out the city and spy out the
land?"
4 And Anan took the servants of David and shaved them and
cut off half of their garments up to the hip, and sent them away.
5 And men came to report to David concerning the men, and
he sent to meet them, for they were greatly dishonored; and the king said,
"Stay in Jericho until your beards have grown, and then return."
6 And the children of Ammon saw that the people of David
had been put to shame, and Anan and the children of Ammon sent a thousand
talents of silver to hire for themselves chariots and horsemen from Syria of
Mesopotamia and from Syria Moocha and from Soba.
7 And they hired for themselves thirty-two thousand
chariots, and the king of Mocha and his people; and they came and encamped
opposite Maidaba, and the children of Ammon gathered from their cities and came
to make war.
8 And David heard, and sent Joab and all the army of the
mighty men.
9 And the children of Ammon came out and drew up for battle
by the gate of the city, and the kings who had come encamped by themselves in
the plain.
10 And Joab saw that they had set themselves against him to
fight him in front and behind, and he chose from all the young men of Israel,
and they drew up against the Syrian.
11 And the rest of the people he gave into the hand of
Abessa his brother, and they drew up opposite the children of Ammon.
12 And he said, "If the Syrian prevails over me, then
you shall be my deliverance; and if the children of Ammon prevail over you,
then I will save you.
13 Be courageous, and let us be strong for our people and
for the cities of our God, and the Lord will do what is good in his eyes."
14 And Joab and the people with him drew up against the
Syrians for battle, and they fled from him.
15 And the children of Ammon saw that the Syrians had fled,
and they too fled from before Joab and from before Abessa his brother, and came
into the city. And Joab came to Jerusalem.
16 And the Syrian saw that Israel had routed him, and he
sent messengers, and they brought out the Syrians from beyond the river, and
Sophach, commander-in-chief of the army of Adraazar, was at their head.
17 And it was reported to David, and he gathered all Israel
and crossed the Jordan and came upon them and drew up against them; and the
Syrian drew up opposite David, and they fought him.
18 And the Syrian fled from before David, and David killed
of the Syrians seven thousand chariots and forty thousand foot soldiers; and he
killed Sophach the commander-in-chief of the army.
19 And the servants of Adraazar saw that they had been
defeated before Israel, and they made peace with David and served him; and the
Syrian was no longer willing to help the children of Ammon.
Chapter 20
1 And it came to pass in the following year, at the time of
the going forth of kings, that Joab led out all the force of the army, and they
ravaged the land of the children of Ammon; and he came and besieged Rabbah. But
David remained in Jerusalem; and Joab struck Rabbah and destroyed it.
2 And David took the crown of Molchol their king from off
his head, and its weight was found to be a talent of gold, and in it was a
precious stone, and it was set upon the head of David; and he brought out very
much spoil from the city.
3 And he brought out the people who were in it and cut them
with saws and with iron axes; and thus David did to all the children of Ammon.
And David and all his people returned to Jerusalem.
4 And it came to pass after this that there was again war
in Gazer with the Philistines. Then Sobochai the Husathite struck Saphu, one of
the sons of the giants, and humbled him.
5 And there was again war with the Philistines. And Ellanan
the son of Jair struck Leemi the brother of Goliath the Gittite, and the shaft
of his spear was like a weavers' beam.
6 And there was again war in Gath, and there was a man of
enormous size, and his fingers and toes were six and six, twenty-four in all,
and he was a descendant of the giants.
7 And he reproached Israel, and Jonathan the son of Samaa,
David's brother, struck him down.
8 These were born to Rapha in Gath; all were four giants,
and they fell by the hand of David and by the hand of his servants.
Chapter 21
1 And an adversary stood up against Israel and incited
David to number Israel.
2 And King David said to Joab and to the commanders of the
army, "Go, number Israel from Beersheba even to Dan, and bring it to me,
and I will know their number."
3 And Joab said, "May the Lord add to his people a
hundredfold as many as they are, and may the eyes of my lord the king see it;
all are servants to my lord. Why does my lord seek this thing? Let it not
become a cause of sin to Israel."
4 But the word of the king prevailed over Joab. And Joab
went out and passed through all the territory of Israel and came to Jerusalem.
5 And Joab gave the number of the census of the people to
David, and all Israel was one million one hundred thousand men who drew the sword,
and Judah four hundred and eighty thousand men who drew the sword.
6 But Levi and Benjamin he did not number among them,
because the word of the king was grievous to Joab.
7 And it appeared evil in the sight of God concerning this
matter, and he struck Israel.
8 And David said to God, "I have sinned greatly, in
that I have done this thing; and now, take away, I pray, the wickedness of your
servant, for I have acted very foolishly."
9 And the Lord spoke to Gad, David's seer, saying,
10 "Go and speak to David, saying, Thus says the Lord:
Three things I hold up against you; choose for yourself one of them, and I will
do it to you."
11 And Gad came to David and said to him, "Thus says
the Lord: Choose for yourself
12 either three years of famine, or three months of fleeing
before your enemies while the sword of your enemies destroys, or three days of
the sword of the Lord and death in the land, with the angel of the Lord
destroying throughout all the inheritance of Israel. And now see what answer I
shall return to him who sent me word."
13 And David said to Gad, "All three are very
distressing to me; let me fall now into the hands of the Lord, for his mercies
are very great, but into the hands of men let me not fall."
14 So the Lord sent death upon Israel, and there fell of
Israel seventy thousand men.
15 And God sent an angel to Jerusalem to destroy it. And as
he was destroying, the Lord saw and repented of the evil, and said to the
destroying angel, "It is enough for you; stay your hand." And the
angel of the Lord was standing at the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.
16 And David lifted up his eyes and saw the angel of the
Lord standing between earth and heaven, with his sword drawn in his hand,
stretched out over Jerusalem; and David and the elders, clothed in sackcloth,
fell upon their faces.
17 And David said to God, "Was it not I who commanded
to number the people? And I am the one who sinned; I have done great evil. But
these sheep—what have they done? O Lord God, let your hand be upon me and upon
my father's house, and not upon your people for destruction, O Lord."
18 And the angel of the Lord told Gad to say to David that
he should go up to set up an altar to the Lord on the threshing floor of Ornan
the Jebusite.
19 And David went up according to the word of Gad, which he
spoke in the name of the Lord.
20 And Ornan turned and saw the king, and his four sons
with him hid themselves; and Ornan was threshing wheat.
21 And David came to Ornan, and Ornan came out of the
threshing floor and did obeisance to David with his face to the ground.
22 And David said to Ornan, "Give me the place of your
threshing floor, and I will build upon it an altar to the Lord; give it to me
for its full price in silver, and the plague shall cease from the people."
23 And Ornan said to David, "Take it for yourself, and
let my lord the king do what is good in his eyes; behold, I give the oxen for a
whole burnt offering, and the plow and the carts for wood, and the wheat for a
sacrifice, I give it all."
24 And King David said to Ornan, "No, for I will
surely buy it for its full price in silver; for I will not take what is yours
for the Lord, to offer up a whole burnt offering to the Lord without
cost."
25 And David gave to Ornan for his place six hundred
shekels of gold by weight.
26 And David built there an altar to the Lord and offered
up whole burnt offerings and peace offerings; and he cried to the Lord, and he
answered him with fire from heaven upon the altar of the whole burnt offering,
and it consumed the whole burnt offering.
27 And the Lord spoke to the angel, and he put back the
sword into its sheath. —
28 At that time, when David saw that the Lord had answered
him at the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite, he sacrificed there.
29 And the tabernacle of the Lord, which Moses made in the
wilderness, and the altar of whole burnt offerings were at that time in the
high place at Gibeon;
30 and David was not able to go before it to seek God,
because he was terrified by the sword of the angel of the Lord.
Chapter 22
1 And David said, "This is the house of the Lord God,
and this is the altar for burnt offering for Israel."
2 And David commanded to gather all the sojourners in the
land of Israel, and he appointed stonecutters to hew dressed stones to build a
house for God.
3 And David prepared much iron for the nails of the doors
and of the gates, and the hinges, and bronze in abundance—there was no weighing
it
4 and cedar timbers without number, for the Sidonians and
the Tyrians brought cedar timbers in abundance to David.
5 And David said, "Solomon my son is a tender young
boy, and the house to be built for the Lord must be exceedingly magnificent,
for name and for glory in all the earth; I will make preparation for it."
So David prepared abundantly before his death.
6 And he called Solomon his son and commanded him to build
the house for the Lord God of Israel.
7 And David said to Solomon, "My child, it was in my
heart to build a house for the name of the Lord God.
8 But the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 'You have
shed blood in abundance and have made great wars; you shall not build a house
for my name, because you have shed much blood upon the earth before me.
9 Behold, a son is being born to you; he shall be a man of
rest, and I will give him rest from all his enemies round about, for Solomon
shall be his name, and I will give peace and quiet upon Israel in his days.
10 He shall build a house for my name, and he shall be to
me a son, and I to him a father, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom
in Israel forever.'
11 And now, my son, the Lord will be with you, and he will
prosper you, and you shall build a house for the Lord your God, as he spoke
concerning you.
12 Only may the Lord give you wisdom and understanding and
strengthen you over Israel, both to keep and to do the law of the Lord your
God.
13 Then you will prosper, if you keep to do the statutes
and the judgments which the Lord commanded Moses concerning Israel. Be a man
and be strong; do not fear nor be dismayed.
14 And behold, according to my poverty I have prepared for
the house of the Lord one hundred thousand talents of gold and a thousand
thousand talents of silver, and bronze and iron without weighing, for it is in
abundance; and I have prepared timber and stones, and to these you shall add.
15 And with you in abundance are workers of works:
craftsmen and builders of stone and carpenters of wood, and everyone skilled in
every work.
16 Of gold, of silver, of bronze and of iron there is no
number. Arise and act, and the Lord be with you."
17 And David commanded all the rulers of Israel to help
Solomon his son:
18 "Is not the Lord with you? And he has given you
rest on every side, for he has given into your hands those dwelling in the
land, and the land has been subdued before the Lord and before his people.
19 Now give your hearts and your souls to seek the Lord
your God, and arise and build a sanctuary for the Lord your God, to bring in
the ark of the covenant of the Lord and the holy vessels of God into the house
being built for the name of the Lord."
Chapter 23
1 And David was old and full of days, and he made Solomon
his son king in his stead over Israel.
2 And he gathered together all the rulers of Israel, and
the priests, and the Levites.
3 And the Levites were numbered from thirty years old and
upward, and their number by their heads was thirty-eight thousand men.
4 Of these, twenty-four thousand were overseers of the
works of the house of the Lord, and six thousand were scribes and judges,
5 and four thousand were gatekeepers, and four thousand
praised the Lord with the instruments which he made to praise the Lord.
6 And David divided them into daily courses, for the sons
of Levi: for Gedson, Kaath, and Merari.
7 And for Parosom: for Edan and for Semei.
8 The sons of Edan: Iiel the chief, and Zethom, and Joel,
three.
9 The sons of Semei: Salomith, and Iiel, and Aidan, three.
These were the chiefs of the families of Edan.
10 And for the sons of Semei: Ieth, and Ziza, and Joas, and
Beria: these were the sons of Semei, four.
11 And Ieth was the chief, and Ziza the second; and Joas
and Beria did not multiply sons, and they became one father's house in one
reckoning.
12 The sons of Kaath: Ambram, Issaar, Chebron, Oziel, four.
13 The sons of Ambram: Aaron and Moses. And Aaron was set
apart to be consecrated to the holy of holies, he and his sons forever, to burn
incense before the Lord, to minister and to pray in his name forever.
14 And Moses was a man of God; his sons were reckoned to
the tribe of Levi.
15 The sons of Moses: Gersam and Eliezer.
16 The sons of Gersam: Soubael the chief.
17 And the sons of Eliezer were: Raabia the chief; and
Eliezer had no other sons. And the sons of Raabia increased greatly.
18 The sons of Issaar: Salomoth the chief.
19 The sons of Chebron: Idoud the chief, Amadia the second,
Oziel the third, Ikemias the fourth.
20 The sons of Oziel: Michas the chief, and Isia the
second.
21The sons of Merari: Mooli and Mousi. The sons of Mooli:
Eleazar and Kis.
22 And Eleazar died, and he had no sons, but only
daughters; and the sons of Kis, their brothers, took them.
23 The sons of Mousi: Mooli, and Eder, and Iarimoth, three.
24 These were the sons of Levi according to the houses of
their families, chiefs of their families according to their reckoning,
according to the number of their names, by their heads, doing the works of the
service of the house of the Lord, from twenty years old and upward.
25 For David said, The Lord God of Israel has given rest to
his people, and he has taken up his dwelling in Jerusalem forever.
26 And the Levites were no longer to carry the tabernacle
and all its vessels for its service;
27 for in the last words of David is the number of the sons
of Levi from twenty years old and upward,
28 for he appointed them under the hand of Aaron to
minister in the house of the Lord, over the courts and over the chambers, and
over the purification of all the holy things, and over the works of the service
of the house of God,
29 for the bread of the presentation, for the fine flour of
the sacrifice, and for the unleavened wafers, and for the frying pan, and for
the mixed dough, and for every measure,
30 and to stand in the morning to praise and give thanks to
the Lord, and likewise in the evening,
31 and over all the whole burnt offerings offered up to the
Lord on the sabbaths, and at the new moons, and at the feasts, by number,
according to the ordinance concerning them, continually before the Lord.
32 And they shall keep the charge of the tabernacle of
witness, and the charge of the sons of Aaron their brothers, to minister in the
house of the Lord.
Chapter 24
1 And these were the divisions of the sons of Aaron: the
sons of Aaron were Nadab and Abiud, Eleazar and Ithamar.
2 And Nadab and Abiud died before their father, and they
had no sons; and Eleazar and Ithamar, the sons of Aaron, served as priests.
3 And David divided them, Sadok from the sons of Eleazar,
and Achimelech from the sons of Ithamar, according to their numbering,
according to their service, according to the houses of their fathers.
4 And the sons of Eleazar were found to be more numerous as
chiefs of the mighty than the sons of Ithamar, and he divided them: for the
sons of Eleazar, chiefs according to the houses of their fathers, sixteen; and
for the sons of Ithamar, according to the houses of their fathers, eight.
5 And he divided them by lots, these alongside those, for
there were rulers of the holy things and rulers of the Lord among the sons of
Eleazar and among the sons of Ithamar.
6 And Samaias son of Nathanael, the scribe from Levi, wrote
them down before the king and the rulers, and Sadok the priest and Achimelech
son of Abiathar and the chiefs of the fathers' houses of the priests and of the
Levites, one father's house at a time for Eleazar and one at a time for
Ithamar.
7 And the first lot came out to Iarib, the second to Ideia,
8 the third to Charem, the fourth to Seorim,
9 the fifth to Melchia, the sixth to Miamin,
10 the seventh to Kos, the eighth to Abia,
11 the ninth to Jesus, the tenth to Sechenia,
12 the eleventh to Eliasib, the twelfth to Iakim,
13 the thirteenth to Occhoppha, the fourteenth to Isbaal,
14 the fifteenth to Belga, the sixteenth to Emmer,
15 the seventeenth to Chezir, the eighteenth to Aphesse,
16 the nineteenth to Phetaia, the twentieth to Ezekel,
17 the twenty-first to Iachin, the twenty-second to Gamul,
18 the twenty-third to Dalaia, the twenty-fourth to Maasai.
19 This is their numbering according to their service, to
enter into the house of the Lord according to their ordinance, by the hand of
Aaron their father, as the Lord God of Israel commanded.
20 And for the remaining sons of Levi: for the sons of
Ambram, Subael; for the sons of Subael, Iadia.
21 For Raabia, the chief was Iesias.
22 And for Issari, Salomoth; for the sons of Salomoth,
Iath.
23 The sons of Iediu: Amadia the second, Iaziel the third,
Iokom the fourth.
24 The sons of Oziel: Micha; the sons of Micha: Samer.
25 The brother of Micha was Isia; the sons of Isia:
Zacharia.
26 The sons of Merari: Mooli and Musi; the sons of Ozia,
the sons of Bonni.
27 The sons of Merari belonging to Ozia: his sons were
Isoam and Zacchur and Abdi.
28 To Mooli: Eleazar and Ithamar; and Eleazar died, and he
had no sons.
29 To Kis: the sons of Kis: Iramael.
30 And the sons of Musi: Mooli and Eder and Iarimoth. These
were the sons of the Levites according to the houses of their fathers.
31 And they too cast lots, just as their brothers the sons
of Aaron did, before the king and Sadok and Achimelech and the chiefs of the
fathers' houses of the priests and of the Levites, the heads of families of
Araab just as his younger brothers.
Chapter 25
1 And David the king and the chiefs of the host appointed
for the services the sons of Asaph and Haiman and Idithon, who uttered praise with
lyres and with harps and with cymbals. And their number, according to their
heads, of those working in their services, was:
2 The sons of Asaph: Zacchur and Joseph and Nathanias and
Erael, sons of Asaph, attached to Asaph the prophet, attached to the king.
3 To Idithon, the sons of Idithon: Godolias and Suri and
Isaia and Semei and Asabia and Mattathias, six, under their father Idithon,
striking up with the lyre thanksgiving and praise to the Lord.
4 To Haiman, the sons of Haiman: Bukias and Manthanias and
Azarael and Subael and Jerimoth and Ananias and Anani and Eliatha and
Godollathi and Romemthi-od and Jesbakasa and Mallethi and Otheri and Meazoth.
5 All these were sons to Haiman, who struck up music for
the king in the words of God, to exalt the horn; and God gave to Haiman
fourteen sons and three daughters.
6 All these, with their father, sang hymns in the house of
the Lord with cymbals and with harps and with lyres, at the side of the king,
and Asaph and Idithon and Haiman.
7 And their number, together with their brethren,
instructed to sing to the Lord, everyone that was skilled, was two hundred and
eighty-eight.
8 And they too cast lots for the daily courses, for the
small as for the great, for the accomplished and for those learning.
9 And the first lot came out, of his sons and of his
brethren, to Asaph, to Joseph, Godolias; the second, Henia, his brethren and
his sons, twelve;
10 the third, Zacchur, his sons and his brethren, twelve;
11 the fourth, Jesdri, his sons and his brethren, twelve;
12 the fifth, Nathanias, his sons and his brethren, twelve;
13 the sixth, Bukias, his sons and his brethren, twelve;
14 the seventh, Iseriel, his sons and his brethren, twelve;
15 the eighth, Josia, his sons and his brethren, twelve;
16 the ninth, Manthanias, his sons and his brethren,
twelve;
17 the tenth, Semei, his sons and his brethren, twelve;

Chapter 26
1 Concerning the divisions of the gatekeepers: to the sons
of the Korahites, Mosollamia son of Kore, of the sons of Abiasaph.
2 And Mosollamia had sons: Zacharias the firstborn, Idiel
the second, Zabadias the third, Iethnouel the fourth,
3 Olam the fifth, Ioanan the sixth, Elioenai the seventh.
4 And Abdedom had sons: Samaias the firstborn, Iozabad the
second, Ioaa the third, Sochar the fourth, Nathanael the fifth,
5 Amiel the sixth, Issachar the seventh, Phollathi the
eighth, for God had blessed him.
6 And to Samaias his son were born sons of his firstborn
Rosai, in his paternal house, for they were mighty men.
7 The sons of Samaias: Gothni and Raphael and Obed and
Elzabad and Achiou, mighty sons, Eliou and Sabchia and Isbakom.
8 All these were of the sons of Abdedom, they and their
brothers and their sons, working mightily in the service, sixty-two in all
belonging to Abdedom.
9 And Mosollamia had sons and brothers, eighteen mighty
men.
10 And Osa, of the sons of Merari, had sons guarding the
leadership, for there was no firstborn, and his father made him ruler
11 of the second division; Tablai the third, Zacharias the
fourth: all these, sons and brothers of Osa, were thirteen.
12 To these belonged the divisions of the gates, to the
chiefs of the mighty men, courses like their brothers, to minister in the house
of the Lord.
13 And they cast lots, small and great alike, according to
their fathers' houses, for gate after gate.
14 And the lot for the east fell to Salamia and Zacharias;
the sons of Ioas cast lots for Melchia, and his lot came out for the north;
15 to Abdedom the south, opposite the house of Esephin,
16 for a second post; to Osa toward the west, after the
gate of the chamber of the ascent: watch corresponding to watch.
17 Toward the east, six for the day; for the north, four a
day; for the south, four a day; and at the Esephin, two;
18 as relievers, and toward the west, four; and at the
path, two relieving.
19 These are the divisions of the gatekeepers, for the sons
of Kore and the sons of Merari.
20 And the Levites their brothers were over the treasuries
of the house of the Lord and over the treasuries of the hallowed things.
21 The sons of Ladan, sons belonging to Gerson through
Ladan, heads of families belonging to Ladan the Gersonite: Iiel.
22 And the sons of Iiel: Zethom and Ioel, the brothers over
the treasuries of the house of the Lord.
23 Of Ambram and Issaar, Chebron and Oziel:
24 and Soubael the son of Gersam son of Moses was chief
over the treasuries.
25 And of his brother Eliezer: Raabias his son, and Iosaias
and Ioram and Zechri and Salomoth.
26 This Salomoth and his brothers were over all the
treasuries of the holy things, which David the king had consecrated, and the
heads of the families, commanders of thousands and of hundreds and captains of
the host,
27 things which he took from the wars and from the spoils,
and consecrated from them so that the building of the house of God would not be
delayed;
28 and over all the holy things of Samuel the prophet, and
Saul son of Kis, and Abenner son of Ner, and Ioab son of Sarouia: everything
which they consecrated was under the hand of Salomoth and his brothers.
29 Of the Issarites: Chonenia and his sons were for the
outside work over Israel, to act as scribes and to judge.
30 Of the Chebronites: Asabias and his brothers, mighty
sons, one thousand seven hundred, were over the oversight of Israel beyond the
Jordan westward, for all the service of the Lord and the work of the king.
31 Of the Chebronites: Ioudias was the chief of the
Chebronites according to their generations, by families; in the fortieth year
of his reign they were reviewed, and there was found a mighty man among them at
Iazer of Galaad,
32 and his brothers, mighty sons, two thousand seven
hundred heads of families; and David the king set them over the Reubenites and
the Gaddites and the half-tribe of Manasse, for every ordinance of the Lord and
word of the king.
Chapter 27
1 And the sons of Israel according to their number, heads
of the fathers' houses, commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds, and
the scribes who ministered to the people and in every matter of the king
according to divisions, in every matter of that which came in and went out,
month by month for all the months of the year—one division was twenty-four
thousand.
2 And over the first division for the first month was
Iesboam the son of Zabdiel, and in his division were twenty-four thousand;
3 of the sons of Phares, chief of all the chiefs of the
host for the first month.
4 And over the division of the second month was Dodia the
Echochite, and in his division were twenty-four thousand, chiefs of the host.
5 The third, for the third month, was Banaias the son of
Iodae the priest, the chief, and in his division were twenty-four thousand.
6 This Banaias was mightier than the thirty and over the
thirty, and over his division was Amizabath his son.
7 The fourth, for the fourth month, was Asael the brother
of Ioab, and Zabdias his son and his brothers, and in his division were
twenty-four thousand.
8 The fifth, for the fifth month, was the leader Samaoth
the Iesraite, and in his division were twenty-four thousand.
9 The sixth, for the sixth month, was Odouias the son of
Ekkes the Thekoite, and in his division were twenty-four thousand.
10 The seventh, for the seventh month, was Chelles of
Phallous, of the sons of Ephraim, and in his division were twenty-four
thousand.
11 The eighth, for the eighth month, was Sobochai the
Isathite, of Zarai, and in his division were twenty-four thousand.
12 The ninth, for the ninth month, was Abiezer of Anathoth,
of the land of Benjamin, and in his division were twenty-four thousand.
13 The tenth, for the tenth month, was Meera of Netouphat,
of Zarai, and in his division were twenty-four thousand.
14 The eleventh, for the eleventh month, was Banaias of
Pharathon, of the sons of Ephraim, and in his division were twenty-four
thousand.
15 The twelfth, for the twelfth month, was Choldai the
Netophathite, of Gothoniel, and in his division were twenty-four thousand.
16 And over the tribes of Israel: for Reuben the leader was
Eliezer the son of Zechri; for Symeon, Saphatias the son of Maacha;
17 for Levi, Asabias the son of Kamouel; for Aaron, Sadok;
18 for Judah, Eliab of the brothers of David; for Issachar,
Ambri the son of Michael;
19 for Zabulon, Samaias the son of Abdiou; for Nephthali,
Ierimoth the son of Esriel;
20 for Ephraim, Ose the son of Ozias; for the half-tribe of
Manasseh, Ioel the son of Phadaia;
21 for the half-tribe of Manasseh in Galaad, Iaddai the son
of Zabdios; for the sons of Benjamin, Asiel the son of Abenner;
22 for Dan, Azarael the son of Ioram. These were the heads
of the fathers' houses of the tribes of Israel.
23 And David did not take the number of them from twenty
years old and under, because the Lord had said he would multiply Israel like
the stars of heaven.
24 And Ioab the son of Sarouia began to number among the
people, and did not finish; and there came wrath upon Israel because of this,
and the number was not recorded in the book of the chronicles of King David.
25 And over the treasuries of the king was Asmoth the son
of Odiel; and over the treasuries in the field and in the villages and in the
settlements and in the towers was Ionathan the son of Ozias.
26 And over those who tilled the ground, the laborers, was
Esdri the son of Choloub;
27 and over the fields was Semei of Rama; and over the
treasuries of wine in the fields was Zachri the son of Sephni;
28 and over the olive groves and the sycamore trees in the
lowland was Balanas the Gedorite, and over the treasuries of oil was Ioas.
29 And over the cattle grazing in Asidon was Satrais the
Saronite, and over the cattle in the valleys was Sophat the son of Adli;
30 and over the camels was Obil the Ishmaelite, and over
the asses was Iadias of Merathon;
31 and over the sheep was Iaziz the Hagarite. All these
were overseers of the possessions of King David.
32 And Ionathan, David's uncle, was a counselor, an
intelligent man and himself a scribe; and Iiel the son of Achamani was with the
sons of the king;
33 and Achitophel was counselor to the king, and Chousi was
the first friend of the king;
34 and after this Achitophel came Iodae the son of Banaias,
and Abiathar; and Ioab was the commander-in-chief of the king.
Chapter 28
1 And David assembled all the leaders of Israel, the
leaders of the judges and the leaders of the divisions that attended on the
person of the king, and the leaders of thousands and of hundreds, and the
treasurers, and those over his possessions, and the mighty men and the warriors
of the army, at Jerusalem.
2 And David stood in the midst of the assembly and said,
"Hear me, my brothers and my people. It came into my heart to build a
house of rest for the ark of the covenant of the Lord and a place for the feet
of our Lord, and I prepared the things suitable for its dwelling.
3 But God said, 'You shall not build me a house to call my
name upon it, for you are a man of war and have shed blood.'
4 And the Lord God of Israel chose me out of all my
father's house to be king over Israel forever; and in Judah he chose the
kingship, and out of the house of Judah the house of my father, and among the
sons of my father he was pleased with me, that I should become king over all
Israel.
5 And out of all my sons he chose Solomon my son to sit
upon the throne of the kingdom of the Lord over Israel.
6 And God said to me, 'Solomon your son shall build my
house and my court, for I have chosen him to be my son, and I will be to him a
father,
7 and I will establish his kingdom forever, if he is strong
to keep my commandments and my judgments as at this day.'
8 And now, before the face of all the assembly of the Lord
and in the ears of our God, keep and seek all the commandments of the Lord our
God, that you may inherit the good land and leave it as an inheritance to your
sons after you forever.
9 And now, Solomon my son, know the God of your fathers and
serve him with a whole heart and a willing soul, for the Lord searches all
hearts and knows every thought. If you seek him, he will be found by you; and
if you forsake him, he will forsake you utterly.
10 See now, that the Lord has chosen you to build him a
house for a sanctuary. Be strong and act."
11 And David gave to Solomon his son the plan of the temple
and of its houses and its treasuries and the upper chambers and the inner storehouses
and the house of atonement,
12 and the plan which he had in his spirit of the courts of
the house of the Lord and of all the chambers round about that were for the
storehouses of the house of the Lord and the storehouses of the holy things,
13 and of the lodgings of the divisions of the priests and
the Levites for all the work of the service of the house of the Lord, and of
the storehouses of the serviceable vessels of the worship of the house of the
Lord.
14 And the weight of their measure, both of the gold and
silver ones:
15 the weight of the lampstands he gave him, and of the
lamps;
16 likewise he gave him the weight of the tables of the
presentation, of each golden table and likewise of the silver ones,
17 and of the flesh-hooks and libation-vessels and the
golden bowls, and the weight of the gold and silver ones, of each kephphoure by
weight.
18 And he showed him the weight of the altar of incense, of
refined gold, and the plan of the chariot of the cherubim with wings spread out
and overshadowing the ark of the covenant of the Lord.
19 All these David gave to Solomon in writing by the hand
of the Lord, according to the understanding that came upon him of the working
out of the plan.
20 And David said to Solomon his son, "Be strong and
courageous and act; do not fear nor be dismayed, for the Lord my God is with
you; he will not fail you nor forsake you until you have completed all the work
of the service of the house of the Lord.
21 And behold, the divisions of the priests and the Levites
are for all the service of the house of God, and with you in every task is
everyone willing with wisdom in every craft, and the leaders and all the people
for all your commands."
Chapter 29
1 And David the king said to all the assembly,
"Solomon my son, the one whom the Lord has chosen for himself, is young
and tender, and the work is great, for the building is not for man, but for the
Lord God.
2 According to all my power I have prepared for the house
of my God gold, silver, bronze, iron, wood, stones of soom and for setting, and
precious and variegated stones, and every costly stone, and much Parian marble.
3 And moreover, in my delight in the house of my God, I
have gold and silver which I have acquired for myself, and behold, I have given
it for the house of my God, over and above what I have prepared for the house
of the holy things:
4 three thousand talents of gold from Souphir, and seven
thousand talents of refined silver, for the walls of the temple to be overlaid
with them
5 by the hand of craftsmen. And who is willing to fill his
hands today for the Lord?"
6 And the chiefs of the families were willing, and the
rulers of the sons of Israel, and the commanders of thousands and the
commanders of hundreds, and the overseers of the works, and the stewards of the
king,
7 and they gave for the works of the house of the Lord five
thousand talents of gold and ten thousand gold pieces, and ten thousand talents
of silver, and eighteen thousand talents of bronze, and one hundred thousand
talents of iron.
8 And those with whom stone was found gave it to the

9 And the people rejoiced because of their willingness, for
with a full heart they showed willingness to the Lord, and David the king rejoiced
greatly.
10 And King David blessed the Lord before the assembly,
saying, "Blessed are you, O Lord, God of Israel, our father, from
everlasting to everlasting.
11 Yours, O Lord, is the greatness and the power and the
glory and the victory and the might, for you are master of all things in heaven
and on earth; before your face every king and nation is troubled.
12 From you come riches and glory; you rule over all, O
Lord, ruler of all dominion, and in your hand are might and power, and in your
hand, Almighty, it is to magnify and to strengthen all things.
13 And now, O Lord, we give thanks to you and praise the
name of your glory.
14 And who am I, and who is my people, that we have been
able to show such willingness to you? For all things are yours, and of your own
we have given to you.
15 For we are sojourners before you, and dwelling as
strangers, as were all our fathers; our days upon the earth are as a shadow,
and there is no abiding.
16 O Lord our God, all this abundance which I have prepared
for a house to be built for your holy name is from your hand, and all things
are yours.
17 And I know, O Lord, that you are the one who tries
hearts and loves righteousness; in simplicity of heart I have willingly offered
all these things, and now I have seen your people who are found here offering
willingly to you with joy.
18 O Lord, God of Abraham and Isaac and Israel, our
fathers, keep these things in the intent of the heart of your people forever,
and direct their hearts toward you.
19 And to Solomon my son give a good heart, to do your
commandments and your testimonies and your ordinances, and to bring to
completion the building of your house."
20 And David said to all the assembly, "Bless the Lord
your God." And all the assembly blessed the Lord, the God of their
fathers, and bending their knees they did obeisance to the Lord and to the
king.
21 And David sacrificed sacrifices to the Lord and offered
up whole burnt offerings to God on the morrow of the first day: a thousand
calves, a thousand rams, a thousand lambs, and their drink offerings, and
sacrifices in abundance for all Israel.
22 And they ate and drank before the Lord on that day with
joy, and they made Solomon son of David king a second time, and anointed him to
the Lord as king, and Zadok to the priesthood.
23 And Solomon sat upon the throne of David his father and
was well received, and all Israel obeyed him;
24 the rulers and the mighty men and all the sons of King
David his father submitted to him.
25 And the Lord magnified Solomon exceedingly before all
Israel, and gave him royal glory such as had not come upon any king before him.
26 And David son of Jesse reigned over Israel
27 forty years: in Hebron seven years, and in Jerusalem
thirty-three years.
28 And he died in a good old age, full of days, in riches
and glory, and Solomon his son reigned in his stead.
29 And the rest of the acts of King David, the former and
the latter, are written in the words of Samuel the seer, and in the words of
Nathan the prophet, and in the words of Gad the seer,
30 concerning all his reign and his power, and the times
that came upon him and upon Israel and upon all the kingdoms of the
earth.
